Need to buy a digital camera for work?
anyone like to make a recommendation? anyone bought one recently that they really liked/disliked?
needs to be able to take decent pics, plenty of 'em and be generally a handy piece of kit.
I'd say the budget is E500 - E1000. though if your suggestion costs more suggest away and I'll go cap in hand.... :)
thanks in advance.

I recently bought a Canon A95 which I find to be very good. Do a google search on it. The reviews are pretty favourable.

If you are going to spend that kind of money, don't waste it on a digital. Get a dSLR like the Canon 300d or 350d.

Why not?
I've had a sony for the last three years and never had a problem with it. The movie function is great too, with sound .. never have felt the urge to get a camcorder.

He said it was for work so it would be foolish to recommend a Digital SLR. They require care and understanding.
The Canon EOS digital SLR's don't allow a scene to be viewed in the LCD before the picture is taken. In order to get the most from them you need to understand a bit about photography. That may not suit everyone in his office.
By the way, I have an EOS 300D and I think it's the dogs under carriage!
Truely is a wonderful camera.

thanks for the help here folks.
Just to clarify -I'm not a wedding photographer, working for a newspaper, forensic scientist or anything remotely glamorous...
for the most part the camera will be on a tripod and I'll be going -click "next" -click- "next" -click -"next" ad nauseum for a couple of hours at a time.
This means that while the shots don't have to win me any photographers guild blue ribbands -they have to be clear, good quality for print media, archiving etc etc...
that probably means I need a half decent realtime LCD/VDU.
Was thinking of a Canon - but have heard a couple of complaints from a colleague.
Sony -I'd be wary of due to previous experience with other digital media (MP3 players, MD players) where the software was abyssmally non-user friendly and W95 like. Yet I'm intrigued by mcdermessers suggestion about the movie function on his.
Just from my quick googling it appears that for my bare spec I don't need to spend a grand for something that'll do the job anyway.

Yes, if you're photographing Liam Kearney and his "go faster" stripes. ;)
You can't beat an SLR for action sports though.

No! Education is only outlawed in Dublin.
It's compulsory everywhere else. :p :D
