They play 3 midfielders. He will get games. We are not half way through the season and he is not behind prime Roy Keane in their pecking order.

Got on for 18 minutes tonight. Let’s see if he can break through to start consistently

Looking through their forum Clucas was terrible, Kilkenny did ok. Hopefully he will get a chance with a start in the next game. Smallbone also seems to have had a v poo game tonight too

Stoke just seem like a very poorly managed team. I'm not sure it's the best place for the two Irish lads to develop this season unfortunately - they're likely to be regularly rotated in and out by a manager who doesn't seem to know what he's doing, instead just trying to strike it lucky with a different starting team each game.

They've a huge squad, and supposed to be signing Liam Delap on loan as well

<EDIT>

Season long loan for Delap confirmed

Disappointing that he's not at a club where he's an automatic pick. Looked very good for Bournemouth when given opportunities last season.

Two ways of looking at that. He might not work as hard if he was an automatic pick. He has a challenge on his hands to get in ahead of an experienced pro like Sam Clucas. Same thing Molumby achieved last year but moreso this year at West Brom.

Michael O'Neill sacked as Stoke manager. Will be interesting to see what effect that has on Gavin's playing time.

The smart play from him is to size up his options before sept 1 and try to find a manager/team who want him with guaranteed start time. Or at least push for reassurances at Stoke. For me, he’s a player that may take a while for a manager to trust in the sitting role and may not get that time with a new manager who’s under pressure for instant results. Also, being a loan player not brought in by the new manager will be against him

Highly doubt Bournemouth are gonna recall him this early in a loan. January maybe if they feel he's not getting enough minutes but not now.

Needs to be proactive and not passive. So many of our young promising players have dwindled due to passiveness in crucial stages of development. Partly down to poor guidance too. While some may simply not have been good enough, the career decisions and passiveness certainly didn’t help.

For me, Gavin is not every managers cup of tea, especially in the early stages of managing a new team in the championship… it’s a long way to January. Let’s see who they bring in and hope for the best for Gavin

JR89
25/08/2022, 3:38 PM
Alright let's say they could and do to loan him out again. What happens then if he's only getting ten minutes here and there?

tommy_c12000
25/08/2022, 3:52 PM
He will be with a manager who has actively recruited him which will maximize his chances of getting game time. It’s not rocket science. It’s more of a risk to stay with the unknown.

JR89
25/08/2022, 4:24 PM
Still never answered the question what happens it he's still only getting some minutes here and there off the bench with a new team? And what manager is gonna have him scouted to actively want to recruit him to play first team football in the next week.

He started last weekend. Hes at the stage now where its up to him to sink or swim. He needs to prove hes one of the best players at Stoke and keep his place in the team no matter who is manager and not be looking around for an easier option just because there is a new manager.

The manager who just got sacked actively recruited him & didn't play him.
Bournemouth too have kept him around & not played him plenty.

This blaming his environment / his manager / club style of play / etc is all well and good but maybe he just needs to be better consistently to be trusted, wherever that is.

It will be interesting to see if/how this impacts Will Smallbone too. He's been a mainstay in Nimon's team and they have collectively, obviously, performed below par. It could be a changer for both Smallbone and Kilkenny.

Stoke given permission to speak with Alex Neil. Has had a good six months since taking over Sunderland.

No sign of Kilkenny or Smallbone off the bench today, Alex Neil seems to be their new man in charge. Uncertain times ahead for the pair

Caretaker manager today as Neil not officially announced yet. They'll have plenty of time to impress the new man in the next few weeks.

They will, although I prefer maximizing chances and finding a manager who actively recruits you especially if it’s a loan deal. I guess such proactivity is lacking with some many of our young players/agents. Bazunu is an exemplary example of taking the bull by the horns and taking control of his career/development, Kelleher the polar opposite

What’s this guys next move? I know he had a thigh injury I believe, not much info about it. But he clearly has not had any luck getting game time at stoke. I’d love to see him go continental for the rest of the season. Only a limited amount of managers would “trust” him as a deep lying midfielder at the current time Id imagine, an acquired taste. The change in stoke manager was unfortunate for him

3-0 up in a cup tie, and Gav still can’t get on with 15 minutes to go. He needs to sort this out quickly this month

Blackburn who are third in the league are in talks with Bournemouth about taking Kilkenny on loan for the second half of the season.

The Bournemouth Loan Manager and recruitment team are monitoring Kilkenny's lack of playing time at Stoke (unused sub 7 times since returning from injury, only 3 appearances in all during the loan). "....We'll just monitor the situation and decide what's best for Gavin and best for Bournemouth (https://www.bournemouthecho.co.uk/news/districts/bournemouth/).” (Gary O'Neill).

No sub appearance today despite comfortable 3-1 cup win vs Stevenage. Bizarre that he’s still at Stoke. Another young Irish player letting his career slip by by showing lack of initiative or having poor guidance

Eirambler
29/01/2023, 3:26 PM
To be fair to Kilkenny, he's clearly very aware of the predicament he's in and that, turning 23 shortly, he needs to be getting games to avoid being forgotten about, as he put it himself. But there's probably only so much he can do all the same.

tommy_c12000
29/01/2023, 3:42 PM
I wouldn’t entirely agree, players can take careers by the scruff of the neck if they have the initiative, Kilkenny could have demanded a recall by Bournemouth at the start of a window and push for alternative options.

Even if Stoke have provided him reassurances they have done nothing for him to believe them. Less passiveness and more proactivity

Great, he must be an avid reader of foot.ie. He is much better suited for continental move though rather than league one

Kilkenny (23) on contract at Bournemouth until 2025 but apparently not in consideration for their First Team squad. Attracting the interest of Birmingham City and Reading, according to Football Insider.

On the bench again tonight, away to West Ham. Stats so far this season for Bournemouth's first 21 games (courtesy of Transfermarkt)
Squad: 6, Starting eleven: 0, Substituted in: 0, On the bench: 6, Suspended: 0, Injured: 0

33 minutes in the FA Cup, 0 in the EFL Cup. Makes Kelleher's stats look good!

Confirmed now. A player with Kilkenny's lack of size and physicality needs to be fairly amazing on the ball to make it at a high level. Kilkenny is technically solid, but not outstanding in that aspect of his play, so without the physical strength to go with it League 1 or League 2 is probably as good as it will get for him.
