View Full Version : We can still win it can't we?

If we win our last four games: France; Swiss, Faroes & Cyprus.
We make 22 points, which means Swiss can only make 21, France 19 and
Israel 20. However it's the 'if' which is the problem word, 8 drawn matches
between the top 4 so far and no doubt a few more draws in the next 4.
Switzerland........... 6 3 3 0 12
Israel ...................7 2 5 0 11
Republic of Ireland ..6 2 4 0 10
France .................6 2 4 0 10
Cyprus................. 6 0 1 5 1
Faroe Islands........ 5 0 1 4 1

Lets get serious here TrickyColour, we can't put away Israel despite a 2 goal lead at home we ain't gonna put the Swiss away at home, we ain't gonna put the French away. We'll come third in this group. Negative I know, but what do you expect?

and we cant put Israel away away from home either. And france, even though we dominated in Paris. I didnt see the swiss away game but I heard that we just sat back once we scored. WE only have ourselves to blaem here lads. Negative tactics. Happened again today. What was wrong with bringing Elliot on today for Robbie
Just cause it's Ireland doesn't mean we have this infallable right to beat big teams at home.
I have a bad feeling about the France match. They're due a big win.
We drew with Israel.Thats a big blow. It's not looking bright.

I have a bad feeling about the France match.
...It's not looking bright.
It's the same thinking for me..
But let's take 3pts on wednesday, and then we'll think about france..
But you're right.. At this moment, if I think to the match against France, I'm really scared of a results like Ireland-France from the last rugby SixNations..
It's a strange comparison, but try to think about it: before that game, it was all about an our victory but then they won
I don't want to tell that I'm think about a lost against France, absolutely not.. but I'm not too sure that we can win at home against Henry&co, like I was days ago..

At this stage we should take it one game at a time. Next Wednesday is a must win and - judging by the other match today and by our own performance tonight - we should not assume that we only need to turn up to get the three points!
There are four teams chasing two places. Let's just focus on the Faroes and worry about France, Cyprus & Switzerland after that.

i have to say that there is a lot to be taken from the team's performance in the first and last 20 minutes of the match. add finnan, keane and possibly richie dunne and stephen kelly (with finnan on the left and josh in manchester) to that and who knows what we might achieve
so here's to germany (we better ****ing get there, i have tickets :D)
i can see israel mucking it up against the faroes and cyprus, i think we'll end second in this group behind france. and then knock out the european champions in the playoffs. oh yes indeed.

To be fair we were decent and very unlucky. But why tnhe **** was an injured striker replaced with a midfielder. Stephen f'in Elliot for gods sake. We'd the game won. Game was lost in the centre of the park.

No you didn't, although I do get a little worried when everything turns into a prayer-a-thon. We're not all as staunch as you, me boy, and whilst I applaud your devotion, it's occasionally a little misplaced. I'm sure God has His hands full with the idiocies of the human race, famines and wars without worrying about whether we make it to Germany next year or not. Keep the prayers for the things that really matter, eh? :)

See that's the great thing about God he looks ut for what matters to people no matter how big or small-I know there's way bigger things which I'm preying for of course but obviously this matters to a lot of people and I genuinely believe faith can help.
Sorry if I talked about prayer that much but most of my posts were simply about faith in our sqaud and belief we can make it to Germany......I did post a prayer yeah and I do mention my religion but that's because it affects every aspect of my life but when I'm saying "we believe" "we have faith" "we can make it to Germany"I'm talking about fatih and belief in our team!
Our believe God will help us yes but last night the majority of my posts were focussed on support and trust in the Ireland sqaud!

Agree with you Soper, France are due to come good. The thought of Henry sprinting at the ageing Kenny Cunningham scares the sh!t out of me.
Mathematically we can still top the group but realistically we havent got a prayer. At best we can hope for is a playoff spot and I think we'd all take the at this stage.

You're right. But it was Kerr's fault that we allowed freak luck or whatever to even be a factor. But I actually think we'll get there too. I'm actually less mad today than I was even a week after the draw in Israel.

This is great lads. Lets get all the irish fans to have a bad feeling about the Swiss and French matches. Just like Holland in 2001. people were like i dont know and we all know how ireland played. So the more bad feelings we get the more i believe we can still go to Germany.
And lets not forget.....Ireland should of scored 4 goals last night in the second half. We were like United in the FA cup final....unlucky.
So can Ireland still go to Germany????
Of course its in out hands.

I just put it on another thread too, but we can win the group still on 18, 19 or 20 points. It's that tight. Switzerland vs Israel and Switzerland vs France are still tough to call, as are all our remaining games!
It may surprise you but we can lose one of Faroes & Cyprus, or draw both and mathematically win the group!

Were in the same position now as FRANCE. Fair enough we have to get 3 points out in the faroes but its all to play for.

I think we're in a much better position than the French. They still have to travel to Dublin and Switzerland the 2 toughest teams at home.

That's right. Assuming that we take 6pts between FarOer and Cyprus (and we'll take them), if we beat France at home, that two matches (Switz-France and Switz-Isr) will decide the group before our last match at home against swiss

That's what I'm saying-just because we're not teo points ahead of France everyne has sacked Kerr and half the team and are hastily looking for a distant foreign relative so they don't have to renew their Irish passport! And when anyone tries to get the atmosphere up and keep the faith alive they are drunk, on drugs or just a nutter who p*sses everyone off.
This doesn't go for the whole forum of course but does for a few!
Lads......we're going to Germany!

The only advantage that Switzerland have over us is that they are still favourites to take 3 points from Israel at home in my view. But they still have to come here, play France and go to Cyprus who they struggled against at home. France have to go away twice but they have both minnows at home (good for goal difference).
I think it's more likely than not that we'll finish in the top 2.
Who'd settle for second place now? I'm torn but I think we should still be looking to win the flipping thing.

I'm just calling it as I see it. We've all been talking about how we owe the Swiss now for the last two years and we've had two chances to teach them a lesson and failed on both occasions. Also everyone has been talking about how unlucky we were on Saturday night, well sometimes you just have to make your own luck, regardless of all the chances we had in the second half we should never have let them back into it. I really really really hope I'm wrong but everything looks against us topping the group, I hate to keep hawking the point about us not having won a meaningful game with Kerr in charge but it really worries me that we can't get the victories we need. On the other hand-we are due a big win under Kerr and it has to come eventually :D . And what wouldn't it be boring if we were just sauntering through the qualifiers-we need the excitement and the tension!

Without a doubt we can still win it. We have it in our own hands the doom and gloom will lift....We played well...........Bad decisions made cost it...not the players..........
