Done well in his time at CP but now is the right time for him to move on

I reckon he'll be missed at Celtic, who's going to play the target man role now? Magic? Miller? Beattie? One of my fondest memories of the big man is his goal against Liverpool for the Bhoys, and putting it right up Dunphy who had written him off in the build up!!

Jimmy Floyyd Hasselbaink it appears...maybe

I liked the big guy, scored 100+ goals for celtic, including the Anfield one, the important away goal at Celta Vigo which set us on the road to the Uefa Cup final in 2003 + the goal which got us our first away point in the CL at the Nou Camp (though it was offside!!) plus numerous others that you need to secure 3 SPL titles.

Best of luck to him at WBA. I hope we don't sign Jimmy FH, 34 years of age, not sure I like his attitude anbd think he flatters to deceive.

We now have Riordan, Miller, Zurawski, Maloney, Beattie - all fairly lightweight, his priorities have to be in defence - will he even go for another striker??

I think he needs a Gary Doherty!

with Ireland you have to support him, that doesn't mean I want him anywhere near my club side!!!!!!!!!!

Come on Junior, be fair; Doherty's welcome at CP like anyone else if he stumps up the cash for a ticket... ;) :D

According to the Daily Record, Stilian Petrov may be offered to Man City in exchange for Barton. Take it with a pinch of salt though.
Barton is up for sale, but I'd heard Boro were going to take him.

categorically denied by Celtic (well that they have contacted MCFC at least)

“We wish Stilian Petrov to remain at the club and this story is totally inaccurate.

“We have had no call at Celtic Park from any newspaper to check the validity of this story.”

Well, it was from that bastion of journalistic integrity, the Daily Record!

Hopefully petrov won't attract a decent team and stays on. I would hope that he would only be looking at portsmouth as a stepping stone anyway.

He's already at a decent team FFS!

AFAICS his new agent has been instrumental in unsettling him. If Celtic let him go I hope it's not for a penny less than £7m. Having seen what some Premiership clubs will pay for frankly average players (Andy "Divebomber" Johnson for £8.5m? Puh-leese  ) I hope that in this case the club sticks to its position.

Hi paddy , i agree he's at a decent team !!
trouble is this agent unsettling him
if he has made up his mind to go then i would like to see him do well like henrik rather than do a burchill or a miller.
An excellent season at pompey might get him into liverpool or united
A few excellent seasons at CP have been ignored by the big EPL clubs

Thank God for that. Celtic's 1st clean sheet of the pre-season against arguably the best team they played. A Mexican team which contains 6 of Mexico's WC squad. Still no goals though. A few players still needed.

Don't want to put a dampner on a glimmer of light in these desperate times, but the draw could have been achieved by the skin of their teeth.
From the sparse report on the BBC site.
"But it took some heroics from keeper David Marshall to earn Celtic the draw."

Was at the game. Other than Ireland-Egypt from US 94, it was the worst game of football I've ever seen. I wouldn't take too much heart from the clean sheet; both teams had so much trouble controlling the ball on the astroturf that there was hardly a decent move put together by either side. Everything was stuck in the middle third of the field. Two decent saves by Marshall, otherwise hardly a shot on goal.

I have still not watched 1 pre-season game when every game is available live on C67. I'd usually watch the repeat but I wouldn't put myself through 90 minutes of the crap Celtic have been putting on so far. Hopefully I'll catch the next one and it's a decent match.

Which is why I'm dreading the season - well, not dreading exactly, just kinda thinking that I'd like the summer to continue a wee bit past 29 July...

Hopefully I'll catch the next one and it's a decent match.

I see Celtic have been plonked into the 2nd seedings for the CL draw. I'd assume that they would have been 3rd seeds only for that Juve and Milan are excluded from the competition

No, Celtic were "plonked" in the second pot in any case. These two reports are from May, immediately after last season's CL final.

I am not sure PP that 2 newspaper articles from long ago confirm anything.
As Celtic came in at 15th place in the co-oefficients for this CL draw
http://www.uefa.com/competitions/UCL/news/Kind=1/newsId=429304.html, where would you have put Juve and Milan?

RogerMilla
18/07/2006, 8:40 AM
geysir , you havent looked into this at all , every celtic fan knows celtic went into pot 2 after the CL final , the reason they are 15th now is bacause juve and milan are out and inter is in instead with a higher co-efficient just pushing celtic up one place from 16th to 15th .

geysir
18/07/2006, 8:51 AM
That explains it very nicely, thanks. I wasn't calculating for Inter's belated entry.

I finally got to see a Celtic pre-season game last night and I came away a lot happier than before the match. The first half wasn't great for Celtic but they dominated the 2nd half.

It was my first time seeing a few of these players play a full game in a Celtic shirt. Jarosik looks a really good player and should stick out in the SPL. Miller looked better on the ball than I thought but his decision making, finishing, etc. could improve. Probably needs a goal. Sno came on in the 2nd half for Lennon and was the main reason Celtic played so much better. He misplaced 1 pass and got himself about. I don't think he's ready for the first team yet but looks promising. He started the move for the goal with a run on the break.

Petrov has to leave, he's just not playing well at all and looks depressed. McGeady was excellent, Marshall was excellent, Wilson as usual.

This team is still only half the team that'll be playing next season. Celtic are 50% the team without Nakamura. He's the key and I look forward to seeing him back in the team. Maloney too will set up about a billion chances. A left back and striker are certain to come in. Hopefully a centre half and/or central midfielder are brought in too.

Maloney has less then 12 months left on his contract need to get him signed up ASAP

There were some reports about Celtic making a bid for the Ukranian MF Tymoshchuk, looks like Feyenoord €7m have easily outbid Celtic €4.5.
http://shakhtar.com/cgi-bin/fc-sh/allnews.pl?lang=en&id=2641&select_month=&select_year=
I suppose its not as bad as being outbid by Sunderland.

About Marshall, after looking at bits from both of them in a few preseason games, as good as Boruc is but also considering his blunders, is Marshall at all in the reckoning for first choice?

RogerMilla
29/07/2006, 4:24 PM
i don't see him displacing boruc ever , geysir , from what i gather celtic are trying to get an experienced keeper as cover and will loan marshall out for the season, possibly to a championship team in england

Gravensen would be the IDEAL man for Celtic and a much better acquisition than that waste of time, Keane (I predicted he wouldn't be here at end of season, all he did was upset the balance). Would be delighted if Strachan could pull this one out of the bag.

I've had my doubts about Sno before yesterday's game but he was excellent last night. I really think he can go on to become some player. I wouldn't trust him as the deepest midfielder just yet but as a supporting midfielder he's good enough for the 1st team already.

Junior
10/08/2006, 1:30 PM
We did ok, in terms of containing Chelsea, but we didn't actually create much, which is a concerning trend following on from Sundays performance.

Sno has had mixed performances so far, looked decent enough last night, a strong player, I need to see much more from him before I would start sticking him in the first 11. Suppose it depends on when Petrov goes though, and we have no other choice!!

RogerMilla
10/08/2006, 1:59 PM
what i like about sno is that he is always looking for the ball and he has the skill to do something with it . only trouble is he wastes it occasionally and the fans are liable to get on a fellas back when he does that, looks a massive prospect

drinkfeckarse
10/08/2006, 2:34 PM
looks a massive prospect

I remember when Petrov first came he arrived as a massive prospect but looked out of place for the first season. If Sno turns out to be anything like Stan then I'm sure everyone will be delighted but he has to be given time. I hate to hear fans getting on someone's back especially if they're young.

You can't really expect to create much at Stamford Bridge but they did create quite a few clear cut chances. Miller had a great chance to score from a Pearson ball. Pearson had header saved superbly and also another great chance to score when free in the box but was saved. Riordan had a goal disallowed for offside. That's 4 clear cut chances off the top of my head and then the odd shot wide. Pleasing performance but there's still a few players obviously needed.

RogerMilla

linked with loads of players , would be nice to pull a big name or hell even two out of the bag , can see retention of the SPL even without petrov but it's vital not to let the side down in the CL , especially preserving what is a pretty excellent home record...

Dunfermline 1-1 Rangers today. Saw bits and pieces of it, Ranges had plenty of the ball but did'nt create enough That said they got themselves in front and would have won but for a bit of an error by the goalkeeper.
