Irish poet and former RTÉ producer/director Michael Davitt has died suddenly. He was aged 55.

Mr Davitt, born in Cork in 1950, was a strong supporter of the Irish language and culture.

Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism John O'Donoghue today expressed his sorrow at the untimely death of Mr Davitt.

Didn't know who he was but obviously condolences to his family and friends. Sounds like he was a proud Irish man.

I know his daughter, she's a lovely girl. He's a great loss, part of a revolutionary group of poets from the early 70s in UCC.

A fine and considered man, one of our finest poets, in either language up until his untimely demise.

A sharp loss on our poetic landscape.
