Wexford had no answer to the extremely potent attack of Athlone in Ferrycarrig this evening as they lost yet more ground in the race for the play-off places. Wexford started with Charlie, Darragh, Ben, Hughie, Ethan, Dobbsy, Mark, Danny, Corban, Kian and new signing, Luke Browne. Wexford started well and had the ball in the Athlone net after about 30 seconds when Danny Furlong volleyed home after a good Wexford build-up but the referee disallowed it for what seemed to be a handball. Didn’t see it myself. After five minutes, Athlone’s Fuentes appeared to do an ankle and was soon replaced. On 11 minutes, Kian Corbally had a shot for Wexford which deflected off another Wexford player who was deemed to be offside and, six minutes later, Darragh Levingston got a good shot away which Minogue struggled to keep out down at the left corner of his net. Wexford in the ascendancy at this stage with Athlone not having tested Charlie Heffernan in the Wexford goal. That changed, however, on 23 minutes, when Campion-Hinds smacked a worldie into the top corner of the Wexford goal from 30 yards out which gave Heffernan no chance. 1-0 to Athlone. Wexford got on equal terms five minutes later when Danny Furlong provided the headed assist for Dobbsy to rifle a right-footed shot past Minogue for 1-1. Looked like an even game at this stage but Athlone’s Pierrot soon bullied his way past two Wexford defenders to prod a shot past Heffernan and it was 2-1 to Athlone. Wexford’s passing could be more than a bit wayward at times and the loss of two possessions in Wexford’s midfield then twice allowed Athlone to break decisively and Dolia and Leal for Athlone both had comfortable finishes when unmarked at the far post to give Athlone two further goals and a 4-1 lead by halftime.
