Would have to be Bohs win in Aberdeen as it enabled them to win the tie.

City's win in Malmo was pretty good as well though, as their late goal in the first leg must have given them a lot of hope but we held out well and got the killer goal in the second half.
Couldn't believe they went on to win the Swedish league last year when they looked so ordinary against City.

What part of "away result" confuses you?

We were away!
The game was played in Musgrave Park. :D

UCD is DEFINATELY worth a mention.
Firstly Everton DID win the UEFA cup that year and 2 First Division titles, with essentially the same team, is the following years. Imagine just for a second, any EL team now running Chelski, ManUre this close.

And you forgot to mention the key bit. Hanrahan was clean through in injury time and how he didn't beat Southall, nobody will know. The entire Everton team couldn't believe the ball didn't hit the net. Sheedy, was a *****, in the game. This would have sent UCD through on away goals. (by the way the UCD story of how they beat Rovers to win the cup is great)

Speaking of great results, where the team didn't win - surely Bohs' away to Rangers would have to feature. Leading 3-2 from the first leg, they held out at Ibrox until the 84th minute. I listened to Philip Greene's radio commentary - remember it well (don't know how Phil survived).

Thanks for reminding me... but here's one for Sir Hamish
UEFA Cup 2nd Round 2nd Leg
AC Milan 3 Athlone Town 0. The Midlanders held on till 60 minutes at the San Siro before conceding their first goal. Add that to the fact that the Mighty Rossaneri were held to 0-0, in the First Leg in Athlone and Jonathan Minnock's Dad missed a penalty for Athlone and it was quite a remarkable achievement. I listened to the second leg of the tie on the radio.

Imagine any EL team today holding a Serie A team scoreless for 2hours and 30 minutes and you see what a monumental performance it was.

Honourable defeats don't count as results folks. Need to win or draw.
Every game produces an outcome= a result... and least awful results also can be included among the best ones.

because let's face facts there have been some absolutely dire results for el/LOI teams in Europe over the years especially away....

Celebrating a 0-0 stinks of minnowism

Yeah but not quite as much as celebrating the anniversary of going out to rangers. One leg results don't count for anything espically before co-efficents.

I don't think that anyone celebrates going out to Rangers, they celebrate the 3-2 game. I rarely hear mentions of the game now, and it means nothing to me anyway. To compare celebtrating a victory to a 0-0 draw is ridiculous anyway. Sure didn't Shels get hammered in the next tie anyway? (Did Bohs against Rangers? No)

Irrelevent. You're celebrating one leg or a two legged tie you lost, that smacks of minnowism. You obviously missed the 20th anniversary celebrations. The next leg was 3-0 v 2-0 and in all honesty there's a wee difference between the SPL and La Liga, but that's not the point.

Ok let's get some context here.

For many of us who were in Dalymount Park in Sept 1984, the 3-2 win over Rangers represents a football utopia moment (and for me, I was also at Liam's debut in 74, Ray's Stuttgart in 88, Dave's penalty in 90 - so the company is good).

The reason is that AT THE TIME, playing a British club was exciting. They were supposed to be much better than us. In the 80's football of terracing, and crowd rushing, any football game was very different to what it is now.

The night before the game, I'd travelled back from London, via the Liverpool ferry with a load of Rangers supporters. The shopping centre end was reasonably full - many travelled down by bus from Belfast. The atmosphere was tense. There was violence before and after the game. Back then, all this was fun - it was like "real" footy from match of the day.

Rangers scored early and The Shed expected the worst, but the team delivered. The Shed sang in glory. The Gardai even battered the boys in blue at the other end (and The Shed echoed, "Gardai, Gardai").

Indeed, Bohs 3-2 '84, may not be great to you in your Shelbourne, johnny come lately, wannabee euro stars, tolka is our home [sic] teenage bubble. But it was bloody good to me. So if I and others want to cherish the memory of a great night of a great football club, then we will.

Our team - Bohemian FC - is not just a club, it's a way of life. You either get that or you don't (and if you don't you're welcome chez Tolka).

From that we can conclude that the 70's were a good time for Irish football, away in Europe.
The 80's were rubbish, the 90's were non-existant and the 00's are set to be our most successful decade ever.
The good auld days are the here and now. :D

Already are, in fact. Seven away wins half way through compared to five in the entire 70s. Maybe not the best way to compare decades, but still!

There have been alot of impressive results in Europe by different teams in differnet circumstances.

Cork beating Malmo is a top pick. Going there and emerging victorious. brilliant. I'd also think Cork beatin NEC Nimjengen (or whatever) was a good notch for the league.

Bohs beating Aberdeen - there was such euphoria and excitement surrounding this one and was a brilliant game at home.

Bohs beating Kaiser away from home - although the tie was dead it was still a magnificent acheivement to win in Germany.

Shel's losing 5-3 to Rangers was tragic. I remember watching that one and thinking how did they lose that game. If it wasnt for the speed of Albertz peno (straight after shels 3rd) then shels would have recorded the greatest win in europe.

Shel's drawing at home with Deportivo in front of 20k ppl. If Jason Byrne wasnt so nervous, he'd have scored two goals.

Athlone Drawing with the Mighty AC Milan in St Mels. Along time ago but what a result !

UCD losing only 1-nil over two legs to Everton in cup winners cup and everton went on to win it.

and now for some bias :D

Sligo Rovers beating Floriana (ok from malta but significant for the club) 3-2 over two legs.

Sligo Rovers drawing with Nantes in the interto cup. Nantes had lost to juventus in the semi- final of the champs league just a few short months before hand. Also drew with dutch side Hereveen in the same comp.

Not a win or draw but Losing 5-2 on aggregate to Brugge in cup winners cup. Brugge fans gave Rovers a standing ovation for their performance in Belgium. They was 9k in the showgrounds for the home leg. Brilliant stuff for us.

As i said, loads of results to choose from, but those one's spring to mind

Tie wasn't dead and buried. Bohs lost by one goal on aggregate, that is all, and the team had a goal disallowed and several great chances to score over there too.
serioulsy get over that kaiserslautern result. the tie WAS over. sure you would have had to win 3-0 ffs!

Even if they did get that extra goal they would still have gone out on away goals, so they managed a 0-1 when they needed a 0-3 score, not that great a result now is it?

Think we lost that one actually. A dodgy peno last min ment we lsot 2 1. lost 5 1 away in Madrid where u can see top class photos of that night in a few bars around limerick. The closest i think we came was 1 1 at home to AZ67 ALKMAAR and losing 1 0 with a late goal away. Think this was 1979 but i stand to be corrected on that. GSPAIN can we have the full Limerick list please and ill give a funny tale about my visit to the center circle in alkmaar two years ago...revenge for the battered limerick fans :D
