View Full Version : Raping songs

I just was surfing around with a TV next to me put on a music station, and what do I hear... ??
DEPECHE MODE - Enjoy The Silence (Linkin Park remix)
I am gutted... One of the best songs ever written has been purely raped by some nu-metal lads... How did Martin Gore allow this happening to one of his masterpieces ? Some songs are IMO too good to be touched, a remix could never improve a song like Enjoy The Silence... Linkin Park should keep their hands off songs like that and continue in their own style.
And as if it wasn't bad enough... INDOCHINE's classic "Trois nuits par semaine" turned into a dull pop tune by a new French band... One of the biggest cult songs ever in the French language reduced to a mediocre ripp-off...
Where did music go wrong ?? If I hear this, and read that a ringtone became nr 1 in the UK, and see the dominance of very un-authentic hiphop in the charts... I guess I'm just not 'with it' anymore when it comes to music.

Marlyn Manson version of Tainted Love was not bad.
Poison by Alice Cooper was destroyed by some boyband.
Any of the Johnny Cash covers I really liked (Hurt, Personal Jesus).
William Shattner can do no wrong in my eyes covering songs :)
My pet hate is taking a class song and putting a crass beat and a filthy video with it and selling it. How do bands allow their great songs to be mauled.

have heard at least three different nu-metal attempts at The Smith's 'How Soon is Now'
Eek  They cannot be serious about that ?! This is pure crime ! When is Moz going to court again ??
Tainted Love, I actually liked Manson's version better than the original, it had more power and energy, and the video was uber-goth  But that was a rare exception. Usually covers contribute less or nothing to the song, that boyband shamelessly abusing Alice Cooper's "Poison" was an all-time low
I think personally that two type of covers are allowed: tributes (trying to do the song more or less like the original, but be very selective: chose only one or two songs from your musical heroes, if you do more covers than that it gives the looks of a cover act) and really new versions of known songs. Tori Amos' version of "Enjoy the silence" is stunning for example, but apart from the lyrics nothing was the same as the original: the instruments Depeche Mode used were all left out, it was just Tori and the piano.
With all the respect for dance culture and disco frequenters, but I do have a problem with dance bands turning classic pop or rock tunes into a cheap dance riddle. Good dance music should have its origin in dance, and not in the pop/alternative charts. In Belgium a band turned "Heaven", the one decent song from Bryan Adams, into a house song   And what really guts me is that the audience swallows it, I know a guy who never even know "School's out" was from Alice Cooper, he thought the teenagers punk band who covered it wrote it themselves !!

Bands actually don't have a say in whether their song is covered or not and have very little say in stylistic alterations unless the lyrics are being changed.
If you're putting a cover version of another artists song on your record you just buy a licence from the MCPS (Mechanical Copyright Protection Society).
If you're using a sample or are making lyrical alterations it's a bit more complicated as you have to find out who the publisher of the song is (if there is a publisher) and negotiate a percentages deal.
It is NOT a good idea to release a record with samples and then go looking to publishers and artists for clearance as you're in serious breach of copyright law and have a bargaining power of zero.
Some major artists and their publishers are loathe to clear samples as they know it'll lead to to ass-raping of valuable back catalogue and reputation. You rarely if ever hear Beatles samples on records for example -Metallica either. (pity really as -with my limited skill -I've chopped up some Metallica riffs and stuck some big beats behind 'em and they sound rockin'!!!)
As for horrible cover versions -If both the Corrs and Phil Lynott were countries at war rather than musicians -well then The Corrs pilaging of Phil Lynotts Old Town would have to be considered a heinous war crime.
The original Tainted Love was always the best - and I'm not talking about the Soft Cell cover (although theirs was the best of the remixes, with My Ruin a close second) - Gloria Jones did the original version, complete with trumpets (!!), many many many years ago! I thought Mansons version was píss poor tbfh (as were his covers of I put a Spell on You, and Rock 'n Roll ******) :(.
Generally covers tend to suck, in comparison to the orignal at least.

Alice Cooper's Poison was originally written by Jon Bon Jovi. Shocking eh :) ha
Perfect Day - Children in Need version.
There She Goes - Six Pence None The Richer.
Fairytale of New York - Roland Keating (and what makes it worse he had to get permission as he changed lyrics).

Perfect Day - Children in Need version.
I didn't mind that at all actually except for M-Peoples Heather Small caterwalling (at least she only got the one line though ;) -vulgar, vulgar vocal technique passed off as soulful) and Gabrielles injection of urban knack on "am glad ah spen-it wit eeeeeoooooooooooo"
Fairytale of New York - Roland Keating (and what makes it worse he had to get permission as he changed lyrics).
Despicable. Would've looked hamfisted in a christmas panto which is where this cnut belongs.

It was still better than Christy Moore's version, where, to give it the 'aul' Chrishty twisht he had to go and pronounce 'police' as 'pole-is', to really get the begob begorrah Oirish bit across.
Didn't mind that myself. At least he sings his songs with a bit of passion which is a lot more than you can say for that gobsh!te Keating.

These 'dance bands' that ye refer to are really just pop groups, just like boybands, girlbands. These are the ones that keep doing covers of classic pop tunes etc. Nobody, and I mean nobody who is immersed in dance music culture listens to this $hite. No dance music DJ worth his salt would be seen dead with one of these records in his hand. Dance music culture and these dance-bands aren't even related. Lets just get that straight!
Basically, this stuff is just music by numbers produced for the teeny-bopper market, just like our friend 'crazy frog', the annoying little pr!ck. I've been saying it for ages, the charts and pop music in general is just for kids these days. It's kiddy music, and anyone IMO who listens to anything that appears in the charts is devoid of musical taste (Rock bands are the exception). There is no comparison between say, the likes of Michael Jackson, George Michael, 80's Electronica etc to the crap that is produced today from the likes of Robbie Williams, Britney Spears, and all that rubbish R'n'B and Hip-Hop.
BTW, there exists an excellent dance (Trance) take on 'The Silence' which was produced in 1999 by Mike Koglin. A classic.

I seem to remember you mentioning that "poli-is" thing a few times on forums.....
I wonder is theat the most irritating thing ever to you, Conor? :D

Well said, but for the sake of artistic dignity bands should stand up against their epics being covered by those specific charts bands. I mean, it's not like Depeche Mode still need the cash coming in from a cover's sales...
They can kick and scream all they want, if they have no say over it, it won't achieve anything - other than making them look more pretentious and childish (read: artsy and proud).
