Cork skipper Declan Daly has no intentions of hanging up his boots. Daly, who is 36 in May, insists there is still a lot left in the tank.

Anyhow he wouldn’t want to bring the curtain down on such a distinguished career on what has been a bitterly disapppointing season for the Leesiders.

“I’m nearly 36, but so what?” he told Sports.com. “My mind is as sharp as ever and, more importantly, the legs are still willing. I will know when it is the time to go, but it certainly isn’t now. I won’t overstay my welcome, that’s for sure.

“Some players don’t know when to call it a day, but I don’t want to get caught in that trap. I have enjoyed my football too much over the years to be remembered for the wrong reasons.”

Cork travel to Dublin to play UCD in the eircom League Premier Division at Belfield Park on Sunday having blown their chances of European football next season.

Their slim hopes of making it were ended by their 2-0 defeat against Shamrock Rovers at Turner’s Cross on Wednesday. No one was more disappointed than Daly.

“European football has almost become an annual event on Leeside, but we have missed the boat this time and I can’t begin to tell you how disappointing that is,” he said.

“But we have fallen short this season and you usually get what you deserve when all is said and done. We have nothing to play for as such, but we should keep on plugging away as if there was something at stake. We owe it to our fans at the very least.”

Cork boss Liam Murphy is delighted Daly is staying on. “Decky still has so much to offer,” he told Sports.com.

That looks bad alright! but you know what i mean. Anyway. Gunthers comments in the paper today? Doesn't look like the gowl(sp???) is going anywhere. The man is, quite simply, an idiot. We need players like Daly, like we all need holes in our heads. He is a bad influnce on the pitch. hoof, hoof hoof. If he satys on for another two years, and gets his game itll be a disgrace. So who'll bet against him playing??????

not me.

yea i know GWA good point.. looks to me like a scenarios that deccie is trying himself up with the mangers gig after gunther decides himself he's had enough

deccie obviously sees himself as next in line, gunther goes then patsy moves up to manager with deccie as assistant then patsy goes and deccie moves up to manager

thats prob whu johnny c has re-imerged as a player again for city, he prob realised he's below deccie in the "turns to manage cork city list" so he's gona play for another 5/6 years then it autmatically become johnny c's turn

dont laugh either kids
it may well happen

The thing is the likes of Deccie are holding this club back. When Deccie plays, it means O'Rourke, Napier, Lordan, even Kevin Murray are being frozen out. The four named there are better players by a mile but (with the exception of Napier) just lack the experience. But how do they get that practice when the 'old boys crew' are still getting their game.

ANYBODY BUT MURPHY.

Napier is miles ahead of Daly. You misunderstood me - I was saying "with the exception of Napier those four mentioned haven't as much experience as Daly.

I can't wait for the day when you go to the Cross and don't see Daly, Caulfield, Patsy, Murphy.

Time for Deccie to move on alright.

Saw the highlights of the Rovers game on Chorus last night and he was cleaned out for the second goal. Beaten for pace and everything else. The "penalty" decision was disgraceful though as was the game.

Both teams should hang their heads. God help us.

Deccie did make some crucial tackles though and if you watch the 2nd goal you`ll see Alan Carey making no effort to get back. Please give Deccie some credit.

Judging by some of the posts here, it's already a bit late for that. In fairness to Deccie, he's a very nice guy and has been a great servant to the club, but he should have gone at the end of last season, this season at latest.

Ok I will fight each one who will deny that Deccie has given his all for Cork City FC.
I'll start with Eanna, James and Neil because that's the big money fight. ****** is the most appropriate word for you lads.
I can't wait to box the head of Eanna!

Read the posts biy willa! Jeeze!
Deccie has been a great servant but his time is up. He is an old-style hoofer who can offer no more. Simple as that.

Hey Tinkerbell Deccie still has at least one more season in him.
You lot were up in arms when we off loaded Kelvin and Herrick saying that we needed them for their experience well we need Deccie to marshall the back four.

IMO He is a bad influence on the younger players. Someone pointed out that when Deccie was out 'injured' a month or two back, Derek was passing the ball around like Beckenbaur. Now that Napier is out again, it's back to hoofing it from Derek. A coincidence?

maybe saying Beckenbaur is going a bit too far, however, Peadar, can you honestly say that at this point in time that Deccie would be in your ideal starting XI? He hasnt performed that well at all in recent times. I wouldnt say get rid of him completely, but i wouldnt have him in my first team squad either.

I think that Deccie is the only natural leader in the team. You can argue that he is past it and that he hoofs the ball too much. But hes still not abad player, give him one more seson until someone like Damien O' Rourke is ready to step into the breach.

I may not start him but that doesn't mean that I don't want him in the squad. There is a difference.

Deccie was a great player, and went in hard. He earned his nick name and it will be hard to replace him, but his time is up and he has to go.

Can you all stop b!tch fightin' over him.

Derek is the hard man in the back four now. It was great seeing him square up up to O'Dowd last week.

You really just see what you want dont you? I said i wouldnt have him in my first team squad, I wouldnt be getting rid of altogether! Maybe if you read things you wouldnt be in so many arguments on this board. Anyway, from what ive heard about yesterday, they should all retire.

Deccie GAVE his all for city and he WAS an excellent defender and captain. I want to remember Deccie as the guy who stood in front of the Shed after the rovers game a few years back and said "same time.same place.next year" after a season of excellent performances. I don't want to remember him as a guy who kept going when he was past his best and kept young fellas on the bench. That's why he should retire NOW! He's still worth a coaching spot though.

As for your comments about boxing people, I remember being called "stupid" for saying something about Liam Murphy and mentioning violence in the same sentence. Practise what you preach.

so will i, deccie has given his all
BUT he isn't up to it anmore
he's too slow to react
too slow for pace

deccie is past his sell by date, and should retire and not have more fans remembering for the disaster he surely will be next year when he gets outpaced everytime he plays..

i'd much rather remember the great leadership, determination and love for playing for ccfc that he showed throughout his playing career, rather then the memory of an old man attemping to hang onto a vision of his past..

its time to move on declan, give someone else a shot at it

And i'll i too will remember as eanna pointed out his years of service to cork city and that season when we beat rovers on the last day of the season, but lost the league to pats, the shed was packed, stayed on for 30/40 mins after the gaem singing, and deccie came out to talk to us.

"Same time, same place, next year" he promised, and although we never repeated it next year, thats the memory of him i want to keep...

Deccie has undoubtedly been one of the alltime greatest city players. Hes been just about ok on the pitch this season although most of his influence has been as a leader on the pitch. He has still put in the last ditch saving tackles but has also been caught out badly for pace too often.

Saying all that its the Manager who picks the team & its not Deccie (like Hartigol) that hes been picked to play. Unfortunateky we all know Gunther will pick Deccie as long as he still standing.

Deccie may be about to be about to make the same mistake that Johnny C made of not retiring while still contributing. Johnny C should have retired last season as this year he has diminished a great career.

Personally I think Deccie should retire near the top this year as I can't see him enhancing the memories next season.
