Wout Weghorts' goal in the 10th minute was the deciding factor in the contest that sealed the Netherlands qualification for the tournament next summer. The first shot on target came from Ireland as Callum Robinson headed a clever ball down to Alan Browne who struck an effort with the outside of his boot that Verbruggen caught with ease.
Simons had the first sight on goal for the Netherlands but under pressure from Scales, he hit his shot wide. The Netherlands opened to the scoring after ten minutes when Wort Weghorst broke free of the attentions of Nathan Collins and struck a high effort to the roof of the net beating Bazunu at his near post.
Gavin Bazunu was alert to the danger in the next Dutch attack as Weghorst and Simons combined to set the ball through to Gapko with the Irish keeper showing bravery to dive at his feet to retrieve the ball. Liam Scales did excellently to put the ball behind from a corner as Dumfries was awaiting to convert Danny Blind’s cross.
Ireland had to continue to defend with Liam Scales and Nathan Collins blocking down two attacking chances from both Gakpo and Simons. Reijnders forced an excellent save as his left-footed shot from the wing saw Bazunu tipping the ball over the bar.
Gavin Bazunu was forced to make another great save early in the second half following a quick Dutch attack that started and ended with Simons that saw the Irish keeper getting down low to deny a certain goal. Moments later, Bazunu was to make a brace of fine stops to deny both Weghorst and Reijnders with two diving saves.
Adam Idah was to have the ball in the net for Ireland after he broke free of the attentions of Van Dijk but he strayed offside on his initial run and despite beating Verbruggen the flag was raised.
Gakpo had another sight on goal but Jamie McGrath forced a corner with an excellent block. Bazunu had to collect a second ball as Reijnders almost added a second for the home side with Collins stopping his initial effort.
Ryan Manning's attempt on the edge of the area was blocked by Van Dijk following Mikey Johnston earning a free kick outside the Holland area.
In the subsequent attacking phase, Gavin Bazunu had to make another save to keep Malen at his near post.
