Taken from here (http://www.eleven-a-side.com) Cork spurn chances at the Cross

June 25, 2005

Cork City 0-0 Longford Town
Cork City spurned the chance to extend their lead at the top of the Premier Division to at least eight points when they were held to a scoreless draw by a brave performance from Longford Town at Turners Cross on Friday night.

The sides went into this game as the most in-form in the eircom League, unbeaten in seven (Cork) and six games respectively.

Each team had made defensive fortitude a real hallmark, so perhaps it was little surprise that neither side could find a winner here.

Cork definitely had the better of the chances, but John O’Flynn and current eircom Player of the Month George O’Callaghan – among others – were guilty of spurning them.

Longford held out, with Davy Byrne energetic in midfield and Sean Dillon, taking over as the leader of the back four in the absence of suspender skipper Barry Ferguson, in exceptional form.

Visiting keeper Stephen O’Brien, a popular figure throughout the eircom League, was rarely tested on his final appearance at Turners Cross – the 34-year-old announced this week that he was retiring from league football at the end of the season.
