Am I the only one who couldn't give a monkies about how other teams do in Europe?
Co-efficient schmoefficient I say........ People on here talk in reverential terms about the coefficient as some kind of Holy Grail that deserves respect and constant monitoring, cogitating and the like. WTF?
I'm bemused by the heartfelt abuse directed at Longford by supporters of various other clubs on here.
I'll start caring about Europe the next time Derry qualify and until then I have a passing interest at best.
Lads take a chill pill and direct your energy towards supporting your own team, rather than pouncing on one club who have had a few bad results in Europe in succession.
Have you any memories? Our recent European successes are a blip in a longer history of downright failure interspersed with highpoints of mediocrity.
If you listen to some of the crap spouted on here you'd think we were realistic contenders to win something......

The point is we're trying to progress so it wont just be a 'blip'.
It's impossible to do that with displays like tonight in Wales.

The next time Derry qualify will probably be this season and you'll be thankful for the seeding you'll get if the coefficient goes up. We all want the eL teams to do well as it'll raise the profile of the league and hopefully in turn the quality as a whole.
I'll start caring about Europe the next time Derry qualify and until then I have a passing interest at best.
So you'd happily start off unseeded in the first round, when the potential is there to start further in and be seeded, with better chances of making the higher stages? Or is that irrelevant, co-efficients are how UEFA rank the leagues and decide all this, it effects every team. Christ, god forbid, Lonford might even make it into Europe again some day!

To be honest I don't really care. Obviously an unseeded team would give us a better chance of progressing, but still have to beat whoever we play and to be honest I'm more concerned with our mediocre record in Europe than some other club's performances.
I'm no fan of Longford's but I'd leave the bitter recriminations to their fans who don't need to be told how to feel.
And as was pointed out above, we all had a chance to ensure they weren't in Europe, as the last time I checked every club was in the hat for the 2nd round draw of the cup.

Of course we back our own clubs but a healthy EL is good for us all and that defeat to the Welsh crowd won't do ANY club in the EL good.
Past defeats should be a lesson to improve and not an excuse to be content with minimal progress.
It's not always abuse - we care about clubs representing us and wish them to do well. Criticism is a vital ingredient. If/When Derry City get into Europe next season - most of us will be shouting for you guys - not too sure about the Harps fans. :D
I agree with you about all that co-efficient stuff though -I leave it up to the other Footiepersons to explain it to me- too much maths involved,

Longford do the League proud once again. :D
Vaduz, last year, Carmarthen this, who's next, a bunch of goat herders from Albania. :D
Roll on Kazakhstan. :p
They should hold their heads in shame and if they get into Europe next season I'll be sick to my stomach

First and foremost, I went into tonights games with an air of expectation. Well done Cork for starters. They went into the tie as the unseeded team and came out winners. A good achievement and I hope they get a super tie next round. (either a nice money spinner or an easy tie). Longford have shamed us as Pats did with eth 10-0 and how we did against Hibernians. This however is worse because I can safely say that Longford were 2-0 up. Part timers out of season and against a team who are suppose to be in the middle of their season. Woeful. Its actually embarrassing to go to work tomorrow and I am a shels fan.
Cork City - WELL DONE.

The closest thing Cork can get to a money spinning tie in the next round is Dundee United. :o

Its great to see UCD, Rovers and Waterford fans complaining about another teams performance in Europe given the manner in which they have set the EL on fire this season.
I'd worry about your own League performance and try qualifying for Europe first before you dish it out.
Well done Shels and Cork btw.
PS I've had approximately 4 smirks per hour today every time I think about Seltic :D

I have to say I'm quite annoyed with our display tonight.
We must have had 75% possesion, created 5 or 6 good chances, and we concede the softest goal we have conceded in about 3 seasons from a free kick that only the referee seemed to think was a free.
Kearney missed an absolute sitter, and there were at least 4 other chances that could have gone in.
The booking for George was extremely harsh, he was taken down, but it was inside the box, and the ref over reacted.
McNulty had one save to make besides the goal, and while Ekranas created a few chances, they never really threatened the goal.
I think too many City players were content to contain them and go through, while a bit of urgency on our part would have seen us get 2 or 3 goals.
We are in the draw, a "professional" performance you could call it, I suppose, but I really wish we would have pushed home our obvious superiority. Another win would have helped everyone, and we were well capable of getting it tonight.
But if we have to lose a few games 1 - 0 this season, it might as well be this one.
Seriously shocked by the Longford result. Gutted for the fans who travelled.

Oh for f u c k sake would ye all shut the hell up. Cork City have just won their 3rd european tie in 2 years and people here are talking about a terrible result. I really couldn't give a rats ass about coefficients. It's not something you can go out to do. By constantly progressing in europe we will bring up the coefficient gradually. One good year isn't gonna cahnge a load - it's based over 5 years. We're a long way from bye's or being seeded.
Picture the scenario. Team loses first leg at home 1-0 to a team with 3 internationals. Return leg, they lose their goalkeeper after 15 minutes and have to put a 41 year old in goal. Manage to draw it level and win it with the last kick of the game.
That's pretty much what City have just done. Be happy guys. There have been plenty of worse days.
And for what it's worth, City knew what they had to do today and they did it. I'm sure they could have won if they needed to, but they didn't

Ah come on how blinkered are you!!!!!! FFS O'Callaghan was an idiot to dive like that in front of the ref, who was dead right to book him. Cork without him in the next game won't be the same force at all. He let you down hugely with his stupidity.

From where I was standing, and quite a few around me as well, it looked very harsh.
I don't need some tosser from the big pub telling me how much a loss G O'C will be, or how frustrating he can be either.
Run along now and start abusing your own players, that what you w*nkers are really good at, and have a little think about the medium club's failure to get past the first round of European competition....

Man you obviously havn't a clue how this works - better coefficient - means better seeding - means easier matches - means more wins - means more money - means better players - means bigger attendences - means better league - means more european places for other clubs to avail of

I understand the maths fine thanks, so save the rolly-eyes. As is pointed out above, the statiscal relevance of focusing on one match in a combined 5 year rolling average is wasted effort.
Coefficient gives you a BETTER chance of progressing, thats about the size of it.
Its importance is blown way out of all relevance on here. As an example I give you the complaints about Cork losing a home leg and getting no coefficient points yet still going through. Who gives a monkey's?!?! The salient point is that they went through and are still in the competition.
Not to mention the last few assumptions in your list are so remote and tenuous they don't merit discussion.
The last time I checked EL attendences were flat year on year following Shels and Corks historic run last year.

Lads, we really shouldn't be arguing with each other on this - we all love and support our own clubs but we also wish our fellow clubs to do well in Europe - fcuk the maths - whether it's an away goal that counts, home win and away draw, two wins, whatever it takes.
If that's good for that co-efficient thingy, better again.
Fcuk history and past results - there is hard work being done to improve the EL - football standards, investment, facilities etc etc. That must continue.
What is most galling is to see a good lead squandered - we all wanted Longford to do well. We were upset, for the Eircom League, AND Longford fans to see such a heavy result against them.
We rant about it, NOT to abuse Longford, but because we CARE.
OneRedArmy - we'll be shouting for you guys in Europe next season too - because we care.
I think we're all on the one wavelength on this aspect.
Aren't we??? :)
The barstoolers may laugh at us but let's face it - who gives a fcuk about their BS anyway - the barstoolers are irrelevant.

I have been highly critical of Longford, but in reality, it's not the players or the fans.
The way they "play" is down to one man - Whinger Matthews.
He will probably make some statement like "Carmarthen never hurt us at all, really...."
And I do think the criticism has been way ott.
