I remember when a kid going to the Markets Field, the key games there for rivalry and sometimes the odd 'scuffle' or two between the balla boys and visitors were against Sligo Rovers, Waterford and Shamrock Rovers.....all good fun. :p

Boys from Ballynanty....'Balla' was the tough guy area while Moyross was cutting its teeth back in the late 70's early 80's....you didn't want to mess with the 'balla boys' ;) :D

I was at that game and the "reporter" was George Byrne. I remember reading the article at the time and it is still a real source of annoyance and if I ever meet that Byrne lad I'll tell him. He was one of those smart-alec college journo types that the Hot Press spawned a few years back. Most of them now 'write' for the Sunday Independent - shows you how bad Byrne is if he can't even get a job there.
The story was a pack of lies. If anything the Rovers fans were really looking for trouble that day - e.g. when John Power went to take a kick-out they flicked theri scarves at him (the fans get very close to the players at Rathbane. There was no 'cavalry charge' - it was around the time Stab City was coined and Byrne thought he was being funny. He's a t it. :ball:
