Before the start of the season Liverpool knew what the rules were - Winning the champions league would not get them automatically back into next season..
They won the Champions League this season, but they were very very lucky several times during the comp, they just about scrapped throu the groups stages with a winner in the last few minutes, were 2nd best to a poor Juve side over the full 2 legs, Chelsea were robbed ! it was never a goal.
Bitter, bitter, bitter, bit........ :D :D
Rules? What rules? There was no rule in place for the winners of the Champions League, so as someone has just won the Champions League having not qualified through their domestic league, one will now have to be created. So we'll be there next year. The Premiership will automatically have 3 teams in the group phase, while Everton and Ushyted, will have to qualify.
Yeah, we were very lucky to win the Champions League weren't we? With a patched up side, we destroyed Olympiakos in front of the Kop with just one striker available, hammered Leverkusen with no Stevie G, bossed the Italian champions Juventus in the quarter-final, again without SG, grinded out a result without Alonso against the English champions in the semi, and came back from 3 goals down to win against last year's Italian champions. We deserved to win the CL this year, and anyone who disagrees with that is a liar!
If that's what we could do with a makeshift squad, what will we achieve when we have a squad of world-class players? :)

Jeez. Whoever started this thread is just plain daft. Just like FIFA messing with the format for the World Cup, making the holders qualify, UEFA has made the same cockup. A place should be reserved for the holders of the European Cup (CL, whatever), no matter where they finish in their domestic league. Every winner has the right to defend their title no matter what the sport may be in my opinion.
I don't like Liverpool, didn't enjoy how they played overall last season, but credit where credit is due....... They WON!!

Sensible post, but the point is that UEFA DID NOT reserve a place for the winners, and rules should not be changed whenever a big club wants them to be. Somebody has to lose out if Liverpool og in, oor at least someone has to play an extra round, and that simply isn't fair on a side that has done what it has supposed to do, ie win it's championship or finish high enough to qualify.

Well seeing as the CL has so many participants of various strengths, from so many nations, and some nations having several places, I am sure UEFA can find a place to squeeze in another participant in an early round.
I was waiting to see how long before you would bite........was'nt that long ;) so easy to rile up Rafa. Ya would swear you were from Liverpool and not Ireland.
Who ever said i was a Manc ? I'm born and bread in Bray mate, never claimed to be from another country. I support and Bray, i like Man U.
Honestly Rafa, Do you think Liverpool are a better team than United ? and that there players are better, how many pool players would get there game at United ? Honestly.........
Sure not to worry, I can enjoy watching united in the champs league next season, remember to tell us all what the uefa cup is like, hav'nt played in that for donkeys years !
FACT - Liverpool - WORST european champions EVER
I never said anything about who would and wouldn't get into Man Utd's team anyway whats that go to do with it??????
Never said you were a Manc just said you followed them anyway correct me if i am wrong but in 99 did you not have a Man U flag flying from your window when they won the premiership?????? Don't remember you having a Bray one out when they won the FAI cup a few weeks after that????
FACT What you think of Liverpool this season won't change the fact they have won it
5 TIMES 5 TIMES 5 TIMES 5 TIMES 5 TIMES 5 TIMES 5 TIMES 5 TIMES 5 TIMES 5 TIMES
Also never said i was from Liverpool just said i follow them what country i am from has nothing to do with it as you proved in May 99 see Roo69 i have my sources!!!!!!!!!
UEFA Cup next season so be it it still won't take away we won it for the FIFTH time last wednesday!!!!!
Yeah its been a fair while since you played in it must be back to the barren twenty six years since you were in it actually when you were in it how many times did you win it???????

Kleberson and miller are in the utd reserves while my choices of kewell smicer finnan and gerrard are all on the first team all played in the final .
kewell v giggs !! both left wingers
smicer v rooney both attacking midfeilders
finnan v ronaldo both right sided players ( finnan plays on the right wing too i just dont know who plays on liverpools right recently ) gerrard v keane ....both central midfeilders and captians so all pretty similar

the only mistake i made in the list was finnan who used to play on the right wing with ronaldo who plays on the right wing ....
Used to play on the right wing?, when ? when he was 10 ?
Finnans only game on the right wing last season was away to Israel.
Fair play to Liverpool - a win in their finest european traditions...
The problem is still with the FA, who laid it down in the PL rules at the start of the season. UEFA have a rule no automatic right to defend, because a maximum of 4 teams from one country. If the FA had left it open as the spanish federation did this wouldn't even be an issue.
I suppose you can't blame the FA for thinking a team so shít to finish outside the top 4 could win the Champions League, but ultimately it's at their door. I can't believe so many have brought the FA spin....

Liverpool of course have waved Goodbye to Michael Owen, and when Cisse was replaced by Pongolle, the bite went from the Reds attack. By that time, Spurs were in the ascendancy anyway. Liverpool's other debut boy - Josemi - played at right back, whilst Steve Finnan took up a right wing slot. Carragher played next to Hyppia, and the back-in-favour Riise made up the back four.

Josemi's suspension meant a recall of Steve Finnan in his natural position at right back. Apparently, Benitez had now begun to realise what everyone else has known for ages – Salif Diao is not good enough, no matter how much he pleads with the fans and manager to be given time.
Steve Finnan was signed by former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier for £3.5million in the summer of 2003. Although he's a right-sided defender he's also quite comfortable on the wing. Attacking down the right-hand side is a big part of his game.

In 1974/1975 the mighty Bayern München won the European Cup. That same season they finished 10th in the Bundesliga. Maybe they should have been forbidden from playing in Europe the following season and adding their 3rd pot on the trot?

The rules have changed since then  . We could spend all day dragging up events from the past, this is now. Liverpool have not met the criteria needed, so they shouldn't get in IMO.

ffs, and that makes a difference how? Different rules, and how many times the problem isn't the winners defending, it's the numbers from a particular country. It's the FA that have bottled the decision and shifted the blame (very effectively it seems) to UEFA.

Not met the criteria. As I said all title holders, no matter the sport, should have an automatic right to defend their title. This is just one mess crated by the English FA and UEFA. To sort this out they should let Everton still in as they met the criteria and enter Liverpool in the preliminary rounds. At least then all are satisfied, plus a smaller club gets an unexpected windfall playing against Liverpool.
I am not a Liverpool fan, but the club deserves to be in.

Biscan had a much better season than Saha, who has done little at utd.
1 decent season at fulham is all he has had(and lets not forget about his failed spell @ newcastle)... biscan has a champions league medal. anyway my point was they were not like with like.
Kewell and smicer have not played for most of the season while giggs and rooney have. Garcia plays on liverpools right but the way, not finnan... so maybe stojkovic has a point:)

I believe the Charlton quote, impressive and all as it is, tells you that he did in fact play at right back that day. Keep trying though.

Early rounds for the CL holders, Liverpool?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/l/liverpool/4613695.stm
Uefa president Lennart Johansson will contact everyone on his Executive Committee on Tuesday to arrange a vote on Liverpool's Champions League bid.
Liverpool finished fifth in the Premiership and have not qualified for the competition but Johansson says they should defend their title next season.
Johansson also believes they should come in at the first qualifying stage.

5 EPL teams in the CL?

not read through the whole thread so may be this has been covered, however was chatting to a mate last night who put forward this.
If Bayern Munich had won the CL this year and finished 4th in the league they would have been able to defend it next year.
Germany only have 3 teams in the CL and Uefa have imposed a maximum of 4 teams per country therfore BM would have been allowed to defend it.
Meanwhile England would still have their 4 teams in it. Therefore an extra team has been admitted.
Doesn't this mean its a big deal over nothing. Both Liverpool and Everton can get in the CL????
Why all the who har???

you have answered it yourself , germany have 3 clubs entered england have 4 , you can have a max of 4 .
its not creating an extra place that is the problem its the having 5 places for english clubs that is the problem when you are only alloud 4 .
plus allowing them in will reduce the amount of money for the 4 clubs that bothered to compete properly in the league should get .
