He was only 59. Collapsed while hill walking in Scotland. He was flown to a hospital by a helicopter where he later died. I'm not sure if he still had a seat in the Commons but he was quite noteworthy for having resigned from the cabinet in protest over the Iraqi war. RIP.

It was a heart attack apparently. He was a keen walker and cyclist.

Cook was one of the few high profile people in the British Labour party who had the courage of his convictions, not just around opposition to the invasion of Iraq, but across a range of other important, but lesser known matters.
His resignation speech, printed here (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/2859431.stm), was a stirring event in British politics, and damaged Blair's standing.
His integrity shone. He has set a standard for others in public life to follow.
May he rest in peace.

He stode up for what he believed on Iraq & lost his job. Many others kep their mouths shut.
