Think football365 said it best when they said that being versitile does not mean playing a lot of positions and being crap in all of them

He can have as many caps as he wants it doesn't change the fact he is very average at best and not worth 3.5m. It's a panic buy as he wont add much to their side and they haven't made the transfers they should have having secured (albeit more than likely only one round of) champions league football and minimum UEFA cup football after.

Everton have wrapped up the signing of Manchester United utility man Phil Neville.

The England international has signed a five-year deal with The Toffees after the successful completion of a medical, and has been registered in time to face Villarreal in the UEFA Champions League qualifier on August 9.

An undisclosed fee has been agreed with United for the man who worked his way up the youth ranks at Old Trafford along with the likes of David Beckham, Paul Scholes and brother Gary Neville.

The 28-year-old has performed in a number of positions for Sir Alex Ferguson although Toffees boss David Moyes has already signalled his intention to utilise Neville as a holding midfielder - a position Everton have been lacking in since the sale of Thomas Gravesen to Real Madrid in January.

After finishing a remarkable fourth in The Premiership last term, Neville will bring valuable experience to a Toffees squad embarking on their maiden Champions League campaign.

After 386 appearances for The Red Devils, Neville could now make his bow in blue against the Spanish outfit next week, and has described the decision to move to Goodison as the most difficult in his career after a glory laden time with United.

"This has been the most difficult decision I have ever had to make," he told the club's official website.

"But I am excited about joining Everton and relishing my next challenge in football.

"This was a mutual decision between myself and the manager.

"I've spent 18 years of my life at the club and I would like to thank Sir Alex, all the players and the fans for their great support.

"I am now going to give the same commitment to Everton Football Club, David Moyes and the Everton fans. I can't wait for the new season to get started."

Ferguson also passed on his best wishes to the departing star, voicing his regret that he failed to find a regular place for the ever-able lieutenant in his first XI.

"This was not a decision we wanted to make, but every time I picked the team and Phil's name was not on the teamsheet, it was very difficult for me," said Ferguson.

"You couldn't meet a better professional and he leaves with the gratitude of everyone at the club for his service to United.

"I wish all the best to Phil and his family."

...for Everton after the loss of Gravesen to Real Madrid I think Phil will play a key part in Evertons campaign next season as Moyes has said he will be Evertons holding midfield player. .................A legendary United chant for P.Neville: Phil will tear you apart again :D

he ll give us cover for every position across the defence and midfield .

and any way its moyes if he thinks he is good enough then he is , also moyes is a much better manager than ferguson at getting the best out of players you just have to look at rooney he has been no where near as good as he used to be

3.5 million is not peanuts to Everton. This I read in November 2004:

Everton's debts rose to £42m in the last financial year, but the club is confident that a £12.8m investment deal will be in place by next month's annual meeting. The £4m increase in the net debt was recorded before the sale of Wayne Rooney to Manchester United. They have since paid the first of two £10m instalments while the first phase of an investment by the Fortress Sports Fund is scheduled to be completed before 7 December. The Fortress Sports Fund will pay £12.8m for an initial 29.9% stake with an option to invest a further £17.2m that would take its shareholding up to a controlling 50.1%.

.
this included the overdraft which was cleared with the first 10 mill from utd , it also included money owed to other clubs for players , this was also cleared using the money from utd .( 20 mill - 7 for beattie 13 mill off the loans )
also they had increased prize money from finishing so high in the league new sponsership deals and a new restructuring by keith wyness has left the club with a morgage style loan of 25 million with AIB . no overdraft .no money owed to other clubs and 30 million in the bank for the forth coming season

So they owe 25 million to the Bank and they have 30 million to spend. With my basic arithmetic that leaves a balance in their favour of 5 million, most of which they've blown on Phil Neville.
