Representatives of the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) and international governing body Fifa will inspect the newly-laid synthetic playing surface at Dundalk’s Oriel Park today (Tuesday) before a decision is made on the suitability of the venue for Friday night’s FAI Carlsberg Cup clash with local rivals Drogheda United.

Dundalk have played all their home games this season away from Oriel Park while work on the venue was ongoing.

The surface was finally completed at the weekend, but there remains a doubt over its readiness for Friday night’s game after reservations were expressed by Drogheda manager Paul Doolin on Monday.

A team of inspectors will cast their eyes over the pitch today, with a decision expected by early evening.

Should the surface be deemed unready for Friday’s game, it would represent a major blow to the Dundalk club, who have planned to unveil their new-look venue in the FAI Cup third round meeting with their County Louth rivals since the draw was held back in June.
