Up until this point, the first staging of this competition was believed to be in 1975. However, following extensive research and a verification process, the FAI can confirm that the competition was first played in 1972 and the Finals of 1972, 1973 and 1974 are now officially acknowledged.

For a number of reasons, the early years of women’s football in Ireland were not properly chronicled and that allowed for key information to be mislaid. Now, the FAI are happy to rectify this and honour those who took part in those early years of the competition.
Players and officials from the first three Cup Finals have been invited to Sunday's game between Athlone Town and Shelbourne in Tallaght Stadium, with over 100 people from these teams are expected to attend.
