With cup football fever in the air and the ongoing discussion regarding the lack of athmosphere in the showgrounds I was thinkering on an idea that could help to generate some much needed atmosphere at games but will need the cooperation of the more industrious members of this forum. In the past darco penned a ditty when most people approved of and indeed others went on to prove that they too could turn their hands/minds to the composing arts.
With this in mind I'm thinking if someone was to pen a ditty which would become the Bit O' Red Anthem. When the tune is decided upon then a competition could be held amoung the various schools around the region, similar to the sound in the ground competition held a couple of seasons ago. One school per game comes in to add the required atmosphere singing our anthem and the winner can be chosen in the same manner as the player of the month.

The song will have to be relativally short and catchy.

well, as Communist europe is dead and gone, the "Red Flag" is the anthem

Well, it does reflect hard times, everybody against you, and keeping the red flag flying here

Cannot see Local TD as pictured in the weekender going along with it though! :D

Didnt Jimmy Hill write the anthem for Coventry to try to boost them,
and give them meaning or something, so maybe ye could get the MC
to rap out a tune or two :D

Whatever the season
We'll follow our team
We're Sligo Rovers
We rule supreme
We'll never be mastered
By those Finn Harps *******s
We'll keep the red flag
Flying high
Flying high up in the sky etc etc (ad nauseum)

Don't know if those schoolies will be allowed to swear though ;) :D

Regig an olde song... like liverpool done Fields of Anfield Road.

Olé Olé Olé Olé, Olé Olé
Olé Olé Olé Olé, Olé Olé

We gotta' fight for Title
Go and Compete

We'll prepare and go, and do our best
we'll put 'em under pressure
The game is about being affective
Being aggressive winning the ball
Getting on with the play
We'll play proper football.

Olé Olé Olé Olé, Olé Olé
Olé Olé Olé Olé, Olé Olé

We're all part of Connor's Army
We're all off to the showgies
And really shake em up
When we go up
'Cos Rovers will be back to where the belong

Put 'em under pressure

It's not going to be easy for us
But it's not going to be easy for them either
Re-inflict our game on the people
We'll play proper football.

You've got a game to win
Play it on the Ground !!

Yeah I know this is crap but the best way to go is pick a tune and rewrite.

(To the tune of the fields of athenry)

Oh aye the reds will never die,
Where once we stacked three trophies high
We had Kenny on the wing Eddie Annand made us sing.
Oh you’ll never keep the super Rovers down

Hail the Rovers.
(Air; Donegal Danny)

Hail the Rovers, Hail the Rovers, Hail the Rovers once more.
Hail the Rovers, Hail the Rovers, Hail the Rovers and watch them score.

From the sunny summer days, to the winters wind and rain,
We set forth for that sacred of grounds.
Where we shout on our team in the famous red and white.
And we fill Maugheraboy with the sound.
Where giants of men have worn the shirt with pride,
From the present back to 1928.
We have followed them all, as they played football,
In the Showgrounds, they mastered their fate.

Hail the Rovers, Hail the Rovers, Hail the Rovers once more.
Hail the Rovers, Hail the Rovers, Hail the Rovers and watch them score.

Of our history we are proud, many honours to our name,
And heroes we remember with pride.
From the treble in ninety-four, cup glories galore.
We won two championships at our height.
Sligo Rovers is our name, once again we seek fame,
The Bit O’Reds future is bright.

Hail the Rovers, Hail the Rovers, Hail the Rovers once more.
Hail the Rovers, Hail the Rovers, Hail the Rovers and watch them score.
Hail the Rovers, Hail the Rovers, Hail the Rovers and watch us score.

Two from a while back..

Sean Conner of Belfast Town. 

(Air Sean South of Garryowen)

1
‘Twas a dreary day in noughty four, when Sean Conner came to town,
The Rovers were a beaten team, their heads; they all hung down,
They had no courage on the field of play; their faces wore a frown.
But, Sean said “ Do not fear for long, as I’ll turn this team around.”

2
He set about it straight away, he searched both near and far.
“But first I need a number 2, and that man will be Gerry Carr”
A hero from the glory days, way back in ninety four,
And now the man to lead this band, up to the “prem-e-ore.”

3
He had the basis of a team; he needed just some more.
So, he placed his trust in O’Hara to close tight the door.
With the captain McNamara, and Burnsie by his side,
Two stalwarts of Conner’s men would stop the rushing tide.

4
Cretaro with his skill so fine, and O’Donnell from Donegal,
O’Grady, Faz and Foley too, stood up like a brick wall.
Kupono Low one of the best, that you will ever see,
With Flannery attacking strong, with the mighty Paul Mc T.

5
Alvin Rouse, Alverez too, both favourite’s of the fans,
Curran, O’Dwyer, McCarthy, Sheridan and Gorman,
Conal Murtagh from up north, McCann and Kusten,
Gallagher and Feeney, and Coolooney man Alan Flynn.

6
From now we will hear the cheering sound, of the Bit O’Red
As we march behind the Rovers, with Conner at the head.
Soon we will see the glory days, up in the Showgrounds,
And the man who will lead us all the way, will be Sean Conner from Belfast Town.

or

Sure it's old, but it is beautiful
And the colors they are fine
It was worn at St.Colmans Park, Station Road,
The Showgrounds, and against Club Brugges .
Sure my father wore it when a youth
In the bygone days of yore,
And it's in The Shed I love to wear
The jersey my father wore.

Sure I'm an Loyal Sligoman
And from North Sligo I came
To see my lads go (scoring)?
Once or twice in every game.
And to dream of the players
Who played in days of yore
All those heroes of the past
Like Eddie Annand they did score.

Sure it's old but it is beautiful,
It's the best you've ever seen,
Being worn since Ninteen Twenty Eight
In that little isle of green
From my Bit O`Red forefathers
It descended with a lore
It's a terror to the Finn Harps boys
To see The Rovers Score.

So here I am in Sligo Town
To find Sean Connor you see
And I'm hoping that the Belfast Man
Will come to welcome me.
A true Red i have just arrived
From the dear old Ulster shore
and From the shed i want to see
Faz and McT. Score.

Chorus

Oh, when I'm going to leave you all
Oh, good luck to you I'll say
As I cross the raging sea, my boys,
Surely in the Premier Division they`ll play.
And returning to our native place
To the Premier Division once more
To be welcomed by those Derry Men
In the jersey my father wore.

Chorus
