The afternoon kick off at*Concordia Piotrków Trybunalski in Poland saw James Scott's team start well with captain Katie Lawlee unloading a shot on target within the opening 60 seconds.
It felt like that was an indicator of how the game was to unfold as Ireland played positive, attacking football that perhaps should have led to more clear-cut opportunities in front of goal.
Norway, though, showed that they were equal to the Girls in Green and displayed their attacking quality through a number of moves but it was Ireland who finished the first period on top.
Cork City defender Kiera Sena burst forward and got to shoot an effort that forced goalkeeper Sanna Elisabeth Kvia into a fine save just before the interval.
By that stage, Ireland had already made one change with Emma Duffy replacing the injured Lillie Quinlivan Coulson. That forced a reshuffle with Katie O'Reilly then coming on for Hannah O'Brien at the restart of the game.
Ireland kept the pressure on with Rebecca Devereux, Lucy O'Rourke, Sena and substitute Eve O'Carroll all registering efforts on goal. But it was Enya Carthy who was the busier of the two goalkeepers as she pulled off three superb stops.
Still, Ireland continued to push forward as the clock ticked into added time. Both sides gave as good as they got from each other until Hedda Krogstad Lium got the decisive goal to win it for Norway.
This result will sting for Ireland but they will take a lot from the performance and should go into Sunday's meeting with Iceland with the confidence that they can progress in this group.
