Why are they starting the mid season beak with 2 games to go before mid season and ending it the same night the Euros start?

Well it is the FAI, don't you know!

Assuming that there actually is a logic behind it at all, I suspect that they try to avoid that clubs are going into European matches straight from the break. Have the break a little earlier so that they have a few matches under their belt after the break before the first round in Europe comes around.

It used to be the break was during the group games and then the league was back for a direct clash with the knock-out rounds, which also made no sense.

I think it's just the FAI being the FAI really. Or did the Euros schedule change since the LoI fixtures were drawn up?

The "break" was also stated to avoid the clash with the Euros and to give players with young kids the chance to have a summer family hoilday. (Wipes tear away at FAI`s "heartwarming" gesture)

The clubs having some games before European matches makes some sense. Having direct clashes with the Euros makes no sense at all.

That wouldn't affect the First Division though. Who presumably would be even more vulnerable if put up against the Euros (given fewer fans and lower standard). No reason why both leagues need to go on a break at the same time.
