We are 8 weeks away from the squad panel of players and 10 weeks from matchday.

What we know from them is that they are changing coach, finished strong in a 5-0 victory vs Russia at home.

Main source of goals is Fulham's substitute Mitrovic (a Cascarino type of 9) and their flair player is Tadic from Ajax, their results at home are very moody.

And they won us the group when they defeated Ireland away for the wc 2018 goal from Kolarov.

How is Kenny gonna play against them?

His first match vs Serbia is gonna determine his fate, a draw is in need at least! The bring the new kids is not enough, a case of too little too soon.

Duff gone is very very strange and odd he seems a fellow of principles, a breeze of honesty in football imo.

The 7 games without scoring a goal is unacceptable, the 4-3-3 has made Ireland very predictable, sometimes in this game, just to be there is not as good as appearing by surprise, wandering around the box, and the brains to occupy the empty spaces, suddenly see a pass create a proper chance.... in the last third of the pitch.

He is good at getting into the box for a goal but I wouldnt say hes a creative 10

Definitely not a 10. I'd want him in there for the energy he would bring to the midfield, but he's not a particularly creative player. I can't see us playing an out and out 10 away to Serbia anyway. Hourihane might play - but he's not a 10 as such either.

I don't see him as a number 10 either. He's obviously got terrific energy levels and running ability, and has played a number of different roles for Derby. What is his best position right now, and what position will he eventually settle down to?

I’d be inclined to play Knight as a wide attacking player, or as an advanced central player, whether that’s as a 10 or as an attacking midfielder.

I agree that despite his energy levels he doesn’t necessarily have the guile to be an elite attacking player. He’s a bit good at everything without being exceptional, so I’m curious to see what position/formation suits him best.

I’ve seen him play in a more conventional central role but I’m a little bit wary of putting a young player of his stature in a central position.

The old fashioned 10 playmaker we have is Hourihane, in a Norberto Alonso, George Hagi, Sigurdsson kind of mould, for that position to click in we must play 4-4-1-1 or 4-3-1-2 with players moving around so Hourihane could assert passes into spaces

Knight seems to be a right midfielder, Connor Ronan is a 10, Ryan Manning played there at youth level, he has some assets to be a 10, but the kid is making a living as a left wingback

Knight for me is a straight central midfielder. A number 8 I guess would be his position. Box to box, loads of energy, basically a Roy Keane type but unlikely to reach the same levels as Keane realistically. But potentially the best we have had in that position since Keane given time and a bit of luck with injuries. Maybe Mark Kinsella would be a better comparison to Knight.

Ive thought Kinsella was a good comparison for Molumby. Knight being so young its hard to know who to compare him to yet, probably a lot like Hendrick when he was younger. I'd hope he can develop better than Hendrick.

Yes I’d avoid the Keane comparisons personally. I’d be inclined to say he’s on the Hendrick track. Given the stick Hendrick gets here that would be seen as an insult by some but becoming an established premier league player is no small thing.

I'm more worried about the goalkeeping situation to be honest.

Kelleher not in the last Liverpool squad, presumably due to injury, and Randolph maybe struggling with a knock in the last game according to a couple of posters here. We could really do without that sort of headache going into a triple-header.

Honestly this is why I’d like Westwood back in the mix. But unfortunately he’s apparently broken his ribs so I suspect he won’t even be an option by late March.

Lawlor is in the Oldham team on loan from Doncaster there, 26 now with 100 league appearances.

So, we've currently Darren Randolph, Caoimhín Kelleher, and Keiren Westwood all injured.

Kieran O'Hara second choice at Burton Albion.
Mark Travers second choice at Bournemouth and denied his first team loan opportunity at Swindon, a bit questionably.
Sean McDermott at Kristiansund, who don't start their league until April, and he only played 6 games for them last season.
Max O'Leary second choice at Bristol City
Rob Elliot who hasn't kicked a ball for Watford

That leaves:

Gavin Bazunu - First choice at Rochdale in League One, who are leaking goals for fun. Bazunu only turned 19, and probably a bit raw and young to throw into action, although is one of the only goalkeepers actually playing regularly.
Ian Lawlor - Starting at Oldham in League Two, but struggling near the bottom of the table and the worst defensive record in the league.
Colin Doyle - Bit out of left field but playing on loan at Kilmarnock in the SPL

Beyond that, I don't think there's any standout goalkeepers in the League of Ireland worth an inclusion.

tetsujin1979
03/03/2021, 1:22 PM
There's Danny Rogers at Kilmarnock as well, was starting ahead of Doyle until recently. Doyle's started the last six games in a row, Rogers on the bench for the last three after starting all but three of Kilmarnock's games this season until a month ago

Jack Bonham is playing regularly at Gillingham as well, midtable in league one

Good, though I still wouldn't want to throw him in for a triple debut at such a crucial stage.

Also, Klopp is saying he'll try block international releases for players who would have to quarantine when they return - we're not on that at the moment and neither is Serbia, but there's still time...

I think that only works if its a 4-4-2 or 4-5-1 where you play old fashioned wingers. If we play something like a 4-3-3 like we have been doing the wingers are more like wide forwards and Doherty and Coleman don't work in that position

I think I’d go with:

Randolph (McDermott)
Kelleher (O’Leary)
Travers

Doherty
Coleman

Clark
Duffy
O’Shea
K Long

Stevens
Brady (Manning)

McCarthy (Arter/unknown*)
Cullen
Hendrick
Hourihane
Molumby
Knight
Browne

Connolly
Robinson
Horgan
O’Dowda (Curtis)

Long
Idah
Hogan

He went for a 25 man squad last time. So I followed suit...

*I’m not particularly convinced that any other central midfielder is ready yet so between Taylor, McEneff, Ronan, Mandriou, Kelly, Sykes, McGrath, Kinsella, Coventry, Doyle-Hayes, Murray, if Kenny is happy with any of them, fine by me.

Outside the squad, there’s far more interesting wingers than anything else, who could be useful coming off the bench: Harness, Duffy, Shodipo, even Trevor Clarke is being used off the bench at championship level...

Just one big loss - Egan. Randolph and/or Kelleher should be ok. Brady and McCarthy - when are they ever 100% fit? Of the rest, well, a more comfortable bench experience for others.

I think I'd include Bazunu and Parrott in the squad. Bazunu isn't ready but we've slim pickings for goalkeeper and he's the one getting his game ... Not picking Parrott on merit, frankly he looked poor at Millwall, but he does have a knack of wiggling out of tight spaces and linking play with smart touches - what's needed when we get into the final third. Too many workhorses in the squad with little guile which Parrott can potentially give.

I agree with your analysis - but Parrott's smart touches have mostly been against L1 opposition.

Apparently he made it clear he was calling it a day long before the conclusion of the last failed campaign. If Mick (now excelling at Championship level) had stayed on it would perhaps have turned out differently. Alas it did not, and given the ominous signs, rancour and succession of poor performances and results under Kenny (mitigating factors accepted) I find it unlikely he'd change his mind now.

But we can only hope...

We can, we probably won't, I wouldn't touch in with a bet or anything but SK is due a break, he's had nothing go his way. We could also be out of the game 30 minutes in, which is more likely than a victory IMO, but eleven against eleven etc. You never know.
