This is why Ronaldo is the best of his generation, arguably. He was rubbish for 88 minutes, and scores two goals to rescue the team.

We're back to "positives", but this is a devastating last minute reverse and it's going to gut those players for the next few games.

Don't want to hear whinging about the injury time either, there was a pause for a VAR check and he was hardly going to blow with Portugal on the ball next to the Irish box.

Disgusting performance from the officials - terrific performance from Ireland. Shouldnt be hard to motivate the players for the next 2

i feel bad for them because they played very well but it's yet another loss. when is the last time we lost the first three games in a qualifying group? maybe it's never happened.

**** off ref
It was the peno referral.

That's sickening. We were second best in that, but **** me, the application tonight was something we hadn't seen in ages. There's negatives from tonight too but they're not worth going into right now. This was the most worried I was going into a game in years, but there's suddenly more positives to take out of a game in a while.

Let's see how the Azeri game goes now. That was always the key of the three. They lost to Luxembourg tonight; we need to build on this

paul_oshea
01/09/2021, 8:48 PM
The reality is we had 30% possession we looked like scoring when we countered them but we sat in and hope to defend and well everyone knows what Ronaldo can do.

The performance means nothing if they don't get 6 points from the next two regardless.

Idah was very good tonight most of the players were. Surely someone should have learnt to man mark Ronaldo in the box after the first one

Sorry, but you make your own luck in this game. Kenny as a manager is just not convincing on the sidelines.
Doherty was gone from about 60 mins but nothing was done. Hendrick did little or nothing. No idea why McCLean was brought on. He is finished.
Team played really by the way and did not deserve to lose.

His subs were poor I think and seemed too late.

Ah Christ, I don't know. I shouldn't be, but I'm furious. I feel like I did after the draw with Sweden in 2016. We defended so well for 88 minutes and two mistakes and it all goes up in a puff of smoke. The World Cup campaign was alive again! Now it's deader than ever.

The look he gave Ronaldo there after the FT whistle went was like a kid getting an autograph. A mix of delight and desperation for approval.

Heartbreaking result but a quality team performance. Outdone by two quality headers from one of the best players ever to grace the game & a fairly biased ref that seemed to give Portugal everything and Ireland very little

What a pity , correction what a wasted opportunity … once he brought McClean on there was only one outcome and true to form he screwed up by not stopping the cross for first goal and then screwing up a great chance….. as for Kenny I suspect he’ll keep his job to the end of this campaign…. However a few more defeats to the likes of Luxembourg then he’ll have to go

la FAI tiene que hacer una queja formal de todo este escándalo...jugaron como si fueramos los sparrings de los glober trotters con los arbitros encima en contra de nosotros... very sad. Kenny had 5 substitutions to make, very late very very late.... Arter was there to play. old heads

pero cuando el cambio es mcclean...

esta bien pero McClean no estuvo mal. Para mi era Molumby y Arter por Hendrick y McGrath at 80 minutes or so. anyway the ref was a crook . fai must take some suits there to make a complaint....the treating of Connolly from the ref....the yellow on him was to restrict him in those one on one....the ref was a crook but my question to all you....is .....Is the FAI gonna do something about it ?? because the way the ref acted today was very very prominent

Did Kenny stumble upon or forced into his best formation? Still not sure if he's learning or not, and his subs were very poor.

Lads looking for hope and what not used possession as a stick to defend Kenny with and to beat those opposed to the game plan and implementation we'd seen at the start of his reign. We had 30% possession backs to the wall stuff for most of the second half. Our best bet of winning was when we broke and countered them. The moral victory and self pity and loathing has occured many times under other managers in the past, we lost 2-1 defended resolutely for 35 plus mins of the end of the game, we've seen it before.

That being said some of the young lads looked good.

Nio, we were up against 12 players today. we played the game we had after the lead. Kenny took the subs late very late, but for me the referee is the main antagonist of this game, fai should complaint about it

i don't want to hear SK banging on about how good we were. another loss.

On yer bike. It was a really good performance, deserved at least a point. Some on here we’re talking about a 6/7 goal defeat, the more optimistic we’re going for 3-0. So now suddenly the performance doesn’t matter, just the result. Despite the fact it was a game absolutely no-one thought we could win.

Bielsa´s irish
01/09/2021, 9:07 PM
of course we could have done it better, but again, we were playing the game after the lead we needed the yellow on Connolly was very significant that something was cooking
