i only know of one recent irish band a mate played for me, ceile(?), who seem to push the boat out with psychadelia infused into their folk music. though at times they sound a bit too much like rusted root for me, it's certainly the kind of thing i hope gets more of a foothold in modern irish music. a re-working of our native styles. not that this hasn't been done before (horslips' prog-folk was a great trip, finbar/eddie furey's "fox chase" is well the f*ck out there) and i'm admittedtly pretty clueless as to the current underbelly of folk in ireland. what's going on? anything on the fringes, under the rocks, the ghost of luke kelly wailing from the center of newgrange..? both finland and the u.s. have experienced small explorations into these areas, ireland seems THE most fertile and likely source for the next foray...
