Kenny puts boot into Derry hecklers

August 18, 2005

Derry City manager Stephen Kenny has criticised a section of the Candystripes support which, he says, has routinely sent verbal abuse in the direction of some of the club’s players in recent weeks.

Derry are preparing for the biggest of their season against eircom League leaders Cork City at the Brandywell on Friday night.

However, former Bohemians boss Kenny – who has transformed Derry from relegation candidates to title contenders in his 12 months in charge – feels that his players should not have to endure the type of abuse sent in their direction during the recent home draw with Bray Wanderers.

In a statement published in the Derry Journal, the Candystripes boss said: “Home attendances are vitally important to us, that goes without saying. I welcome passionate supporters which gives rise to passionate players, therefore, as we prepare for one of the biggest games of the season this weekend, I have become worried that a small section of Derry City supporters are actually abusing their own players, particularly when such players may give the ball away.

"I noticed that members of our playing staff were receiving grief during our last home game against Bray Wanderers and I found that astonishing.

“I couldn’t believe it, we have so many young players involved in the squad this season and anyone who knows anything about the game will agree that it’s not always possible for such players to play consistently well.

"And what astonishes me more is that these players have not lost a game since May of this season. We have struggled with injuries, therefore, we’ve been forced to play players out of their more accustomed positions yet that does not seem to be taken into consideration by those involved.

“I think it’s very unfair to abuse our own players and when such situations become evident in the dressing room, then as manager I feel it’s important that I intervene.

“I need Derry City supporters to get firmly and vocally behind the team. I can understand frustration on the terraces but surely such frustration is associated more with a team involved in a relegation battle – not a team actually competing to win the Premier Division Championship.”

Blatant attempt to troll by Bohsfans.

As if you have a chance trying to stir it up with Kenny after Friday night :D

Go back to hating Foley, Ryan, Hawkins, Crowe etc etc......... Its what your clubs fans do best.

Don't try and change the subject, the title of the thread is: Derry fans abuse players, it's nothing to do with Bohs!

I'm meerly, stating the facts; 1. Your fans have abused your players and 2. It takes your manager to go to the press to try and sort it out.

You posted this before, it was moved to relevant section.

However you obviously thought it was deleted, and therefore posted it again in order to see if could create any more controversy.

This really annoys me. Everyone is now thinking that Derry fans are getting on the backs of the palyers due to higher expectations and short memories. This is definitely not true because the afns are not getting on the backs of players.

The people who are doing this are fair-weather spectators (I refuse to use 'fans' or 'supporters') but it is nothing new. When we won the treble players like FElix Healy and Paul Carlyle were abused as was Jim McLuaghlin who obviously has the greatest football management brain in LOI history. The fair-weather supporters of those days along with the local media claimed that Derry had "no flair" even though they were playing football which we haven't seen since at Brandywell and were scoring at will. This trend continued every time we have been successful because when we're not successful these idiots don't attend the games.

Derry are successful this season in comparison to the last 6 years so we now have a few idiots who expect perfection. Anybody abusing the players should be hounded out of the ground by the real fans. I know everyone has a right to their opinion but this does not extend to having a right to abuse some young player and wreck his confidence. I think that real fans have the right to hound these idiots out of the ground as it affects our team's performance and results and hampers the development of young players. A typical example is Ryan Coyle who had a great future but got abuse when we were last truly successful in 97 so lost a lot of confidence.

We might need their entrance fee but we don't need their abuse directed at our players.

Chalkie.

Indeed. He needs lots of excuses for bringing us from 2nd bottom to 2nd in a year. Lots of them.

We're sooooooo unhappy.

He's practically out of a job.........

Mods please merge with Bohsfans previous thread in Derry City sub-forum.

I don't understand why this would or should be moved to the Derry section, as it's of interest to EL fans generally.
I can, of course, understand, why Derry fans might want that to happen. It's amazing how unsubtle people on this board are when they want to supress information that doesn't suit them -- 'please move', 'please merge', please don't let anyone else see this'!

Have to agree. If theres a thread slating drogheda united can I also ask for it to be removed to the drogheda section so less people will see it?

Seriously, we're second in the League, playing great football, large crowds, just beat the champions-elect (!) after 5 odd years of being at the other end of the table.

Stir up whatever you want, we don't really care who sees it. Its been discussed on the Derrycitychat forum for 2 weeks before the article.

The atmosphere created by our fans on Friday night, the previous Friday in Inchicore and every other week previously tells the real story.

Bohs are glad you got rid of him, we're bloody glad we have him. End of.

I wonder will Bohs fans whinge about this to have it moved/deleted

In fairness to Derry fans, I think Bohs fans (and EL fans in general) have a lot of respect for them. I don't really see kenny's justification in criticising them. I hope Derry go on to win the league anyway, god luck to them.

If you had any fans down Belfield way, you might actually be in a position to comment.... :D

Just for the record - Felix didn't get abused as a player, or as a Manager. It's his attitude towards the club since both those periods in his life that make him unpopular today....

I know, just thought it was amusing after the game on Friday.
