Zinedine Zidane will be rewarded for his decision to end his international exile by landing the captaincy of the France national side.

Zidane retired from the international scene after a disappointing Euro 2004, and spurned several advances to return.

However, the Real Madrid veteran has finally decided to return – one month before a crunch World Cup meeting with the Republic of Ireland at Lansdowne Road, where he will be joining by fellow prodigal sons Claude Makelele and Lilian Thuram.

And Zizou will regain the captain’s armband, which Patrick Vieira had worn in the talisman’s absence over the past 12 months.

Head coach Raymond Domenech said: “It is clear, Zidane is our leader. He is the new captain. It’s the right thing to do.”
