Steve Staunton has hit back at Coventry City’s revelations that his contract offer was withdrawn after he failed to show up for the start of pre-season training last Friday.

Staunton was criticised by boss Mickey Adams, who withdrew the offer of a new one-year deal for the Dundalk native on Monday.

But Stan, who holds the Irish appearances record with 103 caps, insists he had no obligation to turn up for the start of pre-season training – as he had already turned down the offer of a new deal at the Ricoh Arena.

He said: “Coventry’s offer of a new deal was rejected by me as it did not match my requirements and was less than last year’s deal.

“The club had yet to come back with a new deal although I was more than happy to listen to another offer.

“I was not under contract with Coventry last Friday so I was not due to report for the start of pre-season training.”
