A ponderous first half together with two poor concessions meant that Wexford gave themselves a mountain to climb in Ferrycarrig tonight. But they’ll take some comfort from a really good effort in the second half as they brought the game to Cobh, helped greatly by a change in formation. Wexford started with Jimmy, Dan, Alex, Paul C, James, Conor, Karl M, Jack D, Paul F, Harry and Luke. Cobh started the better and Jimmy Corcoran had to touch a long distance shot by Cobh over his own cross-bar on two minutes. Wexford’s Luke Turner then had to clear another effort by Cobh on the Wexford goal for a further corner on three minutes. On nine minutes, Cobh went ahead when a looping back-pass put Jimmy Corcoran in trouble in the Wexford goal and Jimmy lost his 50-50 tackle outside the box against Griffin of Cobh to leave the simplest of tap-ins for the Cobh forward. 1-0 to Cobh. On 25 minutes, Wexford’s only chance of the half came when Jack Doherty was sent free, but he couldn’t get his shot on target. With two minutes to go in the half, Wexford had a throw in their own third of the pitch, but gave the ball away to leave Cooper of Cobh to strike low past Corcoran and it was 2-0 to Cobh at half-time. Wexford had been knocking balls up front to Jack Doherty for most of the half and, although Jack tried manfully, it generally proved an easy task for the much bigger Cobh defenders.
