I think the only way I can see the league cup returning is with a facelift and the first couple of round being pre season. If there was only 8 teams left by the beginning of the season it'd only mean an extra 7 fixtures that'd need to be accommodated.

Would mean that what would have been pre season games could have a bit more profile about them.

Not really IMO, mid week games with not great attendances and possible long away trips for regional and smaller clubs if they progress passed opening round or two. Not what most clubs would want with the current economic climate

the regional clubs are normally gone after those regionalised rounds anyway so your point is moot. even at that , is that not why clubs enter competitions to get these big games against loi clubs? its like sacking off the intermediate cup because the price of a bus is gone up. the way its been brushed under the carpet is something else, the cup was valuable for a lot of younger lads minutes wise. those who are maybe doing well at 19s but would struggle in a league game. people are constantly on about the need to a third tier or clubs entering b teams in amateur leagues. and yet people seem happy to see the back of the one competition where these players can get vital minutes.

Yeah but its a very different environment financially for just about every club since the last time we had the league cup, transport, accommodation and just general match day expenses have sky rocketed in the last few years. Mid week game in the competition don't draw great crowds until at least 1/4 final stage or a derby game. Same expenses as a weekend games with about 1/3 of the gate receipts

Havn't seen many clubs at any level of the country call of the return of the league cup

Makes sense, both have been a defensive shambles so plenty to work on together.

Seemed to work great, it was 0-0 apparently. Motherwell's goalless streak against LOI sides continues ;)

Three of them aren't cup forced.

Yeah, don't get the need for the change. The Sligo one moving to the Friday is strange.

Is it possible that RTE / Virgin Media want to show Sligo-Derry on the Friday night and clubs have agreed to the change to accomodate? I know TV coverage not announced as of yet but that was my thinking that they were getting things lined up.

Virgin have just announced 3 televised fixtures and Pats v Dundalk is one of them which is on the same night (22nd Sept) so it’s highly unlikely RTE would televise a game on the same night. Could be a case of Sligo needing the showgrounds on the Saturday for the women’s team maybe? I know that happened last year when pats were due to play them on a Saturday and it was moved to the Friday for that reason

No women’s fixtures that weekend unless the cup might be on. Strange one to move it.

Would Sligo fans be annoyed about that? Presumably Saturday works better for most fans.

Yeah Saturday is way better for us. See no reason at all for it to be moved.

think it moved to avoid Ireland rugby on the Saturday at same time
