View Full Version : Games Weekend: All Leagues
Borrowing this from the LOI forum as it’s an easy way to post thoughts on the Irish players you’re watching or the updates you’re getting. Instead of one for each week, we can just grow this into a mega thread as it’s a bit easier… See how it goes…
So far… goals for Hogan (Birmingham, 1 up against Plymouth), Mandroiu (Lincoln, a penalty, 1 up against Blackpool) and Cashin (Derby 3-1 up against Peterborough).
Assists for Manning, Molumby.
Mandroiu assisted Lincoln’s second too. Hogans goal sounds like a tap in.
Delap got an assist for Hull last night too along with Sykes for Bristol in their 1-1 draw. Delap does really well, strong, pace, good ball across - seems to be growing into the game. Knight also involved in the Bristol equalizer (and features in many of the positive highlights with surging runs from midfield) and another good ball across this time from from Sykes, who also missed a bit of a sitter in the first half. And Connolly definitely should have scored…

This thread didn't really get going after it was started, but maybe it should have.
To me this weekend feels like one where we really are starting to see a genuine turning point in terms of the development of younger Irish players. Looking across the leagues:
Premier League - Evan Ferguson (04) goal, Chiedozie Ogbene (97 but a late developer) assist and a debut for Alex Murphy (04). Plus the prospect of Caoimhin Kelleher finally getting a run of games in a Top 6 team.
Championship - Goal and an assist for Andrew Moran (03), goals for Azaz (00), Sykes (97) and the still uncapped Sammie Szmodics, who is the division's top scorer.
In the lower leagues there were also goals for, among others, Dan Mandroiu (98), Killian Phillips (02), Barry Cotter (98) and Connor O'Riordan (03), while Troy the Boy (02) got a goal and an assist in the Eredivisie.
As well as the Premier League and Championship lads it's really encouraging to see Jake O'Brien playing regularly in Ligue 1, Festy in Serie A and AGM (as well as Troy) in the Eredivisie. Even Ryan Johansson's name appeared on a team sheet in the Bundesliga today.
I still think we're two years of development away from having a team we can be proud of but, if we can avoid another disaster like Stephen Kenny when choosing our next manager, I really think we might start to see some significant improvement in our fortunes in the next couple of years to get us to a position where we're looking like a team that could do a bit of damage at Euro 2028, rather than just scrape qualification because we're hosting games.
Is there a way of stickying the thread so it's at the top of page one and easier to find.

Goal for Andy Lyons today. Has worked his way back into the team as a starter after a rough time. Goal sounds like a beauty. Left foot, left side of the box, top right corner.
Who knows if he’s ours or not but Tom Cannon getting the last 30 minutes for Leicester against Plymouth and I’m pretty sure it’s his first appearance of the season.

A very rare goalless Saturday for our lads in the Championship.
Sounds like Bazunu had a great game for about 96 minutes for Southampton before making an error to concede right at the end. Up to that it looked like he was going to be the good news Irish story of the day, so a disappointing day overall in the end.
The longer the Premier League season goes on the more it looks like the three promoted teams will be getting relegated again, which is not great from our point of view either.

I wonder is an idea for the thread to try summarise Irish players' match ratings for the weekend? Gives a decent view of who's done ok or not, even if they don't score?
Whoscored has match ratings for every game in the (let's say) top three English divisions, plus Serie A/Ligue 1/SPL/Eredivisie. Below that is probably not worrying about. You can argue about ratings of course, but at least when they're centralised (and not off, say, the club's website) then they should be reasonably objective. They certainly won't care that the player is Irish for example.
Might need a different poster to update each week though!
On that basis, we have -
Premier Division
Palace 1-2 Liverpool - Kelleher an unused sub
Man Utd 0-3 Bournemouth - Travers and Kilkenny both unused subs
Wolves 1-1 Forest - Doherty 6.1 (got the last 20 minutes). Omobamidele gone from the Forest bench again
Brighton 1-1 Burnley - Ferguson 6.7; O'Shea 6.6. Cullen and Obafemi not on the bench. Is Cullen injured?
Sheffield United 1-0 Brentford - Adedokun an unused sub
Christ, that's slim pickings...
Championship
Sunderland 1-2 WBA - Molumby 6.7
Blackburn 0-2 Leeds - Moran 6.4; Szmodmics 5.8
QPR 2-0 Hull - Armstrong 6.1 (got the last 20 as a sub); Christie 6.5; McLoughlin 6.6; Connolly 6.0 (played the second half); Dunne an unused sub
Huddersfield 1-1 Bristol City - Knight 6.4
Leicester 4-0 Plymouth - Cannon 6.0 (still has an Irish flag by his name on it :p)
Boro 0-2 Ipswich - Gilbert an unused sub
Norwich 0-0 Preston - Duffy 7.4; Idah 5.8; Browne 7.4; Brady 6.4 (a good rating given he only played three minutes). Keane and Cunningham unused subs
Stoke 0-1 Wednesday - Clark 6.8; McNally 7.2; Stevens 6.3
Watford 1-1 Southampton - Bazunu 6.7; Manning 6.3; Smallbone 6.0 (came on after 86 - not sure why he has an English flag by his name!)
Cardiff 1-0 Millwall - McGuinness 6.8; Robinson 6.0 (taken off at half-time); Emakhu 6.0 (came on with ten to go)
Rotherham 1-2 Swansea - Kelly 6.2 (got the last five minutes)
Scottish Premier
Aberdeen 2-1 Hearts - Hayes 7.1; McGrath 7.8
St Mirren 2-0 Ross County - Brown 7.0
Rangers 3-1 Dundee - Shaughnessy 6.8
Motherwell 1-1 St Johnstone - Blaney 7.0; Wilkinson 6.0 (last 10 only); Carey 7.4; Costelloe 6.0 (last 5 only)
League One
Northampton 3-0 Fleetwood - Lawal 6.0
Leyton Orient 0-3 Derby - Cashin 8.3; Hourihane 7.3; Collins 6.5
Burton 1-2 Stevenage - Bennett 6.4
Exeter 0-1 Port Vale - Sweeney 7.6
Reading 1-3 Barnsley - Connell 6.5; O'Keeffe 6.7; Cotter 6.2 (last 10 only)
Wigan 0-0 Lincoln - Adeeko 6.6; O'Cononor 6.9; Mandroiu 6.4; Roughan 6.0; Duffy 6.2 (the last three all came on in the last 15); Shodipo an unused sub
Blackpool 3-0 Carlisle - Hamilton 6.8; Lyons 7.8; Maguire 6.4
Bristol Rovers 1-1 Cheltenham - Seán Long 6.4; Keena 6.0 (last 10 only)
Wycombe 0-1 Shrewsbury - Keogh 6.6; Sadlier 6.2; Phillips 6.6; Sobowale an unused sub
Eredivisie
Twente 4-2 Excelsior - Parrott 7.3
So the positives - Parrott, Cashin, Lyons, Duffy, Browne, McGrath
And the downers - Szmodmics, Idah, Connolly, Robinson

Taylor started and played 87 for Ipswich and Harness came on to play the last fifteen Pineappler. At first glance alone your thing is in ruins man, ruins.
Have Bournemouth got a massive injury list or did Kilkenny actually make a PL bench ?

Good spots Crafty! Both marked as English on whoscored. I was flicking down it for Irish flags (and caught a couple - like Smallbone - who are down as English). I could well have missed others.
7.1 for Taylor and 6.4 for Harness (again a respectable rating for a 15 minute cameo)
Bournemouth have eight players listed as injured on livescore (https://www.livescore.com/en/football/england/premier-league/manchester-united-vs-bournemouth/968223/lineups/) but tbh beyond Darren Randolph I don't really know if any are starters or what. (For clarity, I at least know Randolph isn't a starter). But Kilkenny was on the bench alright. Was there midweek too, but September was his last time on the bench before that.
Yeah, Cullen is injured. He missed the last game too.
Good idea Pineapple.

Gavin Kilkenny isn't going to make it in the Premier League, but given the way the result was going yesterday it would have been nice to have seen Bournemouth give him his few minutes in the sun, similar to what Wolves did with Conor Ronan last season. He has waited a long time there with no reward , if they're not going to give him a few minutes when they're 3-0 up, when will they do it, and what's the point in him being there otherwise?
Similar to Ronan I can see him in the MLS or a similar league within a year or two, but it would be nice to see him become a Premier League player first.

Just to finish off the ratings from the weekend -
No Ogbene or Coleman today. Alex Murphy was the only Irish player in any of the Premier League squads I think, and he was an unused sub.
Lyon 3-0 Toulouse - 7.3 for O'Brien; chipped in with an assist for the opener.
Killie 2-1 Celtic - Ndaba 6.4; Johnstone 6.8; Scales 7.3 (only Palma scored higher, marginally - slightly surprisingly, Scales has the third-highest average rating of any Celtic player this season , which you wouldn't expect as Celtic defenders shouldn't have that much to do)
Inter 4-0 Udinese - 6.3 for Ebosele; actually one of their better ratings. Was taken off on the hour with the score already 4-0.

Rory Finneran is on the bench for Blackburn tonight.
Midfielder. 15 years old.
& I believe he's dual eligible.
Goals for Browne and Keane in the first half tonight for Preston against Huddersfield. Assist for Sammie Szmodics too.

Had a full round of Champions League and Championship games in midweek - a few decent performances...
Champions League
Celtic 2-1 Feyernoord - Johnstone 7.1; Scales 7.7. Scales named man-of-the-match, and BBC agreed, as elated has noted on his own thread.
Championship
Blackburn 2-1 Bristol City - Szmodics 7.1; Moran 5.5; Sykes 6.8; Knight 7.7. Moran badly caught in possession for the Bristol City goal, which was scored by Sykes and set up by Knight.
Huddersfield 1-3 Preston - Browne 8.0; Keane 7.3; Brady 6.1. Brady got the last ten minutes only. Browne and Keane both on target; Browne named man-of-the-match. Cunningham an unused sub
Rotherham 0-2 WBA - Kelly 5.9 (last ten minutes only); Molumby 6.2
Watford 1-2 Ipswich - Harness 6.5; Taylor an unused sub
Stoke 1-1 Sunderland - Bonham 6.0; McNally 7.1; Clark an unused sub
QPR 0-0 Plymouth - Dunne 7.2; Armstrong 6.0 (injury time sub); Azaz 6.9 (unlucky to be the one to make way when Plymouth went down to ten after 25 minutes)
Norwich 3-1 Wednesday - Duffy 7.1; Idah 6.6. Idah played up top in a 4-2-3-1 it seems; the 3 behind him managed three goals, two assists and a shot off the woodwork between them, but nothing doing for Idah
Leicester 3-2 Millwall - Cannon 6.1 (got the last 20); Emakhu an unused sub
Coventry 1-1 Southampton - Bazunu 6.5; Manning 6.7; Smallbone 7.1
Cardiff 0-1 Birmingham - McGuinness 6.3; Robinson 6.0; Hogan an unused sub
Boro 1-2 Hull - Christie 6.8; Connolly 6.5; McLoughlin 6.3 (last 15 only); Gilbert an unused sub
So positives - Scales, Knight, Browne, Keane
And negatives - Robinson, Molumby, Moran; Bonham
Goal for Connolly - first in 11 games. Cross from Delap and a simple finish for Connolly.
Two goals for Azaz today. The first was a penalty, the second he swept home. And he is earning a lot of plaudits for his overall display from the fans online.

Few whoscored.com ratings from the weekend, in case that's still of interest!
Premier League
Forest 0-2 Spurs - Omobamidele an unused sub
Man City 2-2 Palace - Adamarola an unused sub
Newcastle 3-0 Fulham - Murphy an unused sub
Burnley 0-2 Everton - O'Shea 6.5; Obafemi and Cullen unused subs. Cullen has only played five minutes in four squad appearances since the start of November. No sign of Coleman
Arsenal 2-0 Brighton - Ferguson 5.9; came off after an hour
Brentford 1-2 Villa - Collins 5.8 (came on for the last 15 minutes with Brentford down to ten men)
West Ham 3-0 Wolves - Doherty 6.0 (got the last ten minutes)
Liverpool 0-0 United - Kelleher an unused sub
Pretty depressing stuff all round there really.
Championship
Ipswich 2-2 Norwich - Harness 6.2; Taylor 6.1 (both late subs); Duffy 7.4; Idah 6.5; Springett 6.0 (came on for Idah with five to go)
Bristol City 0-0 Sunderland - O'Leary 8.6 (man of the match); Sykes 7.0; Knight 6.4
Plymouth 3-2 Rotherham - Azaz 9.6 (man of the match - hit the woodwork in addition to the two goals and an assist); Kelly 5.9 (last five minutes only)
Millwall 1-1 Huddersfield - Emakhu an unused sub
Hull 3-0 Coventry - Christie 6.5; Connolly 7.9; McLoughlin an unused sub; McGuinness 6.0; Robinson 6.2 (last 15 only)
Swansea 1-2 Middlesbrough - Gilbert and Kavanagh unused subs
Preston 1-5 Watford - Browne 7.0; Keane 7.1 (scored his sixth of the season); Brady 6.2 (came on after an hour)
Wednesday 2-1 QPR - Dunne 7.2; Armstrong 6.5 (first start in two months, but was taken off at half-time)
Southampton 4-0 Blackburn - Bazunu 7.6; Smallbone 7.0; Manning dropped to the bench and didn't come on; Moran 6.1; Szmodics 5.8; Gilsenan back on the bench for the first time in two months, but didn't come on
WBA 1-1 Stoke - Molumby 6.0 (last five only - he's only started two games since mid September); Bonham 7.2; McNally 7.0; Clark an unused sub
League One
Cambridge 2-1 Blackpool - Hamilton 6.4
Barnsley 1-1 Charlton - Connell 6.9; O'Keeffe 7.3; Cotter an unused sub
Bolton 1-2 Bristol Rovers - Toal 7.0 (and scored)
Carlisle 2-2 Northampton - Maguire 6.0 (last 5 only)
Cheltenham 1-2 Orient - S Long 6.8; Keena 5.8 (last 10 only)
Oxford 3-0 Burton - Bennett 6.0 (last 15 only)

Stevenage 1-1 Exeter - Sweeney 6.8
Shrewsbury 0-3 Portsmouth - Sobowale 6.0 (last 20 only); Rafferty 6.6; Shaughnessy 7.0
Port Vale 3-2 Wigan - Adeeko 6.0
Derby 1-1 Wycombe - Cashin 7.4; Hourihane 6.1; Collins 5.8; Sadlier 6.8; Phillips 6.7; Keogh 6.1 (last 20 only)
Fleetwood 0-1 Peterborough - Lawal 6.6
Scottish Premier
St Johnstone 1-0 Hibs - Carey 8.0 (and scored); Costelloe an unused sub
St Mirren 0-0 Motherwell - Blaney 6.9; Wilkinson an unused sub
Ross County 0-1 Dundee - Brown 6.3; Shaughnessy 8.0 (and scored)
Livi 0-0 Killie - Ndaba 6.5
Celtic 0-2 Hearts - Johnstone 5.5 (taken off at halftime); Scales 7.8 (interestingly Celtic's second league defeat in a row, but Scales has gotten an excellent rating both times)
Other leagues
Udinese 2-2 Sassuolo - Ebosele 6.4
Monaco 0-1 Lyon - O'Brien 6.8
Excelsior 1-1 Go Ahead Eagles - Parrott 7.0
So good weeks (7.5+) for Scales, Carey, Shaughnessy, Connolly, Bazunu, O'Leary, Azaz
And bad weeks (<6.3) for Ferguson, McGuinness, Molumby, Moran, Szmodics (two poor games in the last three for the division's top scorer), O'Connor, Adeeko, Hourihane, Johnstone, Manning (for being dropped)

Few more ratings from the weekend - little enough Irish interest in what's left of it...
Premier League
Palace 1-1 Brighton - Ferguson an unused sub
Forest 2-3 Bournemouth - Travers an unused sub; a new manager for Forest but still no sign of Omobamidele in the squad
Luton 1-0 Newcastle - Ogbene 6.2 (last 10 only); Murphy an unused sub
Fulham 0-2 Burnley - O'Shea 7.0; Cullen and Obafemi unused subs
Kelleher on the bench for Liverpool this evening, Doherty's Wolves in action tomorrow, and Collins' Brentford not in action as Man City are at the World Club Cup
Tets might know more, but it seems like there's less Irish involvement in the Premier this year than last? And for next season you could be looking at Cullen/Obafemi/O'Shea/Ogbene/Egan being relegated, and potentially no Irish players being promoted to replace them. Harness and Taylor are the only two in the automatic promotion places (are they even confirmed for us?) and you could have Leeds taking the third spot for example. Coleman and Doherty may move on in the summer too
Championship
Swansea 2-1 Preston - Brady 6.2 (came off at half-time), Browne 6.5, Keane unused sub
Bristol City 3-2 Hull - O'Leary 6.3, Sykes 6.6, Knight 7.9 (and scored), Christie 6.3, Connolly 7.4 (and also scored), McLoughlin unused sub
Leeds 4-0 Ipswich - Harness 6.1 (last 25 only), Taylor unused sub
Leicester 3-0 Rotherham - Cannon an unused sub, Kelly 5.8 (last 20 only)
Boro 1-0 West Brom - Gilbert and Kavanagh unused subs, Molumby 6.1 (last 20 only)
Norwich 2-0 Huddersfield - Duffy 7.1, Idah 6.1 (dropped to the bench this week; got the last 25)
Plymouth 3-3 Birmingham - Azaz 6.2 (disappointing score given he got an assist), Wright and Hogan unused subs
QPR 0-1 Southampton - Dunne 6.5, Armstrong 6.0 (last 15 only), Bazunu 7.0, Smallbone 6.3, Manning 6.8 (came on after 30 minutes - may help him regain his spot next week)
Stoke 0-0 Millwall - Bonham 6.9, McNally 7.5, Clark an unused sub, Emakhu 6.3 (not bad for an injury-time sub)
Wednesday 1-2 Cardiff - McGuinness 6.5, Robinson 6.0 (taken off before the hour)
Blackburn 1-2 Watford - Moran 6.3
League One
Derby 3-1 Lincoln - Cashin 7.0, Hourihane 7.4 (and scored), Collins 7.4 (and scored), O'Connor 6.6, Mandroiu 6.7 (also scored), Roughan 5.9 (last 20 only), Duffy an unused sub
Cambridge 2-0 Exeter - Sweeney 7.4
Bolton 3-2 Orient - Toal 7.6
Blackpool 3-1 Bristol Rovers - Hamilton 6.3, Lyons 6.1
Barnsley 2-1 Stevenage - Connell 6.9, O'Keeffe 6.2, Cotter 6.1 (came on after an hour)
Shrewsbury 1-2 Peterborough - Sobowale unused sub
Reading 2-0 Wigan - Adeeko unused sub
Portsmouth 1-1 Fleetwood - Rafferty 6.4; Shaughnessy 7.0; Scully 5.9 (last 5 only), Lawal 6.8
Wycombe 1-1 Port Vale - Phillips 6.3, Sadlier 7.6 (and scored), Keogh an unused sub
Carlisle 0-1 Cheltenham - Maguire 5.9 (came on after an hour), Long 6.8, Keena 5.9 (last 10 only)
Charlton 1-1 Burton - Bennett 6.4
SPL
Celtic 2-0 Livi - Scales 7.8 (first goal of the season too), Johnston on the bench
Rangers 2-0 St Johnstone - Carey and Costelloe both 6.0, and both came on with 20 to go
Aberdeen 2-1 Livi - McGrath 6.4 (last 10 only), Hayes an unused sub
Killie 2-1 St Johnstone - Ndaba 7.2, Carey 6.3, Costelloe 6.0 (got the last 15 this time)
Other
Torino 1-1 Udinese - Ebosele 6.9. A late equaliser for Torino mean Udinese still have only one win all season and are two points off relegation
Lyon 1-0 Nantes - O'Brien 6.8. A third clean sheet win in a row for Lyon and they club off the foot of the table and out of the drop zone
Ajax 2-2 PEC Zwolle - the Dutch league is on the winter break now until mid-Jan, but I missed Garcia MacNulty (6.4) last week...
So slim enough pickings this week all told -
A good week (7.5+) for Knight, McNally, Toal, Sadlier, Scales
And a poor week (<6.3) for Brady, Azaz, Idah (like Manning last week, including him here partly as he was dropped), Robinson, Lyons, O'Keeffe, Johnston (also dropped)

Waited until after the final round of fixtures before Christmas to check this - turns out there's an increase on last year, 61 appearances before Christmas last season(44 starts/17 intros) and 95(65 s/30 i) so far this season. Also nine goals scored this season, by four different goalscorers. There were eight goals scored in total last season, by three players.
The 2022/23 season appearances were affected by the break for the World Cup, but it's also an increase on the 2021/22 season, when there were 73 appearances(50 s/23 i) before December 25th

Last year was especially awful to be fair. This year will be better but still one of the worst on record. Though we do at least have a few EPL regulars/semi-regulars now in Ferguson, Collins, Ogbene, O'Shea and Egan if he was fit. The first four of those are all reasonably young as well. A real shame Cullen has lost his place and Doherty hasn't nailed down a regular spot though.

Don't think there'll be any Irish involvement in today's Premier League games, and with a full round of Championship games tomorrow, may as well do another update today -
Premier League
Luton 2-3 Chelsea - Ogbene 7.0 (second half only, but that's when they almost turned it around)
Wolves 3-0 Everton - Doherty 6.0 (last 5 only), Hodge an unused sub, Coleman 6.4 (got the last half hour - another return from injury, which is great to see)
Villa 3-2 Burnley - O'Shea 6.4, Obafemi an unused sub, but no sign of Cullen - opposite of last week
Palace 3-1 Brentford - Collins 6.4, Adedokun an unused sub

So good weeks (7.5+) for Connolly, Delap, Cashin, Hourihane, Shaughnessy. And a shout-out to Patrick Casey, an 18 year-old making the first-team squad for the first time (at Charlton)
And bad weeks (<6.3) for Bazunu, Azaz, Browne, McGuinness, Sykes, Phillips, Sadlier, Hamilton, O'Connor, Sobowale, McGrath
Interesting to see a couple of players appear in the "good weeks" a couple of times now - Scales, Cashin and (in fairness to him!) Connolly

Ferguson hopefully in action tomorrow for Brighton, and presumably no Irish involvement tonight (Liverpool v Newcastle - Kelleher and Murphy likely to stay on the bench), but a full round of lower league games today with some good performances -
Championship

Hadn't realised there was a full Hogmanay schedule up in Scotland today! So I missed more updates than I realised above...
Premier League
Liverpool 4-2 Newcastle - Kelleher and Murphy unused subs
West Ham 0-0 Brighton - Coventry and Kavanagh unused subs; Ferguson 6.5 (last 25 only)
SPL
St Mirren 0-3 Celtic - Scales 7.5, Johnston an unused sub
Ross County 0-3 Aberdeen - Brown 6.3, McGrath 9.3 (scored twice), Hayes an unused sub
Rangers 3-1 Killie - Ndaba 6.2, O'Hara an unused sub
So can add Ndaba to the "bad weeks" and McGrath and Scales to the good weeks.
No ratings for the FA Cup afaik, so few enough games this weekend (the continental lads really).

WhoScores has ratings for some random FA Cup games this weekend - mostly involving higher division teams, but not always. May as well put them all up - gives a few random names. I didn't know Shaun Williams was still playing for example.

Exeter 2-1 Carlisle - Sweeney 7.2, Maguire 6.5
Serie A

So good weeks (7.5+) for Armstrong, O'Connor and Hourihane
And bad weeks (<6.3) for Collins, Dunne, Masterson, Keane, Browne, Sobowale, Keena and Sadlier. Some of those (Masterson, Keane, Browne, Sobowale) due to playing a higher division side in the Cup - but flip side is that seeing Keane and Browne not really step up against Chelsea puts in perspective where mid-table Championship is at

More ratings for the past week - same caveat as before as to how much exactly you want to read into the ratings, but I think from going through them they seem reasonable enough, in as much as you can reduce a performance to a number of course.
Premier League
Arsenal 5-0 Palace - Adaramola an unused sub
Brentford 3-2 Forest - Collins 6.3, Omobamidele 6.3
Bournemouth 0-4 Liverpool - Travers, Kelleher and Kilkenny all unused subs

QPR 2-0 Millwall - Armstrong 7.6 (and scored), Dunne an unused sub, McNamara 6.5, no sign of Emakhu
Stoke 1-2 Birmingham - McNally 6.5, Bonham and Hogan unused subs, Long 6.5 (last 15 only)
Norwich 2-0 WBA - Duffy 7.3, Idah 5.9 (last 10 only - goals for Sergeant and Rowe not great news for Idah)
Blackburn 1-1 Huddersfield - Szmodics 6.6, Moran 6.2 (last 20 only)
Bristol City 1-1 Watford - O'Leary 6.0, Knight 7.1
Boro 1-1 Rotherham - Azaz 5.8, Gilbert and Kelly unused subs

Alkmaar 2-2 Zwolle - MacNulty 6.9
Liege 0-1 Kortrijk - Afolabi 5.9 (last 25 only)
No ratings for the midweek FA Cup replays or for the French/Scottish Cup games this weekend.
So that means good weeks (7.5+) for Smallbone, Armstrong, Cashin (twice), Hourihane, Collins, Hamilton, Parrott
And bad weeks (<6.3) for McGuinness, O'Leary, Azaz, Connell, Ebosele
Good to see the good weeks outnumbering the bad weeks for a change! (Though that may be a factor of where I made the completely arbitrary cut-off of course)

Pretty crappy week in general really...
I know you’ve talked about how you’ve arbitrarily selected numbers to see if people have been good/bad… from my equally arbitrary perspective, 7.5 does seem a fairly high bar for “good”… is there any way to gauge from the site you use what the usual good, great, “star man” ratings are?
Anyway, whatever about that, it’s a sterling service you are providing!

28/01/2024, 9:21 PM
There's a chart on their site (https://www.whoscored.com/Explanations) which shows the percentages of players getting each rating. It doesn't quite take the cut-offs I have, but you can estimate that maybe 15% of players will get a 7.5 or higher (I'm assuming more players score 7.0-7.5 than score 7.5-8.0 - standard bell curve distribution) and possibly a similar amount will score under 6.3. I don't know how that chart factors in late subs because of course someone coming on with five minutes to go is going to do well to move much beyond the starting point of 6.0, and there's plenty of late subs. I don't count subs in the "bad weeks" for that reason
Of course the real reason I went with those bands is it was fewer players so less work :p

So very good weeks (8.5+) for Kelleher (may as well call out performances like that one!), Browne
Good weeks (7.5+) for Ogbene, Johnstone (impressive achievement for a 20-minute cameo), Keane, Goodrham, O'Neill, Idah, Ndaba, Adaramola
Bad weeks (<6.3) for O'Shea, Azaz, Bazunu (twice), Smallbone (twice), Obafemi, Negru, Adeeko, Kilkenny, Graydon, Costelloe, Afolabi
And very bad weeks (<5.5) for Omobamidele (don't normally include subs here, but he got the whole second half, so I suppose similar to playing badly and being taken off at half-time)

Absolutely brilliant analysis, Stu! Love reading this every week. Sincerely appreciated!

Cheers Manc!
Yep, I think it can add to the player threads - it's great when they bump with (mostly) positive news, but it feels this adds a wider dimension across the board
And I think the ratings do tend to be quite reasonable - Ogbene and Kelleher this week for example. So Omobamidele getting a 5.4 off the bench is a worry - looks like that move to Forest is looking a bad one after all, despite his brief flurry of starts. Collins got a couple of similar ratings and was dropped

Where are the ratings from? Quality the depth of information. Especially at lower level. Noticed we had a lot hooked at half time this weekend like Kilkenny (although good to see Lawal getting the assist from midfield). Hopefully Omo is a blip. Confidence looks low though. Nice one once again.
