The Premiership in England attracted the most nominees with nineteen, followed by Italy’s Serie A with eighteen, Spain’s La Liga with thirteen, the Bundesliga in Germany with three and just two from the Dutch League.



AC Milan heads the list for the most nominations with ten, Chelsea have eight, Real Madrid seven, Manchester United and Juventus six, Barcelona five, Arsenal four, Bayern Munchen three, Inter and PSV Eindhoven two, and there is one each from Champions League winners Liverpool and Valencia.

England leads the way with the most players in the short list with ten, followed by nine Brazilians, seven Italians and five Frenchmen and Argentinians. There are four Dutch and Portuguese players, three Spaniards and two from Germany and the Czech Republic. Sweden, the Ivory Coast, the Ukraine and Cameroon provide each provide one player in the 55.

Stupid selections.Where's Carragher etc. Looks like they just listed players Chelski have bought since Abramovich took over.Drogba and Carvalho?No way.Same goes for Figo,he hardly played all year.Joke.

There's a similar thread on the Irish forum bemoaning the absense of Duff over the inclusion of Robben and Cole. These lists are always full of omissions and bizarre inclusions. :confused:

It's this whole "Cult of Celebrity" thing all over again. We've discussed Duff already. Dida? Not in my book. Drogba? Unbelievable. Sol Campbell, the guy who's been dropped for a 19 year-old Swiss guy?

These are the most high-profile footballers in the world, not the best.

As someone said elsewhere on the board, so what? Let the rest of the world wallow in their own publicity, they'll have a surprise in store when they face Ireland!

I remember in the World Player of the Year Award (is that the one where the national coaches pick their top 3?) in 2002 the North Korean coach picked Rivaldo as his No.1, the same year he was voted Serie A's worst player. That was the year he moved to Milan and struggled to get a game. Some baffling choices. :confused: Cult of celebrity as you say.
