Can't find a thread for the U21 midfielder, even though he's made his debut for Bournemouth.
Just signed a new long term contact at Dean Court: https://www.afcb.co.uk/news/first-team/gavin-kilkenny-signs-new-long-term-contract/

Made his long-awaited league debut today, coming on for some garbage minutes in a 4-0 win over Barnsley: https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/55096957#tab-Line-ups

Yeah I watched the second half hoping he’d come on, torrential downpour throughout. They’ve a lad Riquelme on loan from athletico, he came on today, and had scored recently. Looks really good in attacking midfielder role. Putting Kilkenny even further down the pecking order. Really deflating to see Kilkenny come on in injury time when they’re 4-0 up and could make 5 substitutions. Doubt if Kilkenny will see much action unless a spate of injuries. A Jan move loan required if nothing much happens between now and Jan. Ditto for travers, he can’t settle for just cup action again, can he?

If the club are paying you decent wages and no one else is prepared to meet them or better them then what do you do ? And perhaps the Club does not want them going out on loan for whatever reason. I imagine if a club wants you going out on loan then it certainly could happen.

Kilkenny was so good in preseason last year that I was hoping he'd break into the team when they were in Premiership. The fact that he still cant get in while in Championship is very disappointing.

He's one of many Irish players that badly needs a loan move in January.

5-0 win today for Bournemouth, 5 substitutions made; Travers or Kilkenny not one of them. Great to see Bournemouth do so well but disappointing to see no game time for our guys; hopefully these guys will start see some game time (anywhere) in the new year

Sounds like Kilkenny had a good first half there and was involved in the Bournemouth goal. Seems like the kind of player that would suit the way Bournemouth play, surprised he hasn't featured more for them. Should be a good number 10 option for the under 21s in the next campaign, probably competing with Smallbone for the spot.

Are we beginning to specialise in young Number 10s ?

I guess Conor Noss and Brandon Kavanagh are the two other lads you’d look at

Decided to watch Kilkenny today playing for Bournemouth, surprised to see him start as a defensive midfielder, as I saw him play attacking right mid for under 21s sometime ago, played very well, good turn of pace, could be a surprise inclusion in one of the next few squads.

I didn’t watch Kilkenny today. But judging by several posters on their main fans forum, he played ok after a shaky first half. And is clearly in dire need of a loan, as he will be highly unlikely to break into current side. The “played very well” is likely through green tinted glasses. I’ve seen him play a few times, and wouldn’t be getting carried away just yet especially as he’s never really played senior football. Hopefully he will get a loan over the coming weeks.

Just watched the highlights and he was involved in the build-up for two of the goals - two neat forward passes that initiated the moves

Great to see a promising start to the season for Kilkenny, especially with us baying for creativity in midfield. Could learn a lot under Parker and be an early nice surprise. Initial comments against top opposition is very encouraging:

He played very well and it was great to see him finally get a chance. He is quite small though and you'd really want a physical enforcer alongside him if playing him in a deeper position longer term. Definitely one to keep an eye on though.

Enjoying some of the posts about Kilkenny here too: https://bournemouth-forum.vitalfootball.co.uk/threads/players-to-come-in-for-next-season.13991/page-33

I have a tendency to pay more attention to the positive posts about our players on these fan forums. But it does seem that he had a good game against a team which has just come down from the PL and have installed a bright young coach in Ismael with a physical and pressing style. So, overall, the noise is positive.

It is also positive that he is under the tutelage of Scott Parker. Parker was a pivotal midfield player in a lot of Premiership sides and played many different midfield roles, probably specializing as an all rounder.

Kilkenny and Travers starting again tonight, they're away to Birmingham. A big night for Travers with new signing Orjan Nyland on the bench.

I'd imagine he'll get back in at some stage during the season. However, I wouldn't be surprised if he's sent to the gym for a while either, his lack of physicality doesn't really suit the Championship and it would make me a bit reluctant about seeing him thrown in to our midfield also.

I'm not sure what I'm missing here but what doesn't sound promising from Parker?

"Gavin Kilkenny didn't make the squad today, which is very tough and very harsh on Gav along with other players that have not been around it."

Despite the Irishman's omission, Parker believes he, along with the other players who find themselves back on the periphery, will prove to play an integral part this season.

"These are the decisions what you have to make as a manager and they're not easy sometimes. But in saying that, I also realise the league we're in is 46 games and we're going to be sitting here in a month or in a couple of weeks time, and it will be the reverse of that and we will probably be stretched again because the demands of this division prove that.

While I agree Ole that it’s by no means curtains for Kilkenny from Parker, it bothers me that he can be dropped completely from the match day squad after doing well as a starter in his early season appearances. Clearly SP still saw midfield as a weakness so it’s not a great sign.

Feel bad for him, disappointed for him. Was hoping that he’d become “unignorable” to Kenny.

Yes, fair point. I took a look at the side there and they had Lerma and Pearson starting as the 2 in the 4-2-3-1. And looking at the bench, it doesn't appear as though they had anyone to come in for Lerma or Pearson directly really. However, Lewis Cook plays there and is out injured.

Hopefully he does get games with the rotation that will be necessary.

On the other hand, great to see Travers play and keep a clean sheet! Nyland started the last game against Hull and kept a clean sheet on the back of conceding 6 in the EFL Cup. Good to see Travers back in.

He did ok. Sharp passer, still needs someone strong like Lerma playing alongside of him. Pearson has just replaced him on 82 minutes. Travers solid, 1-0 up with 7 minutes left

Most of what I saw yesterday he was the deepest lying of his midfield, but with the occasional trip forward. Nothing flash, takes the ball, gives the ball. But that's all I've seen of him this season.

With the midfield injury crisis at the start of the season, Parker reinvented Gavin as a deep lying playmaker. He’s done well. Agree on similar to Cullen comment, however, Gavin does have an eye for a defense splitting pass, something Cullen lacks from what I’ve seen.

I wish lads like this would beef up in the gym. You can't be too slight to make it u have to be stocky
Remember Willo Flood every time I saw him play, i wanted to fly to Scotland with some weights and pasta for him

Subbed at half time for Pearson, he was on a yellow (yet again) for a cynical foul after losing possession. Not his best showing apparently. Could be out in the cold again after 4 straight starts. Very competitive in that midfield, and Lewis Cook is back from injury on the bench.

Started in a 1-0 loss against Boro in central midfield. Was the deepest lying player and looked confident/capable. Always looked to maintain possession with safe passes, showed for the ball well, and covered a decent amount of ground when coming back defensively. I’d like to see him take a few more risks offensively, whether by trying a bit more incisive passing when appropriate, or making runs into the box.

Perhaps he was instructed to be a true holder and let others be more creative/aggressive offensively. Anyway nice to see him start, hopefully more upside still.

Starts today, along with Brady and Travers.

It's a shame the Blackpool loan didn't go through. A loan move to the Championship next season seems likely. We certainly need more midfield options, especially at 6.

Seemed more than keen to get a loan in his interview with Newstalk. Candidly stated that his preference is Premiership with Bournemouth but they signed a lot of players in January which impacted his game time and he expected more this summer which would restrict him further so admitted a loan would be the best thing for now.

Spoke well in that interview. His granny was a Dublin camogie player, GAA hall of famer apparently.

Talk amongst Boro fans is he'll be brought in to as back up to Johnny Howson or possible replacement if Howson doesn't sign a new contract.

He might aswell just stay at Bournemouth in that case, training and being part of a premiership set up is far more beneficial. If he’s going on loan in the championship he needs to actually be playing…

No start yet in championship. Game time is critical for him and stoke already out of league cup. If no breakthrough looking likely before sept 1, alternative options need to assessed.
