Grammy-winning soul singer and songwriter Luther Vandross has died at the age of 54.

The singer suffered a serious stroke two years ago as he was about to relaunch his career.

He died on Friday in a New Jersey hospital, officials said.

Rob Cavanaugh, a spokesman at JFK Medical Centre in Edison, New Jersey said: "Luther Vandross had a peaceful passing under the watchful eye of friends, family and the medical support team."

Vandross was considered the premier soul balladeer of his generation, with a silky voice that seduced millions of fans and won over collaborators such as David Bowie and Aretha Franklin.

Not my style at all but can see the guy was well on top of his game.

Very sad for a man of 54.

RIP Luther.
