Two moments of skill from perhaps the best attacker on the pitch, Phoenix Patterson, gave Waterford the three points in Ferrycarrig tonight, but overall there were lots of periods in the game where the quality wasn’t the best from both teams. Wexford seemed to change their shape from the usual 3-5-2 to 4-4-2 and went with Alex, Paul, Joe, Lorcan, Conor B, Conor C, Dobbsy, Len, Adam, Harry and Jack. Within three minutes, Jack Doherty nearly got through on goal for Wexford but, on nine minutes, Patterson was allowed to drift inside from the left wing into a central position with the ball on his right, and his shot tucked inside the Wexford right-hand post gave Alex Moody no chance. The rest of the first half wasn’t great with Wexford’s front two, Jack and Dobbsy, looking isolated and Waterford mostly content to hit the ball long. A Waterford free which drifted a yard or two wide of the Wexford far post and a couple of Wexford corners which were well-defended by the Blues defence proved to be as near as anyone got to adding to the scoreboard. Wexford’s Conor Barry seemed to be a bit unlucky not to get a peno when he was kicked by a Waterford defender inside the Waterford box with a definite sound of boot on boot but nothing was given. 1-0 to Waterford at half-time.
