Without reading the quotes or replies, would you like to guess how "enthusiastic" developers are about the changes?

I'm joined by Mark Kennedy of Hawkeye Sidekick and Philip Flanagan of The Bottomless Pit of Football to review the notable transfers and loans for Irish players in the January 2023 transfer window, following the group draw, we look ahead to the 2025 UEFA Under 21 Championship qualifying campaign, and after Vera Pauw names her first squad in the World Cup year, we wonder who, of the new call ups, is most likely to make the final squad in July?

I'm guessing probably not an all-time record or anything, but the 10 Irish players that featured in the Derby v Cheltenham game tonight must be the highest in an English league game for a while.

It's the most Irish players to appear in one game since a Championship game between Leeds and Sunderland in September 2006!
Gary Kelly, Paul Butler, and Jonathan Douglas started for Leeds
Kenny Cunningham, Liam Miller, Graham Kavanagh, Daryl Murphy, and David Connolly started for Sunderland, and Liam Lawrence and Stephen Elliott came off the bench for the Black Cats

Looks like Wigan will be relegated, having been deducted 3 points for late payment of players. Will Keane and James McClean are out of contract this summer and could move elsewhere as free transfers, but Anthony Scully (23) has another couple of years on his contract and Jamie McGrath (25) one more.

In the third in the series of programming tutorials based on appearance data for Republic of Ireland players, I explain how to show that
1) The Ireland team against Scotland in September 2022 was the youngest to start a competitive game since a qualifier against Cyprus in November 1980
2) Stephen Kenny has given 15 players their debuts - the same number as Brian Kerr

What does the initiative announced on the podcast entail?
Well, we had discussed amongst ourselves what to do in the build up to the first appearance by the Girls In Green at this summer's FIFA Women's World Cup, and, having read of other similar initiatives to improve the quality of women's articles in certain fields (science, art, history, etc) we thought this would be an excellent opportunity for a collective effort by fans of the team to make as much information as possible available before the tournament kicks off in July. So, what does this entail?
For the next eleven weeks, we're going to ask fans to focus on a single position within the squad, read through the articles for the players in that posistion, and either correct any mistakes you notice, or add something to it. This can be as little as correcting a spolling mistake (like that one!), or adding a line about their debut to their career history, to adding their international record.
We're starting this week with the goalkeepers named by Vera Pauw in the squad to face the United States recently - Courtney Brosnan (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Courtney_Brosnan), Grace Moloney (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grace_Moloney), Megan Walsh (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megan_Walsh_(footballer)), and Sophie Whitehouse (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sophie_Whitehouse) - as well as recent callups Naoisha McAloon (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naoisha_McAloon), Katie Keane, and Eve Badana (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eve_Badana).
Read the linked articles for each player, see if you notice anything that is incorrect, or if you know anything that can be added, feel free to do so.

Been adding the appearances and goals by year table to the various player articles for the last few weeks, and found something odd. Claire O'Riordan's profile page on fai.ie says she has 17 caps, but I've found 18 games where she made an appearance.
Added them all to the "Talk" section on her wiki page here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Claire_O%27Riordan

tetsujin1979

Continuing the theme of "missing caps from player profiles", it looks like Katie McCabe's two goals against Wales in a challenge game in 2016 are not included in her profile on fai.ie
Not a big deal, but it looks like caps were awarded to her, and the rest of the squad, for those two games, so why not recognise the goals?

Also, Megan Connolly is listed with 38 caps on fai.ie but has appeared in 41 games

Oh that's interesting; I'd wondered about that.

If you aggregate them, our representation in the top two divisions has dropped significantly over time, and it's only in the last three years that there's any sort of shoots in the second tier. So probably fair to say we've fewer professional players to pick from than ever before (excluding the LoI, one of the points of which of course is to give our players a professional outlet)?

Eirambler

I think what those charts show very well is that the first part of our recovery is complete, with Championship players and goals back to the level they were consistently at from 2009 to 2019. This is good news.

The next step is to start to see a recovery in numbers in the Premier League, where I think we have now reached the absolute baseline before things start to pick up again. A few stats that I think are correct from the season just passed:

- Lowest number of EPL players/appearances ever
- Lowest number of EPL goals/goalscorers ever
- zero established EPL players under 30
- The first time ever a full round of games took place without a single Irish starter (a few caveats to that one as Coleman and Ferguson were both out injured, Bazunu had just been dropped having played most games to that point and Collins did come on as a sub in that round of games).

I think we'll start to see a gradual upturn in terms of the Premier League numbers from next season. Ferguson, Cullen and Egan should all be regulars, possibly Collins too. Doherty may well come back to the league at a mid to lower ranked team and be a regular starter there, Coleman will likely be a squad player at Everton and hopefully there will be a few more as well, there are a good few other possibles at this point. I don't think we'll ever see the numbers we saw 20 or 30 years ago, because the nature of the league has changed and a lot of Irish players that would have been solid bottom half of the table pros 15 or 20 years ago are Championship players now because of the extra money in the Premier League for international signings. But within a few years I think we'll be back to having 10 to 12 players appearances in the league most weeks, which is probably as much as we can expect for a country our size.

If we add in the 463 minutes clocked up by Ebosele and Abankwah as "Premier-League Equivalent", does that bring us over the 10,000? Also, it would give us 15 players making appearances in Big Five Leagues, which would at least match 2018/19 (Conor Noss's Bundesliga appearances in 2021/22 would bring that season to 16)

Unfortunately no, it'd be around 9700 minutes. If you include Doherty in La Liga, it's 16 players in the big five leagues.

After the discussion in our previous episode on what a draw would mean for our qualification hopes, not to mind Stephen Kenny's time in charge of the national side, what does the result in Athens mean for the manager, and did the response against Gibraltar change anything?

We discuss the final 23 players, as well as those who missed out, after Vera Pauw had to make the most difficult decisions of her career when selecting the squad for the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup - the countdown to Australia is almost complete!

Parrott
Fraser
and some may get removed
Arter
Hendrick
Rea etc
