If i'm talking to someone who knows the site i call it foot, if it's someone who does not know the site then its foot . ie

Don't see why really - google is google, not google.ie/com for example.

There's examples of both all over the place:

domain dropped - google, hotmail, yahoo, elevenaside, football365

domain kept - myhome.ie, u.tv, ryanair.com/aerlingus.com/etc, foot.ie ;) (in fact, the airlines seem to push for the domain being kept)

But the ones that you're saying keep it, are the one's trying to sell a service on the sites. They're the commercial sites, and you hear them being advertised rather than joe bloggs talking about them?

Good point. The upshot of the advertising is that people do tend to say ryanair.com, etc. though. For organisations people will commonly say the <insert org name here> website, as in the RTE website or the FAI website.

Would you call boards.ie boards? Or boardsie?

Anywho, foot just sounds silly. Footie i get i suppose but couldn't say it cos that's what i would tend to call the indoor/astro games after work... Foot.ie for me. I agree about the phootball.com being too long winded (even though really it's just one word :D )

They seem to have solved now but for a while airlingus.com (foreigners may not be familiar with the aer spelling) took you to a completely different travel company.

I realise there's loads of example out there where the TLD is dropped, however very few of them registered their domain names in order to spell a word. Cloud wasn't aiming for Boardsie like, he wanted Boards.ie. The entire point of my registering Foot.ie was that it spells "Footie", that's why I don't get it. However each to his own, call it athlete's foot for all I care. :)
