Any takers on who should get player of the tournament. I know theres gonna be people who say Shevchenko or Lampard or Crespo or even Maldini, but for me the most outstanding player of this tournament was the unfashionable Jamie Carragher. The reason I say unfashionable is because hes' no nonsense and just quietly gets on with what he's paid to do (defend).People say he's not a patch on John Terry or Rio Ferdinand or Nesta cause he can't score but hey if there was a better defender / player in this tournament. This guy died for the cause from the off and I think he above any player deserves that honour.Any takers..................

I'd agree with you re Carragher. Heart of a lion, only other contender would be Shevchenko for me.

Thats who I would give it to and he is top scorer both of them are facts. I think the point of this thread is people say who they would give it to and thats my contribution.

Mine would go to Jamie Carragher too, he was quite brilliant in the heart of Liverpools defense putting every limb on the line to get vital touches on the ball to knock them out for corners etc, rarely made mistakes and always did the right thing.

Honorable mentions go to Marc Van Bommel, John Terry, Gattuso and Shevchenko.

Rooney for the debut hattrick??
Ronaldinho for that goal against Chelsea??
Kaka for that pass in the final, and pretty much every other assist he got??

You're 'avin a giraffe

If we must select a lionhearted player, then let us choose one who matches that description but can also play football (yes, they still exist) - Park Ji Sung of PSV.

My Team of the Tournament

Cech (Chelsea)

Cafú (Milan), Terry (Chelsea), Alex (PSV), Zambrotta (Juventus)

Park (PSV), Essien (Lyon), Lampard (Chelsea)

Ronaldinho (Barcelona)

Shevchenko (Milan), Adriano (Inter)

SUBS:
Dida (Milan)
Carragher (Liverpool)
Maldini (Milan)
Van Bommel (PSV)
Martins (Inter)
Drogba (Chelsea)

For me Marc Van Bommel has probably been the most impressive player I've seen play. Great on the ball and has a knack of breaking up play with petty fouls that don't get punished. He's a clever player and will do well whereever he moves

I don't understand this signing at all. Milan are replete with quality DMs (Gattuso, Ambrosini, Pirlo - arguably more of a regista), and Vogel hardly represents a significant improvement over any of those players.

milan for all their greatness probably dont have a great squad if you know what i mean they have a lot of ordinary players on the bench ie dhorasoo , serginho , inzaghi , kaladze , tomasson plus they have a habit of making strange signings so it kinda fits.

Liverpool are like Irish supporters they like to play the poor mouth and pretend they are down trodden. I agree taht Carragher has been excellent this season and he has been recognised as such. Quality season from a great professinoal

My Team of the Tournament

...Lampard (Chelsea)

What is it with Lampard? He has certainly not been one of the players of this seasons champions league. Cocu deserves a place much more than Lampard. Lampard did feck all at Euro 2004 other than score a few goals and he gets into that team of the tournament.

Carragher had a very good season and is a good player. But the better defenders don't make the job look so hard. Too many last ditch tackles and just getting his toe to a ball etc for my liking. It makes for great viewing though....

Dida  I have to dissagree, I think the semi 2nd leg at PSV, and the final really showed that Dida is at best only an average keeper. Unless it down his throat he won't stop it.He is an ok shot stopper but hey so is David James, if there was a keeper that stood out then it was Cech......................

Dida is a donkey, just cause he's brazilian doesn't make him special or world class he's about as world class as his buddy Roque Junior :D

Is that not because he's covering for faults in other peoples' games? The man is sheer class and deserves evrything he gets in the game. Rafa said after a couple of weeks in his presence that he was on a par with a Ayala. Cafu said as much before the CL final and those two men between them have seen and done it all.

""He's scouse, he's sound, he'll smack you with a pound.......Carragher, Carragher!!

I would pick Carragher. I think a very good and honest player.
