Opposite to the other thread we've got going on here. You can name your most underarted/underpublicised artists and bands. You never know, you may introduce each other to great new music.

Mine, Rufus Wainwright...

Mine would be the Beta Band. Never got the recognition they deserved. Other would be the Boo Radleys.

Echo & The Bunnymen. by far the most underrated...

(though I must admit us Bunnymen-fans tend to like the fact that the band's still a bit of an underground/alternative thing, at the same time we sometimes like to complain about the lack of appreciation from the outside world...)

Most underrated Irish band without a doubt has to be The Blades.

Horslips!!!!!

But seriously, there's a lot of unsigned talent around at the moment, on the Dublin scene anyway, and I assume the rest of the country too, although there is also a lot of crap out there too!

I've encountered many, many plaudits from musicians of both the modern, and former era's with regards Rory.So not really underatted...i.m.h.o.

My underated bands would be:

Bad Religion.Quite possibly the only out and out punk band, that mamnaged to stick to the Californian punk sound, yet added something to it that has yet to be repeated.

Minor Threat.Spawned the whole 'abstenence/straight edge' hardcore/punk music movement.Fans include Slayer, Rage against the machine and numerous others.

There are many many more I could list, but they may be even more so obscure for this discussion.

Would agree with that except that I felt Microdisney were even more underated.
Can't believe that neither of those two bands became at least as big as U2......

'Mine would be the Beta Band. Never got the recognition they deserved.'

Saw them a few months ago in the temple bar music centre (i think it was the temple bar music centre anyway  ). F**king class gig and some weird lighting for it!! (regret not being off my tits for it now :D !!)

Would BAdly Drawn Boy be classifield as 'big' and maybe not relevant to this thread? (like he only played the village a half year to a year ago) - well if he's not highly rated ill put him into this category ;)

EDIT: Just came into my head - the most underrated band were Kerbdog - they were kick a**e and if they had've been from america they probably would've been really big

I think it's important to make the distinction between underrated and unknown, so to keep it to known acts who should be much bigger.

Underrated Irish now - The Walls
Underrated Irish past - Microdisney (edit: Toasted heretic too)

Underrated other now - Aimee Mann, Will Oldham, Tom McRae, Tom Baxter, Ron Sexsmith, Grandaddy, Modest mouse
Underrated other past - Supertramp (p1ss off, they WERE class  )

Underrated here and huge in the states - Dave Matthews band, John Mayer

Great band alright. ... But unknown?

Never said they were unknown ;)
I think people tend to underrate them because of comparison to critically acclaimed contenporaries.

Oh, the Boos :D Amazing band, definitely underrated. Everyone who doesn't know their stuff always thinks of Wake Up and thinks all their stuff like that. Toss up between Giant Steps and Everythings Allright Forever as to my favourite. Haven't listened to them for ages. Might go and stick Giant Steps on now. :)

Was looking for Giant Steps myself last night - my CD's are split between several locations at the moment, and it wasn't in the box in Wicklow. Nearest I got was Lazurus on the Rock The Dock compliation...

Its funny because I got the first album and loved it then when the second one came out I was not fully impressed but once I got over the difference its actually got some great tunes on it. The third one is a grower indeed. I love his voice and live he is brilliant. I can't praise him enough.

Add the Shins to underrated bands.

Parliament-Funkadelic and OutKast. Yeah, OutKast have done well in recent years but they had three great albums before anyone over here heard Ms. Jackson. It's far from being their best song. Or is Hey Ya.

cruacahan, most underrated, they are known world wide and have played on many foreign soils, but remain relatively unknown. anyone here ever heard of them. shane mcgowan produced one of their albums and sung on ride on.quality song.

Hmmm, not a fan of it myself, you definately miss Jimmy on drums. And a lot of the songs are about Billy's mother dying, and him losing his faith because of it.

Second album wasn't great, sounded way too overproduced.
Then they lost Hilary!
New album due "soon"
I'll probably pick it up, a mate of mine is a massive fan

Underrated other now - Aimee Mann, Will Oldham,

aimee seems treading water a bit on her latest, i wish she'd f*ck her style up a bit. but her lyrics can be superb sometimes. live she's good. billy oldham is a weird one, he seems to have his head up his own bum (re-recording his older Palace stuff with country music session musicians?) sometimes but you can't argue with his lyrics, delivery on a lot of his songs. dunno if either are underrated though? 'indie press' plaudits for both in recent years.

neil young overrated? jaysis. try 'on the beach' and 'american stars n' bars' or zuma or decade or - -there's loads. a **** period in the 80s a la bob dylan but most songwriters have a middle aged blip it seems. his poetry stands up on the page and when it doesn't, the guitar .. ! the man's a god with it. i guess his style is 'make do with what you have.'

beatles/beach boys would be my shout in this thread (and all the old r+b artists they ripped off) :D

Damien Rice and Bloc party.
What's so underrated about them. DR was on one of those poxy teen shows in the US wasn't he? Or was that someone else? Plus every bird in the country owns his stuff. Bloc Party are so 'hot right now' it makes me want to kill myself. Two of the most overrated more like.

Yep, they broke up after a few singles + one album, then reformed as Fixed Stars, and now the one-man show Pony Club.

Hmmm we're both on different tangents here -you're having a pop at video channels (not even sure if DR has ever made a video -I'd commend him if he hasn't!) while I'm having a pop at so called alternative radio here in Ireland.

Your point is valid though. Chuck into the mix that so called MTV has more lifestyle and less music than the Lifestyle Channel and the picture is even more bleak.

But heh... Frank Zappa warned us all way back in 1983 that if you order sh1t you'll eat sh1t and the world called him a dry balls for not getting with it.
