Nagle take Cup
Nagle Community College 3-0 PCC Falcarragh
There was no joy for Falcarragh as Nagle Community school from Cork took the Dr O’ Neill Senior Cup at Belfield on Wednesday. Winners of the competion 20 years ago, they probably didn’t to lose by the margin they did but it was always going to uphill for the Donegal outfit once they fell behind shortly after the restart.
To be fair, Nagle didn’t sit back on their lead with Falcarragh keeper Shaun Boylan producing a string of good saves to keep his team in the game. Bu
Falcarragh were short changed all afternoon in midfield where Keith Mullen and man of the match, James Cummins, tigerishly defended their sector.
Such was Cummins influence at that stage that Paul Feeney, part of a three man triangle along with Joe Sharkey and Philip Sweeney was moved out to the wing after just five minutes.
The football was not up to the high standard of last years affair but there was much to admire about this game with both teams giving it 100%.
Falcarragh were very impressive at the back with the Mc Gee brothers, Eamon and Neil forming two thirds of a three man defence along with Joe Mc Fadden.
And in midfield Sweeney worked tirelessly to get his team back into contention after the Leesiders had stunned Falcarragh with a goal two minutes into the second half.
But it was always going to be tough against a team who accounted for last year’s winners, St Mary’s Galway in the semi-final.
There was to little to report in the first half but Falcarragh nonetheless had their chances with Joe Sharkey shooting over on twenty five minutes.
An unmarked Sweeney then headed over on 35 minutes with Micheal Gibson also spurning a good chance after good work by James Hunter.
But the second half saw a turn round in fortunes with Steven Barrett finally putting Nagle in front on 47 minutes after Darren Swaine had put in a cross from the right hand side.
Boylan then produced a fine save to deny Swaine while at the other end Hunter was withdrawn to make way for Shaun Bowe.
And although Sweeney came close shortly on the hour , Falcarragh’s were handed another blow with ten minutes to go when Steven Barrett beat Boylan with a low shot into the bottom corner following a free from outside the box.
And it was all over with five minutes to go when Nagle full back, Alan Shaw, found the back of the net with a lob from outside the box.
Nagle Community School: Long; O’ Leary, Mc Governn, Shaw; Barrett, Cummins, Mullen, O Donovan; De Puis, Swaine
PCC Falcarragh; Boylan; Mc Fadden, E Mc Gee, N Mc Gee; Sharkey, Feeney, Sweeney, Gibson, Mc Ginty, Cannon; Hunter
Langan for Sharkey ht, Bowe for Hunter 55 minutes, Scanlon for Mc Ginty 60 mins
