Ventspils 0-1 Linfield (P.Thompson 8 mins)

Linfield 2-0 up on aggregate with an away goal - looks like they've a good chance of going through. Ventspils need to score three times in 60 minutes.

Half time - 1-1 good luck to the Blues even a 2-1 defeat will do.

I hope Linfield get through, and I also hope Rhyl get through - they're currently 1-1 away to Atlantas (3-2 up on agg), nearly HT.

RHYL are 2-2 now v 10 men with about 25 mins left. had led 2-1 but pulled back within 2 mins

Should be ok as 4-3 up on agg with the away goals as a saver.

Rhyl lost 3-2 but through on away goals.

Well done to them. Hopefully the last Welsh team left in Europe after tonight.

Glad both are through - like David Jeffries - seems a sound bloke. He's on Setanta a fair bit and appears to have a great knowledge and like for EL football.

I will second that - really stood out for me during the Setanta Cup. When I first seen him on the TV I was like  but he always gave good and honest interviews and he seems a very good manager.

Cheers holidaysong - how's the new pitch going? Loved Oriel Pk when we visited in my Athlone days = always thought it a spacious, clean and neat ground - don't know why people slag it off.
Anyway, any club with a Gannon in charge is aok with me. :D
BTW - since this is a European ties thread - won't Dundalk have problems if/when they qualify for Euro competitions given the hassles Dunfermline are having????

Portadown lost 1-0 and are out. I'd said there's many a Glensman won't be happy to see Linfield progress.

New pitch is progressing fine - Nice photos here: http://www.dundalkfc.com/news/_050727_OrielGallery.html All should be done for FAI cup game against Drogs on August 26th.

If we were to play in Europe I doubt we would be playing it in Oriel - we only have 1000 seats and you have to have all seating for European games. When we were in UEFA cup when we won the FAI cup in 2002 we played in Tolka Park.

I'm typing this just from the South Belfast cyber cafe, located next to the bar where Northern Ireland and Linfield fans gather... I may hop in to wish them congrats on their victory.

I am living here not far from Windsor Park ; I'll probably go to their next European game, just to catch the atmosphere. And without being a Linfield fan, to support them in their European game.

Congratulations to the scum, sorry, Linfield :D I won't wish them luck, that is a step too far however.

I just wish all Northern Ireland teams well, so that I can see some decent games here :D

Ports going out is bearable, it was against a Norwegian side. Even though as a Rosenborg fan, I am supposed to hate potential championshipcrown-robbers such as the Stavanger scum

Thanks man - forgot about the seating rule and the Tolka game.

Overall its been a good night for Ireland and Welsh teams in europe expect Longford and Ports. I'm glad Rhyl got though. I'm not too fond of Linfield but its good that they won overall too. I'd love to see us get Dundee United in the next round.

It's a historic moment that will be recognised as ground-breaking by future generations.

Yes, Linfield have won a UEFA cup tie.

Though the thought of hordes of Glenmen gurning into their beer as they pretend to be annoyed by the IL's coefficient improving, is even more amusing eh?
