he's not shít though- he had a bad time of it in England and got slaughtered by the idiotic press in England. He's always been a quality player and now he's shown it. Man Utd could have done with him this season

Diego was always threatening to do something great.
He never got a long enough run in the United team to get his confidence up, the press got on his back because it tok him so long to score the first goal, but all in all, he worked incredibly hard, scored some great goals, and some very important goals for the club.
delighte dot see him do so well.
hard luck on Ian Harte though, two of Forlan's goals at the weekend relegated Levante.

Henry and Forlan win Golden Shoe
EUROPE'S TOP SCORERS
1= D Forlan (Villareal) 50pts
1= T Henry (Arsenal) 50pts
3= S Eto'o (Barcelona) 48pts
3= C Lucarelli (Livorno) 48pts
3= M Mintal (Nurnburg) 48pts
6 F Tekke (T'zonspor) 46.5pts
(2 points, 1.5 or 1 point awarded per goal depending on quality of domestic league)
Villarreal's Diego Forlan and Arsenal's Thierry Henry and will share the Golden Shoe award for being this season's top goalscorers in Europe.
Ex-Manchester United striker Forlan scored twice on Sunday for his Spanish team to join Henry on the 25-goal mark.
Henry becomes the first player to win the award two years in a row.
It is only the second time it has been shared. In 1989/90 Bulgarian Hristo Stoichkov and Mexican Hugo Sanchez were the joint winners.
Henry is the sixth player to win the award twice, joining such legends as Eusebio and Gerd Muller.
Forlan's double came as Villarreal beat Levante 4-1 to clinch a spot in the next season's Champions League.
"It's been an incredible season and we couldn't have finished it in better style," the Uruguayan said.
"I'm very happy to have ended up as top scorer as it is something that doesn't happen every day.
"Qualifying for the Champions League is a prize that we all deserve as we worked hard for it throughout season."

Absolutely delighted for them both. It's a real kick in the groin for those bar stoolers who'll tell ya Forlan was rubbish and that Henry is over-rated.
2 years in a row now awell for Henry and the first ever player to do that.
Congrats to the both of them.

the guy is a total looser. He couldn't hit a doney's arse with a frying pan for us..now look at him!
Must be piste easy in Spain! :mad:
Fair play to him he worked his socks off but at the end of the day the english game din't suit him.As for 90% of Southamericans in england.
The obvious comparison with Diego is Savo Milosevic. Admittedly Savo was loathed by the Villa fans whereas Diego was liked by United fans ( Its amazing what 2 goals against Liverpool will do :) )
Savo and Diego couldn't cut it in The Premiership but went onto to great things in Spain. Saw a lot of both players in England and thought they were both pretty poor. No explanation for it really although confidence is obviously a big factor. Towards the end of his time at United, Diego was pretty low on that

There was a very good article on the BBc website one time about why south americans dont make it. Hernan Cresp put it down to lifestyle. If you are unhappy off thep pitch you are unlikelyl to perform on the pitch. The weather and food etc etc really gets to the South American players and therefore they dont perform to the same extent that they may do in Spain or Italy. There are some exceptions but not that many. Gilberto Silva, Angel, Ardiles, Juninhio have all been a success in the English League.

Would agree you on a general basis but I think that Forlan is a different case. His work rate was phenomenal, a great attitude and did enjoy Manchester life. I think its more of a footballing thing with Diego

I dont think forlan ever got adecent run in the team if you look at his apps it was always agame here and there. in fairness van nistilroy was on fire.Its all about confidence and if he had been there this season he would have got plenty of games. :ball: :ball:

What about some of the fantastic players who performed exceptionally well in the killer style of English football and couldn't replicate their form in a less frantic league abroad. What does that say about Spanish Football, Italian or French Football for example???
Theirry Henry
Eric Cantona
Marc Overmars
Manu Petit
Nicolas Anelka
David Beckham
Ian Rush
to name just a few.........
It's more to do with the players style than the league style. Some world class players will excell in one league due to a number of reasons - the team they are with, the style of play the team uses, the managers tactics, the oppositions tactics etc etc
Most people could see that Diego Forlan was a decent footballer who never really had the luck in front of goal when at Utd. He's taking his chances now and is probably actually getting less chances to score at Villareal than he would at Utd but their going in for him at the moment and the team style of play suits him.
His strike rate at United would only have been slightly affected by the frantic pace of the game, it's all the other elements I've mentioned above that would probably also have had to work against him which they obvioulsy aren't now in Spain.

fair enough point karlos. but cantona did nothing outside england.he wasnt even a regular french international when he was doing great at manky united.
was ian rush actually a success in italy?
the english media are always happy to label non-english players as being rubbish simply because they fail in england.its a "world-football-revolves-around-england" attitde that pi$$es me off

Bar captain his country, call Hoolahoop a bag of shít, win the French Cup once and do the double with Marseille.... Would probably have done more if he didn't keep getting banned for calling the FFF wánkers at disciplinary meetings :D

Well the point I was trying to make is that a player mightn't do well in one league but much better in another for a number of reasons not just the style of play in the league.
I was trying to highlight that the Premier League is not the only case of that. Players are suited to different leagues, different systems, different styles all the time. It doesn't make them bad players when they have a poor run.
Agree with ya about the media saying inaccurate things about players but it's the people who'll believe what journalists say over what football people say, that are the biggest catylst of those opinions. :)

if forlan had been with a team outside the top 6 in england he would have been a success,too much pressure at utd,the club was too big and too much of a spot light on him,a non regulary scorer at utd is always targeted,look at ruud when he came back for the ac milan game,didnt score for the next 7 or 8 games

I know, that was my point, read my post again! :rolleyes:
You can be a fantastic player in one league because of the style of play, the team you have, the system etc.......
Someone said on the thread that the killer style of english football was ruining great players but how come great players like Rush, Henry, Anelka, Overmars etc etc played their best football in the english league while struggled in less frantic leagues. The reason is because of the points mentioned above. It's not a problem exclusive to players who come to english football, but also players who move to Italy, Spain, France etc etc. :)
