What all Liverpool fans wanted. Pity Jimmy Aggrey wasn't going back there and we'd have a comedy show aswell as a football game to look at :D

I'm sure it'll be in the Millenium?

Great big pay day for TNS. Shels v Glentoran should be a cracker. Any word on Celtic or is their draw at a later date? Thought they were doing 1st AND 2nd qualifying rounds today?

I doubt it. Maybe Ninian Park or something.

I'd say it will be in Wrexham. Ninian Park isn't allowed host those type of matches afaik?

They moved to Oswestry (sp.), took over Oswestry Town. Formally of Llansantffraid.

Yes, they offered to put their own champions league spot up for grabs

I think they're from Total Network Solutions, a Welsh mining village where everyone is either Megan or Dafyd...

And there's probably only 1 gay in the village too I'll bet :D

Would be absolutely great if TNS would win it, the biggest stunt ever in European football probably. Unlikely to happen, but one can always dream... To quote the Levellers: "Nothing is impossible in my all powerful mind"...

VERY unlikely to happen. We'll have it wrapped up by half-time of the first leg. Have an abacus ready, to count up the rugby score. :D

There have been bigger stunts in European football, like when Bremen scored 5 in the last half-hour to beat Anderlecht 5-3 in the CL, Shels leading Rangers 3-0, Coruna winning 4-0 against Milan, or when Longford shamed the NL, by losing to Vaduz....twice!!

A Welsh minnow beating the defending champions would be a bigger stunt IMO than winning 5-3 after being 0-3 down. Shels leading 3-0 vs Rangers was not even a stunt, because we eventually lost that game :(

Vaduz vs Longford seems like one, but... Vaduz is Swiss second division and very likely to be top-flight very soon. So I don't think they're much below an Eircom League side (apart from our top sides Cork, Shels and currently Derry)

Deportivo's 4-0 vs Milan was indeed one of the biggest stunts in UEFA history, certainly after the first leg's 4-1 victory for Milan.

Admit, a Welsh side hardly anyone knows that eliminates the previous winner of the Champions League. It would be a result people still talk about within 50 years.

I hope it happens but I am realistic. If it happens I will walk to Lourdes.

And I have nothing against Liverpool, even find it a very nice club and was glad they won the CL and not the spoiled brats from Milan. But if a minnow plays a giant, I always chose side for the minnow, except if the 'giant' is Rosenborg of course :)

and total network solutions..
total network solutions fc
are the finest team the world has ever seen!

bizarre story:
shortly after hearing tns had offered to play liverpool in a champions league play-off tie, i was sitting in the pub with a couple of friends, discussing the sham of an offer and the ridiculous name of tns.generally slagging them off.anyway got home and had a shower.was about to sit down to eat my dinner when i got a phone call.. from total network solutions! the telemarketing company had just rang me out of the blue randomly to conduct a survey. what are the chances?? :D

Why the f*** would TNS be a ridiculous name ? They're named after a company from which they grew, just like many companies have a team. Why would TNS be more ridiculous than eg Celtic, Shamrock Rovers, Shelbourne, UCD ?? On the contrary, TNS FC is much more original than just naming it after the hometown, and this is actually a name foreigners can pronounce. Imagine the journalists losing their reputation over Llansantffraid FC

because naming a team after a company is taking capitalism too laughable lengths....

EDIT:I meant to also say:

this is actually a name foreigners can pronounce. Imagine
 Possibly the most ridiculous post EVER

Because they changed their name to TNS. If Shels were to change their name to JW Hire FC, I can't imagine you'd be too pleased!

PSV is an abbreviation of Philips sporting club (in Dutch obviously ;) )

The Club was bourne out of the sports clubs the company had for workers.
Granted that they're not likely to play inter-firm anymore :D , but they're strongly linked to the Phillips company.

In fairness though, that's slightly different to renaming a club after a sponsor though

For the record, my PSV point was in no way meant to defend TNS, who are sell-outs :D

To drag this even more off topic than it already is. Aren't FK Ekranas that City are playing another team named after some company or other?

The FAI/IRFU are selling the naming rights to the revamped Lansdowne Road.
Arsenal have already sold the rights to Ashburton Grove.
Llantsanffraid incorporting Oswestry Town would be the alternative name folks. I am afraid in some situations regarding football he who pays the piper calls the tune.

P.S. Budweiser offered to fully develop the stadium in UCD in return for the naming rights in the late 1980's but the UCD Authorities would not allow the ground to be renamed Budweiser Park.

While Gerrit does spout some ridiculous rubbish about national teams and 'imaginary borders', I think he has a point on this one. :D TNS is really no different to PSV Eindhoven or Bayer Leverkusen. PSV are known more as PSV than Eindhoven, the PSV basically stands for Phillips, the electronics company. The club comes from the company Phillips. Similarily Bayer is the name of the medical drugs company which Leverkusen has come from and is associated with. So PSV, or Bayer is no different to TNS really. Yeah TNS renamed a club that they bought, but who'll care about that in 50 years time? A lot of people here weren't even aware of the PSV name, I bet even more about Bayer....

Many companies have a football team on amateur level. No one cares to play them. Just look at the Leinster Senior League and observe there are teams named Dublin Bus, Garda, ...

Many companies have a team, and very occasionally the team grows professional or semi-professional. Examples are PSV, Bayer Leverkusen, I'd even say UCD is (even though it's more an institution than a company). And in the former USSR it was so common to name your club after a government department (Dinamo Moscow, Lokomotiv Moskow, CSK Army Moscow, ...). In England we have Vauxhall Motors in the league just below the Conference.

I don't really see the problem supporting a team with its roots in a company. What I do regret is Austrian teams naming themselves after their sponsors and thus changing names every x years. Austria Salzburg if officially simply Austria Salzburg, but labelled themselves first as Casino Salzburg, then Wuestenrot Salzburg, and now... Red Bull Salzburg
