Coca-Cola Championship side Coventry City have withdrawn their offer of a new contract to Steve Staunton after the veteran Irish defender failed to show up for the beginning of pre-season training last week.
Staunton was out of contract at the end of last season and had delayed making a decision on whether to sign the new deal.
And Sky Blues boss Mickey Adams has decided to withdraw his offer of a new one-year deal in the light of Stan’s failure to check in for the start of summer work.
Adams said: “The offer has been withdrawn so he won’t be coming back. I spoke to him this morning and I wish him well wherever he goes.
"I am disappointed because I genuinely thought he played well for me in the centre half position at the end of last season. But there has to come a time when enough is enough.
"He’s had two months to sort out his future and contract from when I first spoke to him in early May and now I’ve had to make a decision which is that I will use the money freed up by his wages to bring in a younger centre half.
"He’s a great lad and I’ve got no problem with him because he’s been a magnificent pro since I have been here at the club, but I have had to make a decision because Stan didn’t show, for whatever reasons and I have started negotiating else where with a defender and I am not prepared to back down on that.”
