Real Madrid have released Portuguese international winger Luis Figo, according to Spanish newspaper Marca. The 32-year-old fell out with coach Wanderley Luxemburgo near the end of the season after being used as a sub as Real finished second behind Barcelona.

"The way they treated me when I was dropped wasn't right. They didn't tell me I wasn't going to play. It really hurt my pride," Figo told Marca.

The former World Player of the Year had a year left to run on his Real deal.

He may be joining Spurs according to the Beeb, who knows? Legend of a player though, sad to see him treated this way.

A good player but never a "great" one IMO. Never justified the price Real payed for him anyway.

Falls down to easy and moans to the ref too too much, I never liked him, i always had the feeling he said something like the following to the ref

"I am figo and i was fouled, I am better than this player so i deserve a free kick"
This news is welcomed.

very unfair on him lads ye are.

at the time it was a good price for him cos in 2000 he was one of the top three players in the world.

he had a great 1999-2000 season with barca , they should have won the cl that season and a great euro 2000 with Portugal too .

You want Fenlon sacked already?! :D

As for Figo- good riddance. Very talented player and all, but an absolute thundering **** of an individual. He should have known that what he did to Barca would come back to (deservedly) bite him on the arse. And this from a Real fan :D

Wow, a lot of hate for Figo on here. How can anyone write him off so readily? I'm a Barca fan, but I still rate him as a class act on the pitch(all that diving aside!). I thought behind Casillas he was Madrids best player this season before Luxembergo came in and dropped him. I still feel he has a couple of good years at a top club ahead of him......Utd could do a lot worse.

I'd agree with ya there, he's only 32. 3/4 years of good football left in him. Personally i think he would be a good signing for United, Play him on the right hand side of midfield, would create buckets of chances for the strikers. I would still rate him as a class player

If he signed for Manure can you seriously see him putting in the graft thats needed in the premiership games aginst the likes of Wigan,Bolton,West Ham,West Brom etc, surely he'd go missing in action and only show up for the bigger games and the Champions league games, that could be costly in the long run, thats exactly why Ferguson got rid of Beckham.

What ? Beckham was one of united hardest working players. up and down the right flack all day as well as moving into the middle. Beckham was sold because of the fee involved and his differences with Ferguson, i.e - he thought he was bigger than the club.

Figo would not be used in every game, barely any player is now adays, would be brilliant for europeans games i think

You're havin a giraffe there Roo,do you think Fergie would splash out all that money in wages to have a "cameo role player" and do you think Figo would be happy sitting on the bench waiting for "the big games",I don't think so, but thats just my opinion.

Totally agree with you there Beckham was second only to Keane in terms of work rate an example to anyone and i think even Keane has said that a few times

yeah your right i think he has. thought i read some where before, that back a few years ago, circa 99, Keane would run on average 13 miles per game and beckham would do something very similar, could be wrong thou
