Gilsenen and McCormack both injured. No John Joe patrick Finn. Ferguson and O’Neill with the 21s.
Sean Roughan, Sinclair Armstrong and David Okagbue back. 21s’ Rose, Lawal, Moran all involved.
Sam Curtis and Kevin Zefi moved up from 17s to 19s...
Think back to the age group at 17s, the main names missing are probably Leigh Kavanagh (Brighton), Gavin Liam O’Brien (Bohs). There was also Colin Conroy (Bohs), kyle Conway (Pats) and Cian Kelly Caprani (Derby - still u18) was moved up at some point too...

Finn Benoa the biggest omission from the squad, but it's good to see Lawal named in midfield as hope that's where he'll play long term for us. We're kinda stacked as is with young talented CBs and could need someone with his presence as a midfielder.
Also Jack Henry Francis seems to be highly thought of at Arsenal so gonna be interesting to see how he gets on over the three games and whether he'll go straight into the XI after coming back from injury and the others all played last month.
Looking at the forward options could see us playing more 4-2-3-1 than a 4-3-3. Is a tough group and could see Lawal and someone else playing in a midfield two with the likes of Moran or Zefi as the attacking midfielder.

I’d guess: it’ll be Rose in goal.
Anselmo and one of Okagbue or Roughan at centre back. Tayo at left back. Maybe Abankwah at right back.
A midfield of Lawal, Caffrey and Francis-Henry.
Moran on the left. Could be any of Emakhu, Armstrong or Kenny up top. I’ll go with Emakhu. Right wing, Zefi can play there and may well. Don’t remember seeing Hayes play, otherwise one of the strikers... Also noticed Cristiano Fitzgerald is missing who was likely to start on the wing... Interesting to see if Ollie O'Neill is used by the 21s, personally would rather he was with the 19s

I saw that squad announced, and while I don't follow the transition from age-group to age-group very well at times, my first reaction is that this is a serious group of underage players for us. There are probably 10 household names in that squad in Rose, McNulty, Roughan, Henry-Francis, Lawal, Armstrong, Emakhu, Zefi, Moran & Kenny. It's nice to see us stacked in the forward positions for a change.
I've seen Abankwah a few times, and he's very impressive. Looking forward to seeing Anselmo myself, but most of all, Lawal.
The only thing I'd say about our underage set-up (and I fully understand why they do it), is that for some groups, the 4-3-3 that they implement doesn't get the best out of certain players, so very interested to see who and how they get picked. Is it possible to get Moran, Zefi, Emakhu & Kenny into the same side?
Is it wrong to wonder why Evan Ferguson isn't picked? He hasn't impressed at 21s despite killing it at PL 23s.

You'd hope that would be the case with that team. The back four have all been exposed to a good level of under 23 or senior football already. Don't know much or haven't seen much of McJannet and Henry- Francis but the forwards are another line of lads playing to under 23 and senior football.
If you look at the profile of that starting side and ignored their ages, it wouldn't be far off resembling some of our under 21 squads during the dark days. Armstrong in the national league (a goal in his first two games), Kenny scoring in the LOI and Andrew Moran playing for a Premiership under 23 side with a touch of senior exposure. I bet that's comparable to some of King's sides. Actually, I've rooted out an example: https://www.fai.ie/ireland/news/ireland-u21-king-selects-18-man-squad-for-double-header
That front 3 would be better than one comprising of Quigley, Greego-Cox and Hale. And none of that trio came through the FAI's system at club level. Sligo and Shamrock Rovers and Bray Wanderers have been critical to Kenny, Armstrong and Moran in their development.
Mad.

Finishes 3-2. Raft of subs in the last 5 mins, dunno if that caused issues for us.
Avoid defeat to Bosnia next day, and we're probably through. Best just to go and beat them.
The win was the most important thing today but conceding those 2 late goals could come back to cost a seeding place when it come to the draw for the next round. 9 points might be all we need to qualify as a top seed.
Pity about the two goals at the end as it could come down to goal difference to get a good seeding in the elite round if we get there. Especially after the way we dominated the game up until that point.
Finished two nil to Bosnia and Bulgaria had a man sent off before half time when 1-0 down.

A few groups have already played and only one team has 9 points so 9 points should see us get top seed.

2-0 Ireland. Great strength by Armstrong to shrug off a Bulgarian defender and slip the ball through to an Irish player who slammed a great effort into the top of the net from a tight angle on the left. Not sure if it was Moran or Roughan.
EDIT It was Roughan. Great finish. Armstrong slightly over hit the ball he slipped off. He's a lovely player Armstrong. He's strong but he has a lovely pair of feet to go with it.

Well done to them. Its not the strongest age group we have had recently and certainly missing mccormack, o neill and ferguson takes away 3 of the most important players.
Louie Barry and riley from man city were in this group at 16s so when they left us it also leaves a bit of a hole as other players would have missed out possibly in development opportunities.
Kavanagh will add firepower to this squad as o imagine he missed out this time as he has just returned from long injury lay off.
Looks like those last minute goals in the first game have come back to bite us a certain amount. If the goal difference was even just one better we would have been in pot B instead of pot C where we've ended up.

Real composure and slickness. He appears to be playing centrally up front rather than a winger, perhaps that’s how Inter see him? Hopefully he will progress to their u19 team in January, this level seems all too easy for him

That third goal....the awareness to dink the ball coming down his right side over the defender coming in from his left....quality.

Unusual squad. Contains only 5/20 players from the first round. So missing 15 players + the 2 who were with the 21s + some promising international players (Fitzgerald, Gilsenen, Mooney, Calum Kavanagh etc etc) and some promising home based players (O’Kane, Keeley, Cian Kavanagh) - I’m sure there are loads more - they were just the first names that came to mind… Presumably it’s not all by choice, possibly there’ll be a home-based squad coming soon like last year.
Nonetheless, for varying reasons, great to see Finn, Nzingo, Ibrahim, Caprani and Gregan involved.

Training camp would be for coaches to view players on the fringes. LOI is starting soon so some lads would be unavailable as involved in pre season. Gilsenen did his ACL back in October, and Fionn Mooney is still an English player so not eligible to play competitively and probably has shown no interest in switching atm.
Hopefully that means Harry Vaughan's passport is sorted now as that's what prevented him from playing in Novembers games. Also being outside of a international window clubs don't have to release players. Probably why Harrogate wouldn't release Kavanagh if they were asked incase he got injured.

Yeah I wouldn't read too much into the squad. It's only players who are allowed by their club to go. Probably rules out all the prominent PL2 players and ones who are around the first team.
The squad for the qualifiers will look very different.

Do England usually broadcast their U19 games? Wouldn't be confident in the FAI doing it but would be brilliant for this to be on TV.
Squad will be interesting. Will definitely be lighter than it could be with lads being promoted up the ranks.
They might stream them on their YouTube channel.

The Under 19s are on a hiding to nothing in terms of qualification - the damage was done in the first group stage on the score. I think these games need to be used to see which players will be best suited to stepping up to our next Under 21 squad next year.

I agree with the bold part. They should have been top seeds. But there's no need to throw the baby out with the bath water here. Ev Ferguson could easily play with this group. They're a decent side, and with england first up anything could happen - I don't expect it will, but it absolutely could.
also, lets give a bit of credit to the FA here. They've put the qualification stage into 4 great grounds - unlike a lot of what we see at this level.
Chesterfield, Bescott and the new york stadium are all class, while Georges Park is a fine pitch and venue for a game with zero local interest

Looking at the current U21s squad you have Festy, Ollie O'Neill, Odubeko, and Ferguson as being underage for the next campaign.
A couple of the U19s have been in a few squads and gotten one or two caps already like Andy Moran and Bosun Lawal. Roughan and Garcia McNulty have been in squads but not capped yet at U21s.
Hodge, Okoflex, and Burns are probably the stand out names in the U20s recently named with Okoflex having obviously been in a few U21s squads.

He's listed as a Stade Reims player in the linked article
Really up against in that group, Portugal are top seeds, England are hosting, and only the group winners go through
Trying not to look at the squad and focus on the names that aren't there, but Calum Kavanagh's omission is strange.
Benoa misses out again, and no Zefi either
<EDIT>
Zefi named in the U17 squad
Wasn't Ollie O'Neill called up to the U21s last week, or do we have two Ollie O'Neills. No Calum Kavanagh which is a shame unless they meant to name him and named Ollie O'Neill by mistake.
Forgot the 19s will be in England for the week. 21s will probably be with the 19s for the next few days and fly out after they play Portugal on Saturday.

Interesting calls: few of these could be explained by injuries that I’m unaware of
1/ Josh Keeley ahead of Arlo Doherty.
2/ Sean Grehan ahead of David Okahbue or Josh O’Brien
3/ Alex Murphy ahead of Val Adedokun
4) In terms of midfielders, missing names would include: John Joe Patrick Finn, Ola Ibrahim, Ben McCormack - I’d personally have them ahead of Corbally. Haven’t seen Baba Adeeko play.
5) In terms of attacking players, no Calum Kavanagh, Lee Harkin, Cristiano Fitzgerald, Ryan O’Kane, Aido Emakhu or Cian Kavanagh - I think I’d probably have one or two of them in the squad.
6) Unusual that Ollie O’Neill has been called up to both squads. I could see the logic in playing him against England and Portugal and then sending him to be on the bench for the 21s game - but if you’re game to do that, then Evan Ferguson is an obvious contender to do it. If you don’t get results in the first two games, the Armenia game doesn’t matter and to be honest, we should be able to win against Armenia without both of them anyway.
7) Interesting the number of 2004 players involved: Abankwah, Grehan, Murphy, McJannet, Nzingo - quite a high number really, considering the depth of players from 2003.
