Anyone got a scouting report on this guy?

Promising centre half. Tall. Wins his headers and his tackles, ones he has no right to win. Can also play a bit and does, as you’d expect from anyone who has come through Arsenal’s academy, but obviously we’re not talking Beckenbauer. Average pace for a young central defender. You’d worry if there’s more injuries or if he bulks up a bit as he enters his mid 20s, he could end up a bit slow running and/or sluggish on the turn given his height. Hasn’t really played much 23s football for Arsenal, mostly due to injuries over the past few years.

Nathan Collins and Lee O’Connor were the first choice for the initial 2018/19 U19 squad at centre back. But they were called up to the 21s by the time of the elite phase which gave the likes of Oisin McEntee and McGuinness a space in the squad. He came off the bench in the first two games and started the third alongside McEntee against the hosts, Russia. Scored, I think it was a header from a freekick or corner, and looked very good.

(Tom Gaston was great in that game as well, so composed and skilful at right back, but has never been seen in a green jersey since. Left Bordeaux to play in the USA which was a strange move. Also everyone talks about Afolabi and Connell and the waste their moves were, but Reghba, Bolger, Ledwidge and McEntee are also guys who haven’t really had any game time. They’re all 19/20 now, so the clock is very much ticking.)

Anyway, with Stoke not realising Nate Collins and with Lee O’Connor playing centre midfield due to Coventry (West Ham), Connell (Celtic), Bolger (Cardiff), Knight (Derby), Smallbone (Southampton), Parrott (Spurs, then playing no.10 for ireland), O’Reilly (Preston) all being withdrawn by their clubs, McGuiness and McEntee played all four games in the Euros. Both were impressive and solid albeit raw.

FWIW McGuinness grew up in England and also eligible for the north due to a Derry born father. Not sure where he was born.

You’d imagine the centre halves at the front of the queue for the next 21s campaign will be Collins, McGuinness, McEntee and Omobamidele.

I think these have been highlighted recently but said I'd post them here. It's not a stick to beat him with but more of an interesting insight into the life or perspective of a dual national.

His brother's twitter feed features a shamrock in his bio. And then tweets about the English football team: https://twitter.com/mcguinness21/status/1014277180589830144?s=19

And at the same time tweeting about our side: https://twitter.com/mcguinness21/status/917491987518963712?s=19

There's even a tweet stating his pride at his brother on his England debut: https://twitter.com/mcguinness21/status/679656103932751872?s=19

As I said, not a stick to beat him with. It's just an interesting insight.

I don't see any indication that Mark has played for England, only Ireland U19. Am I wrong, or is there another brother who plays for England?

Only two games in but it sounds like he has made an excellent start to his senior career. Doing it at a decent level for his age as well.

Should be straight into our Under 21 squad once the current crop become overage next year. Him and Collins could be a very strong partnership.

Joins Mick McCarthy on a 3 year contract at Cardiff.

Pity to see one of our better prospects at a big club leave for the Championship, but if it means he is getting regular football at the age of 20 then I guess it is a good thing. Fingers crossed the move works out.

I think it's a great move for him. He wasn't within a mile of the Arsenal team, he has a realistic chance to establish himself at Cardiff. From what I've seen of him at Under 21 level recently he's good enough to do it, but it might take a couple of seasons. Then hopefully he can kick on from there to the Premier League, either with Cardiff or through a transfer like Collins is doing.

Agreed.

Heck, if Kelleher got a similar move, we'd be quite happy.

Signs on loan for Sheffield Wednesday

Hopefully it's a good season for him. Sheffield Wednesday should be up there challenging for promotion. Had his iffy moments last season but Cardiff in general were poor. Can come back next season and show Morrison that he deserves to start or hopefully get a loan to another championship team.

Sheffield Wednesday won away at Accrington Stanley (0-1) today. Dom Howson, soccer writer for Yorkshire Live, rated Mark McGuinness 7/10. "Another impressive showing from the Cardiff City loanee. Was strong in the air and maintained his concentration levels throughout. Looked a cut above most of the players on the pitch".

Cardiff City veteran CB Sean Morrison is leaving the club; Sheffield Wednesday fans concerned that McGuinness might be recalled to South Wales (Sheffield Star, 5 Jan).

JR89
05/01/2023, 9:45 PM
Don't think it will make much difference. Morrison has been out injured since Feb 22 after doing his ACL and was actually only on a return to play contract after his contract had expired last summer. Seems like now he's fit Cardiff just didn't want to sign him back up as they've five lads that already play CB in the senior squad.

JR89
06/01/2023, 12:07 PM
So Cardiff are recalling McGuinness. Curtis Nelson whose been fourth choice CB is expected to be joining Derby and their RB is now out for a possible 4 to 6 weeks. They've been playing Perry Ng as a CB but could move him back to RB for a few weeks and need McGuinness back as cover.

The fact they're letting him play this weekends FA Cup game for Sheffield Wednesday isn't a good sign that they're willing to let him get cup tied before returning.

Eirambler

He's already cup tied I believe, from an earlier round, so they might as well give him the extra game at Wednesday. Hopefully for them he doesn't get injured in it.

Slim chance that Sheffield Wednesday could keep McGuinness on loan as Cardiffs transfer embargo could cause issues with him being recalled according to their manager.

He played a blinder

Didn't think it was his best game as he let Isak have a free header and lost him another time as well but then grew in to the game. Been the best player all season. Can play on the ground and is very good in the air. Still training with Wednesday so could stay yet. Promotion hopes rest on him unless they get a good replacement if he gpes.

Asked a Wednesday fan I know who’d see all their games (he’s not Irish) to give me his thoughts on McGuinness:

“Absolute unit. great in the air, good sense of positioning, fine with the ball at his feet, not really a marauding center back but will roam, might struggle with the fastest strikers but future prem player.”

Good to hear that it’s universally so positive about him. I remember being really impressed by him during the elite u19 stage of the 2000 class - but I’d kinda thought over the last year for the 21s that he’d stagnated a bit. That the mistakes were a bit too frequent and that the feet (or the reactions) weren’t quite quick enough in defending and his pace was a bit of an issue. Considering all that, i thought he wouldn’t quite reach international level.

But you’d be very reassured by the reporting of his loan spell

Wednesday have done the paperwork to keep McGuinness for the rest of the season and he is still training with them. Cardiff have paid £7m towards the transfer fee for the deceased Emiliano Sala and hope FIFA will lift the transfer embargo, but there is a separate EFL embargo. (Wales Online). So where McGuinness will be playing next month is still uncertain.

He's probably better off sticking out the season with Sheff Wed anyway. Chance of pushing for the League One title, versus struggling against Championship relegation.

Yeah it's weird because there was someone saying his loan might have been until the 3rd round of the FA cup going by comments from the Sheffield Wednesday manager.

Sheffield Wednesday submitting paperwork to keep him on loan could be them trying to extend the loan.

They gotta wait for FIFA to lift their transfer embargo. By right FIFA shouldn't because if they weren't in danger of relegation and desperate for new players they wouldn't have payed Nantes the first installment for Emiliano Sala after years of refusing.

Why did he go out on loan in the first place?

Seemed a regular with Cardiff last year, so to then drop a division for a loan move is a bit unusual

Eirambler
19/01/2023, 10:16 AM
Was prone to mistakes at Cardiff last season so they decided to send him out a year for experience - basically let him make the mistakes for some other team and see if he can cut them out of his game.

This season Cardiff have been fairly awful and McGuinness has been excellent so it makes sense from their point of view to call him back.

McGuinness is one that goes under the radar in Ireland because we have loads of young centre backs, but he was highly regarded in England from a young age and they were disappointed that he went with us back when he did. A combination of a big physical centre back and the footballing skills he was taught at Arsenal mean he's still a very promising talent, especially if he has now cut out the lapses in concentration that were in his game previously.
