Well, today is decision day.
London
Madrid
Moscow
New York
Paris
All await the news on the host venue selected for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games.
I couldn't care less about the games themselves but I would love to see London win for a number of reasons.
Why not London?
Massive investment in infrastructure means plenty work for the Irish over here and many Irish will come over for work.
Ireland is a prime location for training camps in the build up to the games.
We (my company) will hopefully win some contracts out of it.
The people of England deserve it.
Good luck to the London bid.
I'd prefer the French to win it, purely because I will (should) be able go to either London or Paris if they stage it to see some of the games, but I think Paris is just a far nicer city, and so would prefer it for that reason.

I've worked in both and have to say, London has more to offer.
Paris has some nice historical areas towards the centre but it's just like any other major European city when you start to move away from those areas.

Haivng always lived here I would love for London to get the games, because of the redevelopment, the business, the jobs, being able to see them first hand.
From a work point of view, I hope we get them as I will have guaranteed huge amounts of work for the next 6 years :o
Come on London :)

nobody in england wants it though apart from london, and it wont affect most of those an hour outside of london.
however i agree with teh second posters post.

I don't believe that for one minute!
If they don't like it now they'll be all on the bandwagon by the time it happens.
There is a sense of defeatism in England where many people are knocking the idea of hosting the games because they feel they can't compete with Paris, Madrid and New York.
Hard to believe this is country is part of a kingdom which once ruled most of the world.
it wont affect most of those an hour outside of london.
Try telling that to all the builders from the North East who are working on Wembley. They'll all want to work on the Olympic village too.

hoping London wins it too, for the extra employment for thousands.... random question though. all the news reports on tv pronounce 2012 as 'twenty twelve'. Is it not 'two thousand and twelve'?

no because london, and the rest of england are like two different places, pa just go a couple of hours outside london and you will find this, most feel that it wont affect them at all and they wont benefit, they also feel that those in london are ramming it down their throats to support the bid, and also that they are spin doctoring saying the whole country wants it. do you not remember the thing about birmingham?

see its americanised, cos dumbo americans dont like to make things any harder than they are, hence dropping o's from most peopls irish names, so names becoming neal, instead of oneil etc.
its just americanisation, thats why they drop the "and"

Everyone drops the 'and' in the middle of years to be honest POS - not just the yanks.
Sounds daft otherwise and reminds me of me da's aul fella : "T'was back in Ninety and Eighty Seven..." :)

I've lived between the West Midlands and the North West for over 2 years so I know that there's a huge divide. You just have to listen to Macy to know that. ;) Luton airport is probably the furthest you've been north of London. :p
Manchester saw a massive inward investment as a result of the Commonwealth Games in 2002 so it would be very ignorant of them to begrudge London the 2012 Olympic Games.
Just to keep things in perspective, there's a huge divide between Parisians and the rest of the French and we all know how Irish people feel about the Dubs, so the north south divide in England isn't anything which should be given too much notice.
I couldn't care less what City gets it but at least the media hype will be over - Sky News have gone overdrive on Olympics bid for months now.
The city that wins it will the one that gave the best bribes. You only to look at idiot that represents the Olympic Council of Ireland & hes probably one the better ones internationally.

I agree completely. There is work to be had for everyone, all over the country if London get this. Any compnay throughtout the country that could be involved in the process of getting the capital ready for the games will benefit.
Whats good for London will be good for the rest of the country. Admittedly a few people will disagree, but if London get it, that will change pretty sharpish  .

How much will your taxes rise to pay for? How much will UK people be willing to pay for Olympics.

But counter that with the thousands of jobs this will generate, the improved facillities available to all, the re-development of ****e areas which have up untill now been left to rott. The investment into improving public transport dur to the para olympics - Its a disgrace that many cant use the underground or other aspects of public transport . Its about the bigger picture for me, and many others.
Oh and with regards to the taxes, I have no idea how much I pay now (only been paying it for a year ;) , so a bit more probably wont make too much of a difference :D, especially given that the olympics should hopefully make me money anyway

Dame Kelly Holmes, double Olympic champion, Trafalgar Square
I'm very nervous and feel quite sick. Whatever happens we've put in a brilliant bid and have done ourselves proud. The support here is absolutely marvellous. If we get the Games it would change the whole of Great Britain and leave an excellent legacy. The Olympic movement and spirit stays with you for life and it would change everyone's perceptions on sport.
Just seconds to go now...

I reckon Becks saying that "I'll`be furtee-sevon when dey comes around, and I''ll come outa retoirement to play on my manor....innit" was what really won it for them.... :D

but joe, how does it make any difference to us as a nation having it "on our doorstep", why did the french bother bidding then? Is that going to be consolation for them, ah well sure we have the olympics on our doorstep, actually we have it a 4/5 closer than ireland, thats even better.... ;)

When I read about all the training camps in Cyprus before the games in Athens, it got me thinking that the likes of UL, the Mardyke in Cork and Morton Stadium in Santry are ideal locations for such camps before the games in London. If we are clever enough, we can make London work well in our favour.

england i would assume has better training facilities and resources than greece surely, and by then certainly will have in place, as the other major cities jump on the bandwagon and start wanting their piece.

The thing that fecks me off about London winning the Olympics is that it has to take something major like that to get the government to grow any balls and spend some sorely needed money on the city's infrastructure.
What is it with the English/English government that they're pretrified of spending any public money, and will only do so if they can dress it up/hide it behind some big wonder spectacle like the Olympics (Cross rail, East London line extension, redevelopment of Stratford) the Millenium (Jubilee Line extension, redevelopment of North Charlton), Commonwealth Games (redevelopment of East Manchester) etc ?
I blame the Thatcher years. Convinced everyone that the State could only ever feck things up, so shouldn't be allowed to spend any money, and that the money not spent in this should be given out 6to individuals instead in tax cuts. Sick.....
I wish London hadn't got the Olympics - not out of disinterest or petty Oirish rivalry, but because it would then highlight the fact that the government here are too scared of spending money where it's needed.
P.S. Buy yourself a house in Stratford quickly....

Peader - a lot of that would've been acclimitisation by the numerous countries around the world who can afford such luxuries and aren't used to the stifling Summer heat of Athens. The only really wealthy nations in the world with hot weather are Australia and Japan (the likes of South Africa & Brazil aren't particularly wealthy; the likes of the US, Canada and New Zealand aren't warm nations overall). The rest had the money and the will to acclimatise back in 2004.
London will be the reverse of that - why would anyone from the US, Canada, Germany etc need or want to come to Ireland in advance of the games ? It's just more flying and hassle for the athletes, and more expense for the sports authorities concerened, with no clear benefit. A small number may want to come to somewhere to break up their very long flights (Aus, NZ and Japan, for example) and settle-in away from the hub-bub, but why would they more likely to do that in Ireland than, say the Home Counties, the West Country, or even Scotland/Wales ? Or even Northern France near the Eurostar ?

Would manchester and their facillities not benefit, given they had the commonwealth games. ITs all good, plenty of work to be had now. :D
I wonder how much the bribes went for this year... IOC is as corrupt a world organisation that you could hope to find.
I think the UK/London will have problems with infrastructure delays. IMO Paris would be quicker as French are used to spending public money on state projects.

yes they should, as should birmingham and sheffield, who also held the student games.
i think for the likes of sheffield its great news, as im sure most teams would like to stay outside of london for the preparations before the games commence.
northern france will benefit more than ireland imo, i mean the eurostar straight into the city, eurostart directly to brussels as well, where many teams can fly directly into, then stay around northern france and still be as little as a couple of hours from london, without the hub bub described earlier.

It's up to us to market ourselves to them and make Ireland an attractive base, away from the din in the build up to the games.

there seems to have been a touch of the 'fai's in the voting:
from bbc.co.uk:
First round
London 22
Paris 21
Madrid 20
New York 19
Moscow 15 (eliminated)
Second round
Madrid 32
London 27
Paris 25
New York 16 (eliminated)
Third round
London 39
Paris 33
Madrid 31 (eliminated)
Fourth round
London 54
Paris 50 (eliminated)
madrid get 32 votes when there was four options in the second round, and then 31 votes when there was three options in the third round

ok how do you propose this over the likes of france? taking into account demographics, geography, infasrtucture and economics?
geographic - far closer about 4/5ths.
infrastrucutre, planes, trains, boats, buses over in again 4/5ths of the time from ireland.
economics, which do you think is far cheaper????
