It must be remembered the reason we are now in this position is because of Israel's withdraw all results against bottom sides were discarded as result. It meant we were relegated to pot 4 from pot 3 and Croatia were relegated prom pot 2 to pot 3...

Granted you know even if this wasnt the case we'd just get Belgium from pot 4 instead of Croatia/Germany.

Easy now the Israelis embassy will be complining

Pity about the **** draw as from next year it's gonna be way tougher to qualify as UEFA reduced the finals tournament to 8 teams again.

I still don’t know why the are decreasing it to 8…really makes it down to luck of the draw more than anything as in alot of cases there isn’t much between a lot of the sides.

Looking at this group one thing we need to remember is while Croatia are of course a great footballing nation they actually aren’t that great at u17s/u19 level, last year was the first u17s they qualified for since 2015!, so you’d possibly have Ireland ahead of Croatia when it comes to CO-efficient at this level. So it’s comes down to can we pop one of Germany or Portugal are qualify as they are both just as good at u17 level as they are at senior level!

For context the ranking and co-efficient in Europe is

Germany 6th & 19,500
Portugal 7th & 18,500
Ireland 9th & 16,333
Croatia 27th & 8,667

A 3 all draw in the Germany Croatia game

Murray and umeh should be a good wide threath off the bench if trying to push for the win late on

1-0 down. Keeper error. It was his second & possibly third error inside the opening fifteen minutes.

thought it was the pass from Roche that put the keeper under pressure, although he controlled it badly.
It's all Portugal so far, apart from a close range chance for Melia

2-0 now. Defending not great.

2-1 now. Penalty with Melia taken down. Maybe a little fortunate as it looked to possibly be outside the box. Well taken penalty though sending the keeper the wrong way.

Great chance to equalise

Yeah should be level great missed opportunity. Unfortunate error from keeper. The 5 at the back isn't really suiting us as we have no pace on the break. Melia really looks the real deal. The move between mcandrew and melia to win the peno was class

Yeah should be level great missed opportunity

Could have been, yes, but in no way could you argue we should have been or deserved to be.

4-1 now and that reflects what I've seen today far more accurately. Tough last 30 ahead of these lads now

I feel at underage level when we come up against the big nations we tend to show them far too much respect and it shows in the way we play.

Obviously was always going to be a tough task to get anything out of the game even if we played out of our skin but we looked like a side that has thrown in the towel before a ball was even kicked.

Finished 2-0 to Germany in the end. Just the one game against Croatia left who are a point ahead of us and play Portugal later today.

For next season the Euros will be returning to a 8 team tournament.

Missed a great one on one chance ti equalise before Germany got the second which was a horrible deflection from a nothing shot. A fairly even game. Defensively we have been poor ,

I just hope next campaign we get a more challenging group. This group was far too easy, so much so they got too far ahead of themselves and forgot about the basics of defence....

A good lesson for this team about taking you're chances at this level and defending.

Croatia 2-0 up despite only having 2 real goalscoring opportunities throughout.

I would have real question marks about Colin O'Brien at this stage, I understand its a difficult group but the way we've approached the 3 games has been desperate. We almost have the look of a side who knew we were going to lose before a ball is kicked.

Think it's definitely about time we consider changing up some coaches at underage. O'Brien and Mohan have been overseeing the U17s and U19s nearly 8 years now.

Definitely on the back of these 3 games

Ireland losing 4-0 which judging on this match is absolutely disgraceful, they've just given up and when a team get's to that stage that should be the sign that its time for change. If you were Germany in the other game you'd be ****ed with Ireland with their attitude in this match.

Now 5-0, an absolute disgrace. I dont want to go in on the players as they are just kids but the coaches really have to hang their heads in shame after this performance never mind the other 2. You could have a degree of sympathy in the other games but today was just a case of Ireland completely jacking it in the minute Croatia took the lead.

Played three, lost three, conceded 11, scored one. When you also include the three games we played back in November we've failed to score in four of the six qualifiers this season. Two 0-0 draws against Iceland and Switzerland and we beat Armenia 4-0 in the first game.

I think that paints a picture of the way the team has been set up this campaign, just safe. It was quite noticeable in the preliminary rounds that we were very plodding in our play and reliant on Umeh,Orazi,Melia etc to create something. I'm sort of glad they've been so embarrassingly exposed this round.

Less than a year later and three of the players from the squad in the qualifying stage - Finneran, Moloney, and McDonnell - have gone on to play senior football outside of Ireland. That must be a first for an U17 squad?

Not only that, but they're all midfielders. Thank God!

Well (if they have the requisite talent and the right attitude) then cap them early and often.

We have to be much more proactive now with dual nationals.

Don't think we'll have much to worry about. Think we're Grady's first choice because he'd get a senior cap with Canada before he would with us and with them you've actually got a chance of playing in a WC.

Don't think he'd be travelling the distance his does to join up with us if we weren't his first choice for a senior cap.

Moloney is 17 and after his debut he featured in three of the next six games. Since then he's only played twice in the next 13 games. So while we might not be his first choice for a senior cap he'll likely need to transform into a superstar in the next couple of years for Spain to have an interest.

My issue with them being duals is the fact that they're not Irish born duals. They were lads that were developed outside of Ireland. Thankfully though the group before this lot had Akachukwu, Matthew Moore, and Daniel McGrath.
