Kenny puts boot into Derry hecklers

August 18, 2005

Derry City manager Stephen Kenny has criticised a section of the Candystripes support which, he says, has routinely sent verbal abuse in the direction of some of the club’s players in recent weeks.

Derry are preparing for the biggest of their season against eircom League leaders Cork City at the Brandywell on Friday night.

However, former Bohemians boss Kenny – who has transformed Derry from relegation candidates to title contenders in his 12 months in charge – feels that his players should not have to endure the type of abuse sent in their direction during the recent home draw with Bray Wanderers.

In a statement published in the Derry Journal, the Candystripes boss said: “Home attendances are vitally important to us, that goes without saying. I welcome passionate supporters which gives rise to passionate players, therefore, as we prepare for one of the biggest games of the season this weekend, I have become worried that a small section of Derry City supporters are actually abusing their own players, particularly when such players may give the ball away.

"I noticed that members of our playing staff were receiving grief during our last home game against Bray Wanderers and I found that astonishing.

“I couldn’t believe it, we have so many young players involved in the squad this season and anyone who knows anything about the game will agree that it’s not always possible for such players to play consistently well.

"And what astonishes me more is that these players have not lost a game since May of this season. We have struggled with injuries, therefore, we’ve been forced to play players out of their more accustomed positions yet that does not seem to be taken into consideration by those involved.

“I think it’s very unfair to abuse our own players and when such situations become evident in the dressing room, then as manager I feel it’s important that I intervene.

“I need Derry City supporters to get firmly and vocally behind the team. I can understand frustration on the terraces but surely such frustration is associated more with a team involved in a relegation battle – not a team actually competing to win the Premier Division Championship.”

I think he was saying its not the first time Keeny has had a go at his own fans for criticising players, I think he did it at Bohs too

If you look on the Derry message boards the vast majority of fans are 100% behind SK on this one.

Every ground in the country will have a minority of mouths who put players down, its nothing individual to the Brandywell and you as a Bohs fan should know all about it at Dalymoan! Admire Kenny for coming out and supporting his players. Totally support his actions.

Mods, please move to Derry City sub forum.

Keen followers of that Eircom League bible of honest journalism that is known as Elevenaside.com may also been keen to compare the wording as posted above by Bohsfan, when compared with the wording of the actual Derry Journal article which I have posted below.
Elevenaside's quotes from Kenny are markedly different to that in the original article and in my view portray a more negative view of the situation than is actually the case.

Did they conduct their own interview with Kenny or have they actually paraphrased what he said and requoted?! If the latter is the case then this is shoddy journalism at its best.

Oh and Bohsfan, what a petty attempt at trying to stir it up and seek to retrospectively deny the abuse your own fans regularly throw at your players and ex-manager. We're all four square behind SK as you will see on Friday night.
DERRY JOURNAL TEXT
"As Derry City prepares for one of the biggest games of the season this Friday night against eircom League leaders, Cork City, Brandywell boss Stephen Kenny has voiced his "bitter disappointment" at the actions of "a minority of supporters" who continue to verbally abuse members of his playing staff.
In a surprise statement, the Derry manager said he experienced such abuse during the recent home game against Bray Wanderers adding that such actions had concerned him given the fact that his club had been enjoying a highly successful season so far.
"Home attendances are vitally important to us, that goes without saying.
I couldn't believe it, we have so many young players involved in the squad this season and anyone who knows anything about the game will agree that it's not always possible for such players to play consistently well.
And what astonishes me more is that these players have not lost a game since May of this season. We have struggled with injuries, therefore, we've been forced to play players out of their more accustomed positions yet that does not seem to be taken into consideration by those those involved," suggested Kenny.
"I think it's very unfair to abuse our own players and when such situations become evident in the dressing room, then as manager I feel it's important that I intervene. I need Derry City supporters to get firmly and vocally behind the team. I can understand frustration on the terraces but surely such frustration is associated more with a team involved in a relegation battle - not a team actually competing to win the Premier Division Championship."
However, the Derry boss stressed that he realised such supporters were very much in the minority and he pleaded with those loyal "Candy Striped" fans to intervene and help his players out.
"I can assure all supporters of Derry City Football Club that everyone is trying particularly hard, both on and off the pitch, to achieve the same objectives. Young players will have ups and downs throughout the season but in this case, I think it's fair to point out that as a club, we've had more 'ups' than 'downs' during the current campaign.
"As a manager, I really need everyone pulling in the same direction and while I'm experienced enough to know that all big clubs, including Derry City, have high expectations, there's a limit to the unfair abuse which has been levelled at some members of our squad.
"I think it's also worth noting that Derry City were priced at 33/1 outsiders to win the Premier Division title this season.
We've shocked most observers in the local game and with three games coming up at the Brandywell over the space of another eight days, this club's need total unity on all fronts," he commented.

Every club has them. Its just when the Eircom League clubs get such small crowds they are more audible to everybody.

Down at the Cross they are the same kind of pockets from all parts of the ground.

I know people talk about them paying their money so they have a right to critisise but I wish they could keep their money and **** off.

Posting articles

Can you put a link to the source and post just a section of the article .... it will give the web page a hit and might encourage more reporting on the league.

Derry fans are f uckin scum for doing this!
Kenny has turned them around and they are now 3 pts behind Cork.

Sure if any other team gives their players abuse they're scum, but if its Derry they can just claim it didn't happen and everyone's happy.

I say it must have been serious enough for your manager to go to the papers like that! Not Kenny's style

I usually wouldn't waste my time on idiots like you but you have to be corrected.

Eleven-a-side took the article from the journal and sensationalised it, it was not the actual content. Wish they would get their own journos instead of swiping reports e.t.c from other sites.

Kenny clearly stated in the journal article that it was a very small minority but of course we should just ignore that and brand all Derry fans scum. As you have been told already this minority are audible at every EL ground and it would appear most noteably at Dalymoan!
