What happend on the eve/morning of the 1998 World Cup final?

Only the real impponderables for me...

What is the meaning of life?
Why does the queue I join in the post office always move the slowest?
Why does my toast always fall butter side-down when I drop it? etc., etc.

(That last one's a lie since I don't eat wheat and therefore bread, but you get the picture...)

Why do people onder what the meaning of life is instead of getting on with it?
What would I be like if I was born a girl & not a boy?

What would I be like if my parents didnt meet?

What would I be like if my parents didnt meet?

Do you really wonder that.

'What would I be like if my parents didnt meet?'

Thats a weird one alright - would that not mean you would never have existed and thus never knew about this world, and thus never would've had that question to ask :D

The two don't have to be mutually exclusive, Troy. You should know that. :)

Why is it at airport check in I always take 30 seconds to check in and everyone else in the queue ahead of me without fail takes 5 minutes at least no matter how small their luggage?

paul_oshea
15/06/2005, 10:23 PM
poor student, quality, was just thinking the same on me way home 2 weeks ago. i just cant understand it. and i knew they would so i took a look around to let everyone know when i first checked in and got out of the queue.

my father has a funny one though, you know when people are holding up traffic for about 2 or 3 miles etc on a road going about 40 mile an hour and wont move into the hard shoulder to let others pass them out, because they are ignorant and sh1te drivvers. well when he passess them out he swerves in right in to the hard shoulder, slows down for a bit and stays there right in front, it is very funny, but funnier that he even thinks they take notice....

Who discovered tobacco? And who thought of adding cannabis to it?

And what was your man doing when he first milked a cow?

And if we drive on the left because ye needed to keep your right hand free to attack others with your sword should you have meet a nasty character on the road, why do most countries drive on the right? (maybe this one is answerable?)

And why can't tractor companies give them a higher top speed?

Why does my toast always fall butter side-down when I drop it?

Toast typically flips once during the fall and therefore the buttered side will now be facing down. Simple logic really, PP. :)

What would I be like if I was born a girl & not a boy?

You wouldn't be a woman trapped in a mans body?? :D

What is infinity?
What's beyond outer space and within what is it all contained?
Sorry if any of you haven't previously thought of this and getting a bit freaked out now. :o

Why doesn't vegatarian pizza have vegetarians on it??

Why didn't Fred Flintstone jump through the window of the house like his sabre tooth tiger did at the end of every show??

What is infinity?
Infinity is an unbounded quantity. It is a value or state that we as people can not measure as measuring it bounds it and by definition its unbounded so by ascribing it a value would be paradoxical in a way.

It actually leads perfectly to your second question of:
What's beyond outer space and within what is it all contained?

That would be dealing with potentially trying to wrap infinity in a finite amount which will always lead to the question of what is beyond that. I assume whatever lies beyond if beyond is even the way to describe it is currently unfathomable to us and therefore this question is currently unanswerable and is just a spectulative question to which so many enjoy pondering and arguing about. I think by investigating the small we will understand the infinite. Quantum Physics is intriguing!!!

Peadar
16/06/2005, 9:58 AM
It actually leads perfectly to your second question...

Yeah, I intended for the questions to be linked.
Sometimes people think of infinity in numerical terms but never consider how it applies to us and our very existence.

I agree with that as I came to the same conclusion when I was thinking about death at around 11 or 12 years of age.
It freaks many people out and drives others totally crazy.

On a less profound note, whatever happened to Acid Rain?
It used to be the big scare of the late 80's early 90's.

Napoleon was left handed. So that's why Europe changed from riding their horses on the left hand side of the road, and then the Canadians, and then the Yanks just to be anti British. FACT.

My question is, why does smoking have to be bad for you?

Off them nearly 5 weeks now, but why can't they just be like drink - okay in moderation? Or even better like red wine, where a couple of smokes in the evening actually do you good? :( Proof there is no God...

Wasn't there some suggestion that it helped reduce the risk of Alzheimer's?

Gareth
16/06/2005, 10:27 AM
Yeah, I intended for the questions to be linked.
Sometimes people think of infinity in numerical terms but never consider how it applies to us and our very existence.

Numerical terms of infinity can cause confusion as you can always add one to a number to make it bigger and at what point in the number chain is infinity reached is the question usually asked, but it doesn't work that way. Take Positive Integers, this set is infinite as they are unbounded. Its not at any point it becomes infinite. It is infinite. In relation to our existance, I consider humans to be no more to the earth as ants would be to a forest. It could be considered incredibly arrogent of us to consider ourselves as anything more than a bi-product of a plantary system. The concept of God and religion somewhat smells of arrogence on our part that we alone in an eco-system of billions of creatures are the only bunch that get to continue after life. God in my opinion is the gap between our current knowledge and the unknown. It always has been considering the re-definition of God over the course of our history.

Gareth

Wasn't there some suggestion that it(smoking) helped reduce the risk of Alzheimer's?

Thats great. It helps reduce the risk of Alzheimers by killing you with lung or throat cancer before you get to an age Alzheimers kicks in. Justifying smoking is not really worth doing. If you smoke, you are damaging your body. If you wish to ignore this, that is all fine and funky. But suggesting its in someways good for you is a bit niave. I am sure getting caught in a nuclear fallout might stop some disease but its not really the point.......

I really hoped that this can of worms wouldn't get opened.
We're going to have a religious debate now and someone is going to get banned. :(
I don't have any religious beliefs, thank God. ;)

Gareth
16/06/2005, 10:50 AM
Didn't know debate on this subject was venturing into bannable material. I wasn't debating the nature of religions. I don't really mind what people get up to as long as they don't make me do it :). It's in Off Topic. I assumed this was some level of discussion on topics off football? If you mention infinity, god is unavoidable seeing as the concept is religions way of defining infinity and most of the world is of some religion.

Ok then, the Nicotine infilatrates every part of the body. Carbon Monoxide binds with Hemoglobin to effect oxegen flow round the body. Carcinogens can effect growth, cause abnormal reproduction and can lead to cancer. It can effect the immune system. The body produces antioxidants to help repair damaged cells. Smokers have lower levels of antioxidants in their blood than do nonsmokers.

And it smells so your out of pocket on laundry bills and your breathes tend to reek :)

You're not helping this ex-smoker.... I meant why does it have to be bad, rather than the thoery of what it does. Why can't it be as good as it is cool to smoke?

Because, when you get down to it, life is sh*te and if you can manage 5 minutes of happiness a week you are doing well...

"You're not helping this ex-smoker.... I meant why does it have to be bad, rather than the thoery of what it does. Why can't it be as good as it is cool to smoke?"

Its not really a theory more than a fact but thats not the question asked. Why can't it be good. It can be fantastic. The only price is the potential of a very uncomfortable end with the coughing and phelgm and stuff. But hey you might never smoke and end up that way. So you choose. Enjoy your vices and be damned the consequences or live all proper and hope that you live to 140 and die whilst playing a 5 a side game of astroturf soccer after scoring the winning goal :)

cant tell ye then, but im sure more of the enlightened ones here will divulge that info.

anyhow looks like you are right, but it says they dont bite, however the ones at home do as they bite and make you itch, trying to get blood:

http://www.uky.edu/Agriculture/Entomology/entfacts/struct/ef632.htm

more importantly it doesnt say what purpose they serve?? i mean if they just reproduce and die, and only live in pools where no fishies can feed on them what purpose at all at all do they serve?

blobbyblobbblobb its because of the dry weather you havent seen them around.

A midge is a tiny dipteran (two-winged) fly, a relative of the mosquito. There are thousands of midge species, however those of most interest to us are members of the Ceratopogonidae family - the "Biting Midges". This family belongs to the genus Culicoides, which consists of over 800 species in total. These biting midges are equipped with very specialised mouths that enable them to pierce skin.

Many people believe that all midges bite, this is a common misconception. Most species of midgies are actually harmless. These "friendly" midgies belong to the Chironomidae family, and have no piercing mouthparts. Unfortunately for us, there are plenty of biting midgies about, ready to cause mayhem! Lots of harmless midges, such as the "dancing midge", are mistaken for biting midgies and are often killed by wary people.

ok i feel enlightened i have learnt something that i always wondered but never thought of finding out. thank you macy g.

That would be to do with that fact children are the future of the race, and women can have babies. So the more women the more chance of a small group surviving. and its chivalerous...hehe : )
